I haven't bothered to read the entire thread so apologies if I'm just repeating someone elses point:

Lootboxes are literal Skinner Boxes. It doesn't matter whether they require an investment of time or real-life money to acquire, they still normalize a behaviour that is - at its very core - toxic to our feeble lizard brains.

What I'm saying is that lootboxes in video games, unlike violence or sexual content, do serve as a gateway towards real-life gambling.

As such, they should be - at the very least - regulated on the same level as online gambling. Probably more so considering they are oftentimes targeted towards children.

I think the main obstacle against getting proper regulations in place at this point is the sheer size of the industry, and just how large a portion of that cake is made up of lootboxes.

Companies like EA could -rightfully so- object that any regulatory measures would cut heavily into their profits, and you know how reluctant any Republican would be to make an argument against that.

The difference being that brick-and-casinos aren't the largest entertainment industry in the world. And there's still stuff like online casinos that are able to circumvent local gambling laws by having their offices listed in tax havens.

Don't get me wrong, I want this poo poo banned, and not just for kids. It's predatory and abusers out weakest instincts. I'm just saying it'll be extremely difficult.

The fact that the only games that use 'free' lootboxes just happen to be the ones that rely on post-distribution revenue should tell you exactly why 'free' lootboxes exist.

They're the video game equivalent of a drug dealer handing out free samples.

This still doesn't show the chance for getting individual items, although it probably could be calculated.

Still, seems odd - petty even - that they'd resort to such an obvious half measure.
