SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?
Yam Slacker
Subverted and Upgraded:

[MIDGE / HP:5/5 (RIG: 6/6)/ MOVE: 2 (RIG: 2)/ FUEL: 63 / LUXE: 183 / CYBER: SPINAL ANTENNA, VIRAL PROLIFERATOR, UPGRADE PROTOCOL] WEAPON MODS: [JD] TARGET ASSIST, UNSHIELDED ACCELERATOR, UNRULY K-FLANGER, RECOIL COMPENSATION

Midge looked at the scan data and sighed. "Skipp, it's a Horror- and Hive-infested deathtrap. See this?" He flashed over the data, 09.09: Stev, Weakened Particle Barrier, Damaged Heat Shields, Distressed Hull, Toxic Spores, Sucking Muck, Hive Mycogene, Catalyzing Horror, Venomous Horror, 4 Spore Spawn, 3 Sporebrood, then continued, "If I move there, the entire rig army is stuck permanently whilst we all get spammed with environmental effects and whatever those horrors and hivers do. If we had any choice in the matter, if we had time, I'd clear them all out at range first. We don't."

He opened up a channel to Stev because they were in adjacent hex shouting range. "Stev, we're approaching in force. Willing to leave your things alone if you can guarantee they will leave our things alone. Let us know which ones are yours and which ones need killing, we're summoning the Zodiac because it's the only way any of us are getting out of here alive."

Grimly, he gave the army its last move order.

All units to 09:09.

Stev perked up as he heard Midge's shout, and peered off into the distance, both with his eyes and his less common senses. There he was, with a full complement of rigs. Part of Stev dearly wanted to get his mandibles on those beta units, but he suppressed it. They were Midge's, after all, and he wasn't about to steal from a fellow wrecker.

"Sounds good to me! Come on in, the swamp's fine!" he shouted back, then turned to address his swarms "As for the rest of you... the wreckers and rigs that are about to show up? They're off limits. You will not attack them. We have much more important things to worry about right now."

Aethelred looked over the structural analysis of the rapidly disintegrating station several hundred thousands of kilometres "below" the Bellerophon, poring over the figures that Orbital Safety and Health Initiative, or OSHI, had pulled out of their asses on requestpainstakingly calculated for Pertinax. Sure enough, while there were indeed elevated risks of unfortunate side effects associated with using armoured orbital drop pods ordinarily reserved for troop and materiel delivery to surface locations, OSHI (how aptly named, Aethelred thought) declared their use safe enough to, quote unquote, "deploy in this instance without significant and immediately catastrophic risk of further destabilisation." Five minutes later, thanks to the generosity of veteran Wrecker Stev Ansahok, another attempt at supplying Mari Anne was en route, this time as a glimmer in the distance streaking toward Drop.

"Holy guacamole - there's a lot of bad juju going on here!"

Skipp Wiley Jr. took in one all-encompassing glance at the disastrous scene playing out before him and immediately wanted to turn back, but it was far too late for that. Midge and his Mighty Marching Machines were now messily mired in the Sinking Muck, and as much as they might try to move about they won't be much good for anything but fighting now, combating the enemy to their last, dying robotic breath. Skipp wanted to salute those brave, expendable rigs for their commendable service in the line of duty, so he did, but in a haphazard, ironic way. He hoped that the pilots that were still stuck inside the rigjacked machines had made peace with their lot in life with whatever dwindling time they had left.

With his compound eyes scanning the entire region on full alert, Skipp noted the discolored shielding from a Weakened Particle Barrier overhead. That particular patch of bad rad-blocking was emitting gnarly beams of Neotype-unfriendly radiation from a point in the domed barrier that was upsettingly close to a section of Distressed Hull. The hull had been blasted with some ship's laz-fire, from the look of it, but then it had been hastily repaired with rudimentary and clearly temporary stopgap measures. It looked like the whole shebang was liable to be blown into space at the slightest provocation...

As if that all wasn't bad enough, the region was absolutely lousy with Horrors and Hivers he'd never seen before, each side fighting over a turf filled with Toxic Spores! The Hivers, it would seem, were technically on their side, in theory if not in practice. Skipp wasn't quite sure how Midge had managed to work it out with Stev, but he gotten the impression that Stev still had some shreds of humanity left in him, enough at least to keep some empathy around. Good. Skipp didn't have the time nor the energy to deal with being infested with Rook's mutated bees, not while there was a Zodiac Rig to defeat.

Skipp was lining up a shot on the Catalyzing Horror when he noticed the Wrecker Mari-Anne slinking in from the jungle, clearly drawn to all the fighting. Skipp pulled out his Deployable Cover and called out to everyone he could reach within local Comms range:

"Everyone that can hear this - get behind Cover! I'm Deploying some now!"

Midge, Mari-Anne, and Stev can peek:
Encounter: Skipp activates his Deployable Cover and shares it with Midge, Mari-Anne, Stev, Stev's Hiver's, and Midge's Rigs! (+1 DR, +Cover) Skipp takes Cover!

If all of Midge's rigs are Disabled by the Weakened Particle Barrier, Skipp will activate his Newtype talent to mimic the Neosoldat talent and will Suppress the enemy as a free action!

There was a certain rightness to coming full circle, here as they approached the end of the third episode. He'd been with Stev on Salt from the very first round, and they'd ended it cracking the vault together. They were both there at the end on Rime, blasting Capricorn, the last two wreckers to deal damage to it. Now here, with Scorpio awaiting, they both stood as the masters of subverted forces, in an extremely vulnerable part of the station.

"Time to take out everything that isn't a Wrecker or controlled by one."

He eyed the particle barrier: His forces were potentially vulnerable to it, so that necessitated a degree of flexibility.

Mari-Anne, Skipp and Stev witness: The suppression level needed is five. With both neo-Soldats and the deployed cover, if everything goes well, two of my rigs will suppress. If there is a problem with either neo-soldat or the cover deployment, my rigs will cover the suppression shortfall to keep the suppression level at five. If they are not disabled, Gamma Enforcer and one Gamma Crawler will suppress. If they are, suppression duty will pass up the chain to keep suppression at five, order of suppression duty substitution being Gamma Crawler 2, Gamma Crawler 3, Beta Enforcer, Beta Crawler, Beta Crusher. If Stev misses the Catalyzing Horror, Beta Crawler shoot the catalyzing horror instead, and Beta Crusher adds Catalyzing horror to its target list. Otherwise, All rigs not on suppression duty shoot the Venomous Horror, and the Beta Crusher's target list is venomous horror, spore spawn, spore spawn, spore spawn, spore spawn. All rigs and Midge make use of the deployed cover. If all rigs are disabled, Midge will suppress.

Wishlist:Should be enough for now.

Stev waved at the incoming wreckers, to no apparent reaction. Really, that was rather rude of--oh, wrong unit. Stev waved again, this time with his main body that was squatting atop the Mycogene. Midge was much the same as ever. Some different decorations, and the sinking army of rigs was new, but otherwise he was much the same man that he had been back on Drop. Mari Anne was, remarkably, still alive and in perfect health. She must not have been dragged into Between, whatever that was--Stev gave her a nod. But it was the last one, Skipp... he had potential. Stev's senses, which he did not have or need names for, were practically screaming at him that the boy was a natural vector, full of possibility. His fingers twitched involuntarily, and for an instant the swarm converged on Skipp, before coming to a stop. No. Not now. Not yet.

"Welcome to the shitshow," Stev remarked dryly as he hopped down from his perch. "Horrors, hivers, and catastrophic structural damage, we've got it all. Glad you're all here, though--friends have to stick together, right? Right. Speaking of friends, the hivers aren't your enemy here, so don't worry about that--it's only the horrors that are a problem, and they're also an opportunity. For me, at least. So let's get them cleared out so we can get this done, and you can all enjoy the catering."

The Horrors were regrouping now, undaunted by the sheer number of invaders in their home. But once again, Stev swarmed them, clogging their senses with insects as he stepped behind the cover that Skipp had deployed. Oh, this was really bringing back memories.

"Good choice of target" he said to Skipp as he lined up a follow-up shot. "That one will be useful."

Team Shitshow Can Peek:
Beem the Catalyzing Horror: 1d14 13, infesting it. Suppressing, taking cover for free.

Dr. Wiley realized that he was on the edge of his seat and biting his nails, watching the ongoing holo-feed of his boy and the other Wreckers fighting against a horrendously vicious Horror nest. Dr. Wiley had prepared stringently for a plethora of endgame scenarios when he first curated his Wrecker Challenge list, but now it seemed like the Wreckers had most everything else well in hand. All that was left for Junior to do was to pull on that lever atop the Zodiac beacon and see what emerged...

"C'mon, Junior. All you've got to do is stick the landing. Keep your weapon raised and don't let those remaining horrors give you any guff!

He absentmindedly struck the key on his Sponsor Console to upload all the changes he'd made to his Challenges list. His eyes, meanwhile, were glued to the holo-screen.

Things were going relatively well for Skipp Wiley Jr. and the Wreckers in their battle for Drop's centermost weather pylon, at least until the moment Stev was whisked away from combat. The Bee-infested Veteran was snatched up by a pair of Venomous Horrors, caught up by their tongues and dragged far downrange, likely to his doom. Despite the surprise and dismay at seeing the double-Veteran Wrecker removed from battle so quickly and so soon, Skipp had maintained his course. He focused his Hulking Warpoon's fire onto the Catalyzing Horror, keeping the gruesome thing pinned to the wall and electrocuted for as long as was necessary.

Despite the electroharpoons, the Catalyzing Horror he'd skewered had still managed to get a good hit in on Skipp. The lancing pain in the gash it caused bubbled and burned and flared as acidic blood sprayed across the battlefield from the gaping wound.

Caustic Haemorrhexis versus Catalyzing Horror, Spore Spawn (every other target was protected by Deployable Cover): 2#1d4 4 1 - 1 extra damage was dealt to Catalyzing Horror last round!

"How do you like that, you son of a gun?" Skipp growled at the speared horror between clenched, teeth. "Now stick around my shish-kebabed scaly friend - I've got higher and better places to be."

While shoving luxe into the reloader hopper for his Deployable Cover, Skipp powered up Kilroy's jet thrusters and effortlessly ascended to the top of Pod 5's weather pylon, where a newly-built platform with a very important switch awaited him.

Skipp set his mount Kilroy down to his low hovering jets and hopped off, stepping directly before a large switch with the symbol for the Scorpio Zodiac overhead. He lifted his weapon high up in the air and shouted to the heavens:

"I hereby claim the Scorpio Zodiac Beacon for Cosmiq Pharmaware - 'Why reach beyond the sun, when you can think with COSMIQ!'"

Skipp Wiley Jr. pulled the lever and awaited the glory to come.

Bobby-Jack cursed under his breath as the bullet he'd shot through the first corvid's skull failed to kill the one behind it. These things were far tougher than he had predicted for a bunch of birds to be. And now it was calling its friends.

Great.

He probably should start fixing his sights for the onslaught.

The squidpack's cloud is slow to disperse. The all consuming black fades to a yellow haze. Horrors. They haven't noticed Scramble yet. She reloads the pack. One of the lanky horrors perks up, looking towards the center of the pod. A long, lithe tail lashes out and drags something through the shallow water, kicking up a wide, vee-shaped wake. The figure stands nonchalantly. Another Wrecker! Then bees vomit forth, swarming the largest horror. Stev.

"Stev! Verminous vector! Your bees are crawling around the edge of my mind." Scramble yells as she stalks forward. "The other's might buy your take-it-or-leave infestation act, but I know better. I assimilated a healthy chunk of hive DNA, I know what it is." The modified brood wriggles from her flesh as her wounds slowly heal. She continues her advance heedless of the horrors. "I know the imperatives built in there. I feel their shadow. So here I am, knitting my skin back together instead of what I need to be doing, just so your mind/hive doesn't worm its way in 'accidentally'. Bah!" Scramble spits and it lands hissing in the water. She's almost to Stev. Her arm draws back. She brings it forward, stops just short of his chest, taps the chrome plating. A wave of vital energy sweeps over Stev.

Action: Therapeutic Radiation healing Scramble and Stev.
Reload Squidpack with luxe.

"Now go kill the Zodiac quickly. That's the last favor I do." Scramble hisses. She turns and inhales deeply, preparing to deply her lift bladders.

The island was quickly turning into a giant chaotic brawl, with Stev being whisked away by a horror's tongue, Skipp rushing for the Zodiac beacon and dozens of horror spawn dying.
Mari rushed across the open ground durign a momentary lull in the shooting and began scaling one of the allied rigs, looking for a somewhat safer place. Dropping in through the hatch, she found it occupied by a fellow wrecker: Bonjour! It's Midge, right? Ça va? I hear you have an open position pour une tireuse? Gonna get myself strapped in real quick
Oh, and by the way: I've been chased by two real dangerous horrors for quite a while now, I had a bit of a headstart, so I'd expect them to arrive here very soon, unless they get scared off by your muderblob of rigs

Midge headed for the Particle Barrier, Fabrikit in his rigs' manipulators. He got to work, strengthening the field emitters to make sure there would be no interference. He sent out an order to the rest of his units to free themselves from the mire, and reloaded his kit when the repairs were done. As he did so, he welcomed aboard Mari-Anne, smiling behind his mask and addressing her.

"Welcome, bienvenue! Make yourself comfortable, there's a great view from the gunner's seat. Incoming horrors, you say? I wouldn't worry about that."

As one, the various rigs in the process of freeing themselves trained their weapons in the direction Mari Anne had approached from, perfectly situated for an ambush.

"I'm a Junker, incoming enemies are the best kind of enemies for us. And right now? we have a very big enemy incoming."

He checked a few readouts, and deployed his medical drone upwards to where Skipp had just pressed the Zodiac button, instructing it to bring him up to full health. It was going to be touch and go from here, and upping their survival odds was the sensible thing to do.

Action: Use Fabrikit on Particle Barrier. Reload Fabrikit with luxe. Heal Skipp 3hp via Dr.One. Autoscan, Propagate scan to Skipp, Mari Anne, Stev, and Scramble. Autoambush. Order the rigs to pull themselves out of the mire.

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?

Stev was Not Happy. It wasn't enough that he'd been pulled away from the fight, not enough that he'd nearly been killed, saved only by fast thinking and faster reflexes, but now Scramble, who he was positive had set off the alarm that had gotten these horrors all hot bothered, was moralizing at him? Really? Really? He wasn't about to let this stand.

"Yeah, sure. You could've stopped all this back on Rime, no hassle, but it was more important to just wander off, wasn't it? But no, it's my fault for getting caught out when I tried to put an end to things. There isn't an easy out for me here, you realize? I don't get to walk out of here to a guest spot on talk shows. Rook bought out my sentence! If I leave this station, I'm walking straight into being a test subject for the rest of my life, and who knows how long that's going to be! My one shot is getting this hulk operational again, and there's only one way I'm getting that done! I don't! Have! Options!"

Stev watched impassively as Scramble reached out to heal him. No effect, of course. His biology was just too alien at this point--Rook had seen to that. He ripped another cluster out of his chest cavity and tossed it on the ground behind him. Hopefully that would distract the horrors for a while.

"So yeah, sorry that there's collateral damage. Sorry that I inconvenienced you. And you know what? I mean that. I actually do. But I wouldn't have done anything differently. I couldn't have."

Action: Spawn a Cluster

Midge was glad he was inside a rig and wearing a vac-suit as Pertinax deployed another payload into the stricken station. When he saw who it was, his smile faded behind the mask.

"You wear the face of my friend, Warhulk. She lost her life today. Count yourself very lucky I have bigger fish to fry. Want to join our hunt against Scorpio in honour of your predecessor?"

His freed Beta rigs approached, and he distributed a coffin nail to each of them, and the Megascope to the Beta Crusher, everything locked and loaded to spring the ambush...

"Be on fleek, with Cosmiq!" Skipp Wiley Jr. gave a big thumbs up to all the the nano-camera drones flitting every which way around the central dais of Pod 5, directly underneath the flashing Zodiac Beacon. Hyperconfetti choked the air around him.

Skipp felt a rumbling underfoot as the Scorpio rig surfaced far below, called by the boy's summons. "Cripes on a cybercracker," Skipp uttered, hopping onto Kilroy Fitzgerald's back. "Welp, I suppose that's my cue!" He fired up Kilroy's jets to vacate the area.

As if on cue, a delivery contained inside Pertinax's Pummelpod suddenly burst through the Distressed Hull overhead, exposing everything around them to the vacuum of space.

"As if this couldn't get any worse!" Skipp shouted over the sound of rushing air escaping, jamming on the thrusters' controls. That's when a Cry-1 model warhulk stepped out from from the Pummelpod's crash site.

Skipp called out over the short range Comms to all the Wreckers who could hear:

Midge, Mari-Anne, Stev, Scramble can peek:

Stev swore loudly as the Pummelpod made its explosive entrance through the hull. That would be another hole he was going to have to fix. More importantly, though, that was going to keep him out of there for the time being. Staying out in the vacuum was perfectly safe for him, but the transition always put some real stress on his systems, and he wasn't confident that he was feeling up to that particular risk right now. No, he was going to have to heal up and try and get a spacesuit and some armor dropped in last-second. And hope that Scorpio was still alive, which was far from guaranteed with all the firepower arrayed against it.

He ignored Scramble as she left, instead instructing the converted Horror to stay back and protect the cluster. Not that it would likely succeed, but he didn't want Mari Anne getting pulled to her doom by these things. That done, he stomped off into the jungle--there was supposed to be a toxic zone nearby. Even if it was radioactive, he'd be willing to pay the short term cost if it got him back in the fight sooner.

Well, no wonder they were such a pain. Looking closer, they were robots rather than bird.

Bobby-Jack eyed the corvid. He could easily kill it with many weapons in his arsenal. But to actually do so would be an act of rash foolishness. He remembered the thing's purpose within the murder. Which meant that a number of its friends were likely aiming at him right now. So the choice he should take if he wished to retain his mortality was to instead evade and take stock of the enemy assault.

A cloud of inky blackness followed as Bobby-Jack activated his squidpack and dived into the underbrush past the corvid, skevering its skull into his retractible blade as he went.

Stev was in a bad way. There was no hiding it anymore. He was surprised he'd held himself together while talking to Scramble--apparently spiteful indignation was a powerful motivator. But it was getting hard, now. The perspectives were getting overwhelming, now. Too much sensory input passing through too small a choke point, housed in too damaged a body. He'd had to disable his mechanical diagnostics a long ways back, because the constant alarms were too much to see through.

And it wasn't just the senses, either. He was feeling strangely tight. He'd felt hints of it before, but shedding a cluster had always made the sensation subside. He clutched at his sides and felt the metal plating shift under his hands. Just a little bit longer he told himself. Midge knows what he's doing. Just hang in there a little bit longer. The alarm barely registered when it went off--in the scope of things, one alarm versus all of the other sounds was insignificant, no matter how loud it was. But the sight of Cryo caught his attention. A fellow wrecker! An ally! A friend! A...

No.

That wasn't Cryo at all. Stev swung wildly with hammer and beam, but the warhulk had the drop on him.

It was already too late.

Scramble squints in the direction of the central hex. Chaos. When she closes her eyes she can see sparks as high energy particles interact with her vitreous fluid. That can't be a good sign. No matter, her biology would stand up to a some hard rads. She reloads the launcher and replays the footage. What a mess.

"Quite a party, eh Cryo?" Scramble looks over at the corpse. "But enough of that, it's past time you were safe. It's too spicy out here."

The brood boils from Scramble's flesh. With Frau she had held back from direct consumption due to some misguided squeamishness. Now though, she needs biomass and she needs to save Cryo. No time to let the swarm do all the work. Scramble reaches out as she lift her mask.

"This? This is why I was saving the Junker's Delight until it needed to be fired."

He indicated the horrendously radioactive death-hex that he and Mari-Anne had escaped from thanks to the K-Flanger upgrade.

"My army is dead, but that's to be expected. Scorpio is marked for death, the Junker's Delight will see to that. All we need to do, here and now, is live."

He used his Fabrikit to restock Dr.One, replacing what had been used to heal Skipp, then reloaded the Fabrikit.

Fabrikit on Dr.One: 1d6-1 3

He scanned, prepared to send the scan data out to the other wreckers, then set up an ambush just in case.

Fabrikit on Dr. One, reload fabrikit with Luxe, autoambush, autoscan, propagate scan data to Mari-Anne, Skipp, Stev and Scramble if they're in range.

Finally, he checked a readout on the Junker's Delight, and smiled at the nearest camera drone.

"That aftershock should be hitting Scorpio right about..."

He snapped his fingers.

Caustic Haemorrhexis versus Scorpio: Bleed Him to Death: 1d20 13 - Success! 4/2 = 2 Damage dealt to Scorpio last Encounter!

It had all happened so fast. Skipp and Kilroy had swung in on the Warpoon's cable just as Midge, Mari-Anne, and Cry-1 had each been been blasted away from the main fight with the Zodiac Rig, leaving Skipp and Kilroy to contend with Scorpio all on their own. With two precise and horrendously swift motions, Scorpio snapped Kilroy up with a claw and lashed out with the massive sting on its tail, piercing Kilroy's neck and injecting him with a cocktail of lethal venoms. It took only a moment, but a moment was all it took. As soon as Scorpio retracted its sting and cast Kilroy's body aside, Skipp knew that Kilroy was going to die if he didn't get medical treatment immediately.

That's when Scramble's charge-powered Scrambler-spines and cluster detonation rounds struck, raining down across the sky and destroying everything on the battlefield without a trace of regard for collateral damage. Both Kilroy Fitzgerald and Skipp were blown sideways by the immense blast wave. Skipp was pierced and tossed and pinned under Kilroy and and everything went dark...

After all the explosions had finished rocking the station's center-most weather pylon apart, the darkness enveloping Skipp was finally met with silence. Indescribable pain blossomed in a place deep within Skipp's consciousness, proving only one thing to him: the universe was a cold and uncaring place, and yet - in spite of all that - against all odds - he was alive.

Skipp Wiley Junior started dragging himself out of the wreckage from underneath the charred remains of Kilroy, coughing and sputtering up caustic blood that sizzled faintly on the insides of his Hazmat Gear. He stumbled onto his wobbly feet and took in the scene of utter devastation that was laid out before him.

Scorched gore, mechanical guts, catastrophic ruin and destruction lay in every which direction, with the fearsome Scorpio rig bubbling away to slag at the center of it all, irradiated to the absolute limits of its structural integrity.

Skipp spat a gob of acid blood into the corner of his spacer suit's helmet and uttered an oath. "Good riddance to bad company," he said.

With nothing in the area left to threaten him, Skipp dug around the wreckage under Kilroy's body in order to find a very precious item in his kit - one he'd protected personally with his body when the all explosions had struck.

"Here goes nothing..." Skipp intoned, holding the cherished thing out at arm's length. "Let's make Kilroy proud."

Stev stared at the ceiling. It was hard not to, when you were lying flat on your back. He'd wound up back where he'd started, he was pretty sure. There wouldn't be a cluster already here if he hadn't. But his hammer had exploded when he'd swung at the Not-Cryo, and then he was pretty sure he'd been grabbed by one of the horrors, and then there had been a bunch of explosions where Scorpio was...

He sat up, the horrors watching him warily, and brushed off some of the muck that had been floating in the foul water. Whatever had happened during all of that, he was still alive, which was what really mattered. Actually... everyone was still alive. Or the death beacons hadn't gone off properly, that was technically a possibility too. And Scorpio was still operational, although he was pretty sure that wasn't going to be for much longer. Which meant that everyone else would be getting off the station soon... and he was going to find out if all his hard work had paid off.

He just had to wait it out.
