has anything really replaced pokemon? I recall seeing "yo kai watch" games that seemed like it might be the modern equivalent but in terms of general merchandising it feels like kids today are just playing the newer pokemon games.

I haven't watched pokemon since it was gen 1, did they ever give Pikachu a gender since it became a thing in the game? They always called Pikachu and all other pokemon 'it', though it kind of leaned towards Pikachu being a girl. Also, I think Ash could literally understand Pikachu's babbling anyways, and it was a thing with some trainers. So it seemed kind of pointless to make it (her?) talk.
