Something I see Arumba do a lot, and in the 15 hours I've played this I haven't tried to replicate so I can't say where this happens, is set provinces as special interest which tells his vassals to make claims.

I'm currently trying to unravel the mystery of merchant placement and light ships so haven't had time to rummage through the rest of the interface.

I think the format is the same for eu4. Crack open the archive, change the ironman lines in both files inside with notepad++, zip it back up with the right options, should have a non ironman save to check it with.

My two suggestions remain as always:

Portugal for a chill learning experience, just ally Castile and be held in Spain's warm embrace for the entire playthrough and just focus on learning colonizing and trade and small wars

Ottomans for learning how to curbstomp your neighbors

Anyone have any suggestions to improve EU4 startup time? It takes literally 5 minutes to launch to the main menu every single time (like first startup, having the audacity to click a back button in the single player menu, crashes, quitting a game and returning to the menu, etc).

Game is snappy once it's running, games themselves load fast, but there's this 5 minute lag every time the main menu is involved.

Every drive in my system is an SSD, 32gb ram, i7-6700, nvidia 1070. Nothing top of the line anymore, but I've seen people with vastly more terrible setups startup almost instantly.

Any ideas what might be taking it so long?

Yeah there’s no way that should be happening. Have you tried reinstalling?

One thing that sometimes causes a problem is if you have loads of old saves, try trashing those.

Don't have many saves (like 6) since I'm pretty new to EU4. Reinstalling didn't accomplish much sadly. Dumped the whole thing into a ramdisk and it dropped from 186 seconds load time to 103, so that's something.

Too bad Ruyuku isn't a daimyo in 1444, though. The strategy I've seen is to get a toehold on Japan via no-CB war, then eat the 10 corruption to reform the government to daimyo.

If you're more willing to restart a few times than eat the stab hit, trying to guess which daimyo is going to get attacked by ashikaga first and getting relations up so you can enforce peace to get into the war works too. Then you just wait for Ashikaga to get real mad about the territory you took and attack you so you can make Ming do all the heavy lifting.

EDIT: Okay, I compared my save with the original start and I think I built a few ships

Also mothball (or sell) your starting heavies, that'll save you a bunch of money, and be sure to send any light ships you might have to protect trade (it's possible sending them out to privateer would make you more money but protect is the safe lazy option to start out with)

If you grab an alliance with Castille it's also pretty safe to mothball your non-african forts (never have an unmaintained fort on the Morocco border) and turn down army maintenance to save more cash

Thanks! The cavalry is a much lower percentage than I expected.

So at tech level 16, the most effective stack is 32/4/30? That's obviously more than any province's supply limit at that point in the game. Should I keep two 16/2/15 stacks in adjacent provinces and then feed them into the same battle?

Yeah, split em up as needed, really only need the whole army to fight other similar armies.

e: Cav isn't all that useful, cost way to much for what you get out of em, you could probably skip them and not miss out on much
