I'm trying to track down a human skull for sale, but the best I've found so far has been $1500 and they'll only sell to a doctor.

Sadly, I'm not a doctor, I'm just trying to help a friend make a sculpture and the skull is a key ingredient.

So, anyone know a good legal source of skulls for sale? It needs to be adult and intact/have its teeth. Hopefully it won't be from a Chinese prisoner or the like.

If it's for a sculpture then why does it need to be real?

A plastic skull just doesn't have the same emotional weight. My friend might describe it differently but that's how I'd sum it up.

Offhand, I'd say you would need to get one through association with an academic institution. The bodywords people have a lot of experience dealing with human remains and art, you might get in touch with them for advice.

https://bodyworlds.com/contact/

I don't think there is any way you can get one without a lot of paperwork and money.

I would contact a school, OP.

One of my degrees is in anthropology and we used a massive amount of real people bones. And they do get to a point where the school just gets rid of them (because of wear).

I would imagine medical schools would also have some to get rid of.

If it doesn't need to be research quality it seems to be easier to get. This site had them, they're just out now:

Eh, Back around 2000 or so you could get a skull for around $500 and a articulated skeleton for around $2000.

Archaeologist/forensic anthropologist chiming in. Serious academic research (open access, no paywall) has gone into answering your question, and the answer is: people interested in human remains online occupy a very, very moral grey area. Tread lightly.

the OP's question was not about the morality of the online skull trade he just wants to know where to buy one. and according to this article the actual answer is: instagram

If you live around NYC, The Evolution Store on 120 Spring St has real human skulls for purchase. I know this because I've bought two from them!

Don't bother with their website, they only sell replicas online. Maybe it's a legal thing, idk, but they definitely sell the real deal in their stores.

Be careful with that - NY has a state law about selling or buying human bones across their state lines. That's according this this faq, a friend of mine bought some art from here awhile back.
