Yeah I did the thermal replacement. The job Sony did on those was awful.

However I am still worried it will die someday. I have read the best fix is to remove the PSU and leave it external but I have never found a good guide for it. The PSU gets so hot that you can literally cook an egg on it (burned my finger on one). I just wish some mod site released an easy external PSU fix.

The other thing I noticed inside was they went with that stupid design similar to the XBox 360s x-clamps. The clamps on the PS3 that hold the heatsinks in place are so loving tight that you can see the motherboard flexing without even trying to see it. This obviously contributes to the CPU/GPU detaching; just like the 360. While the XBox 360 x-clamp replacement guides are awesome (they give you exact part numbers to get at Lowe's), there really isn't a good guide for the PS3 fats.

This must be what happened to mine . I think all the power cycles trying to get the flash exploit to work and install the cfw finally did it in.

Oh wow, you weren't joking? I can't imagine five or six times would destroy the system. Obviously it was on its last legs anyway.

Is it giving the yellow light of death?

Lets see if we can fix this

Yeah it's the ylod. There weren't any signs of it overheating while I was using it--the fan speed sounded normal for just browsing the xmb. I took the case off and cleaned a little bit of dust out but of course that didn't fix it. I'm thinking one of the chips just detached or possibly the hdd died? I tried booting it without the hdd but still get the ylod.

I was looking at fixes for solder problems and everything short of reballing the chips sounds temporary.

I bought one of his 60gigs and put cfw on it. The new version of the flash exploit for 4.82 is even better since you can go straight to the cfw you want without installing ferrox first.

Isn't Ferrox a type of cfw? This stuff is confusing. I switched to Ferrox Cobra because webman is so much better but I find things refuse to load regularly

Yeah. For some reason the old flash exploit only let you install a particular cfw (ferrox) so if you wanted rebug or something you would have to install ferrox first, then install rebug.

I'm using rebug 4.82 lite with webman. The only time I've had a game not load so far was during an ftp transfer so maybe that's the problem?

Sony made the ps4's only game free on ps+ this month to discourage piracy while they fix the firmware.

No it definitely wasn't during an FTP transfer. I will just get a black screen a decent amount of the time when trying to load MultiMan (which I still use to rip games since WebMan cannot) and I never had that happen on ReBug. Could it be something about the weird way WebMan has to delay loading USB info? It takes a good minute or two before my list of games will show up in WebMan (but they show up immediately in MultiMan).

I haven't tried loading games from USB yet. I have noticed that webman keeps an xml list of games so maybe building that takes awhile reading from USB if you add hundreds of games at once?

Just a small update: I switched from webman to sman and it was the best decision ever. Games load instantly now. Consider making the switch, to sman!

Nice. I installed a 1tb internal drive and have been sending games to that over ftp with webman and havent had any problems (as long as a transfer isn’t in progress.) Have you played around with any fan control settings? I have a cecha01 that I would like to run cooler than it does but I’m wary about changing those...

Don't update to 4.81 from Sony is all.

You wanna know how nuts I am about this thing? I have the one from when it came out mentioned in the OP. I opened it up and replaced the thermal paste and also cut out the grating in the back (so technically you can now stick your fingers in the fan blades) because of how paranoid I am about this thing ever dying on me.

But wait there's more. I also got a second one from a guy who replaces all of the lead free solder with lead solder. So even if it gets stupid hot, it will never desolder on its own.

That being said the number thing I wanna do is make the power supply external because you can no joke fry an egg on that thing but there isn't a single good guide out there on how to do it.

Anyway yeah you can safely speed up the fan if you like. The only negative is it's louder. My stock PS3 always sounded like a jet engine when it upscaled DVDs.

You can also swap in the power supply from one of the 80gb mgs4 models which runs cooler apparently. Anyway I got my launch model from the reballing genius guy you linked itt but he was only selling ones with lead-free solder unfortunately.

I don't even really know what those things mean. I know nand is like the firmware that's stored on a chip. No clue what nor is; I think it is important if you are going to hardmod the console??

Anyway it's pretty easy, it just looks like a lot of steps because of how I wrote it. Let me know if you have any problems and I can help you out

nand and nor are different kinds of flash memory (used to store the firmware.) when you're doing the exploit you need to pick the right one for your ps3 or it will brick: in general, fats use nand and slims use nor

I'm using an i5-11400 w/ integrated graphics (65w tdp, supports avx-512 instructions which give a 20% boost in rpcs3 https://www.overclock3d.net/news/software/rpcs3_developer_explains_why_avx-512_is_important_for_ps3_emulation_and_more/1) in an In Win Chopin case.

From what I've read a discrete gpu is only needed if you want to upscale the games.
