[Sponsor Luxe: 30] Dr. Wiley wasn't exactly sleeping, but he wasn't wholly awake either. He was straining to stay focused on the simul-cast holofeeds of his son, Junior, but he just couldn't help himself from nodding off in his gyro-grav chair. He'd tried turning on the omni-chair's heated massage pads, but that only made things worse. It's not that Dr. Wiley wasn't interested in what happened, it's just that he'd been having such a hard time keeping track of all of Junior's many plans to trap the Hyperchurch's manhunter, and he was tired of seeing his boy constantly tucking his tail between his legs running from all his encounters... Frustrated, and flustered by his own failing energy reserves, Dr. Wiley slammed the button for caffeine service and massaged his temples as he waited for the auto-caff to come wheeling into his office. The door slowly glided open of its own volition and the drink-dispensing machine carted itself in, already sputtering out the final drops of Dr. Wiley's favorite piping hot pick-me-up drink. Dr. Wiley took a miniscule sip of the dark brown drink offered to him and grimaced at its bitterness. He reached over and pumped a couple levers on the auto-caff's serving arm in order to inject a creamy fluid and a sweetening agent into his mug. He took a second sip, frowned in mild approval, and squirted in another pump of sucralose before waving off the robot without a single word. Dr. Wiley slurped his hot drink noisily as the auto-caff exited and the office door slowly closed behind it. He was back at work! Dr. Wiley knew that he couldn't help his son, not directly at least. He had to focus on the big picture, and sometimes to form that big picture you had to solve a puzzle. Dr. Wiley accessed his Sponsor account in his console and set up a challenge to reward the seekers of Dark's four major puzzle pieces. COSMIQ SURVIVAL CHALLENGES (1-7):

It was a shame to leave all that valuable luxe and biomatter behind, but he couldn't let himself get distracted by a protracted firefight with two pesky firebugs when there was still a tremendously deadly sniper on the loose! Besides, Skipp knew that his fellow Wreckers Hievel, Aotzzzuo and Katydid would be in the area shortly to pick up the things that he'd left and to split up whatever scraps they could salvage from the Gamma Bounders' wrecks. Best of all, nobody had gotten shot by the Hyperchurch's manhunter! While Skipp had been occluded in the Squidpack's smokescreen, the deafening roar of a massive rifle shot had rung out from somewhere nearby, a noisy report that echoed throughout the cave system but ultimately hit nothing. Skipp even checked the feeds to see if his friends were okay, and they apparently hadn't gotten so much as a scratch on them! Katya was still on fire, however (a detail that Skipp had entirely failed to notice earlier) but that was something that Skipp knew could be dealt with easily enough. Skipp inflated his drift bladders and sprung up high into the cavernous reaches above, where he grappled onto a stalactite and clung there, hidden well within the shadows. From there, he performed a wide-range scan of the area with his Compound Eyes. While his eyes and scanners were on broad-spectrum alert, he reloaded his Squidpack with some of the detritus he'd gathered from the Gamma Bounder's cockpit. Skipp knew that if he spotted the Metastatik-wielding Hyperchurch manhunter, it was all over for them. Skipp had the power to fight them and the will to overcome whatever the sniper threw at him. "C'mon, you son of a gun," Skipp muttered to himself, "I know you're here somewhere..." Action: Skipp reloads his Squidpack! As a free action, Skipp performs a range 1 wide-scan of the area around him (centered on 19.02)! He didn't see the Metastatik Manhunter anywhere in any of his visual scans whatsoever. Though he hadn't been exerting himself, Skipp's sweat started to percolate on his blue skin, an early indicator of the onset of a mild panic. If the sniper wasn't around in this location, then where in Dark could he possible be? "No- that's wrong..." the blue Wrecker begged his comms viewscreen, frowning. "There must be some kind of mistake!" He gave his sealed helmet a couple experimental whacks with his fist to see if some percussive maintenance might rejigger his viewfinder's sensory mechanisms, but in the end hitting himself repeatedly on the head made no difference other than making Skipp look even more like a fool. Try as he might to change matters, the Hyperchurch's sniper remained an undisclosed threat on Skipp's currently-traceable contact list. Even though he couldn't immediately see the sniper's position, according to the regional scan data, there was a lot of local hostile activity to stay aware of. Just nearby there was a Myrmecoid Myrmedon that had caught his scent and would be following him soon enough, and to the south were the two Mutant Ashstalkers that were also in lava-hot pursuit. He'd have to move around quite a bit avoid those three, and soon. To the west, meanwhile, was a mining rig and some questionable corpses, and to the north, well... Skipp stared at the alert stating "[Reactive Scan detected! Outgoing transmission detected!]" and began to wonder whether the Hyperchurch sniper's scan-bafflers were directly responsible. That's when the realization dawned upon Skipp: the last time the Hyperchurch's manhunter was scanned, they didn't send out a transmission like that - they came up as "Skipp" on the readouts! This Reactive Scanner was something else entirely! "Of course!" Skipp exclaimed, "The sniper falsifies his Scan-ID, that sneaky snake!" With renewed vigor, Skipp returned to his investigation of the available scan data. He could account for the Myrmecoid Myrmidon, the Ashstalkers, and the Reactive Scanner (whatever it was), which, through deduction, reduced the candidates to the GR-49 Prospekt and the Dimensional Shambles. Skipp was comparing his current wide-scan recordings to various encounters mined from the old Wrecker feeds when he discovered something interesting. He was overlaying a sped-up Wrecker-feed of ℟, who had visited the Hermes X-Cav Station in order to reload their kit and commandeer a GR-49 Prospekt rig. ℟ had taken that mining rig with him, leaving an angry Mutant Stargazer and two Drudges behind. Not only should that rig no longer be there, there should be three hostile mutants contacts there instead. Odd. "Got you now, Mother Hubbard." Skipp said, locking his scanners' tracking sensors onto his target. A sly grin spread across his face. Movement: Without taking his scanners off the "GR-49 Prospekt" contact in 18.02, Skipp moves (via Jump) accordingly:

He counted himself to be a particularly lucky Newtype to be so much more mobile than his opponents. For the first time in a very good, long while, Skipp was practically giddy from the anticipation of the hunt - it was actually happening, and soon! For the first time since he'd created Cry-Havoc and lost both his favorite weapons, Skipp was armed, he was dangerous, and he had finally made visual contact with his elusive target, the Metastatik-wielding Manhunter. Now, at last, the hunter had become the hunted! Tracking down the Hyperchurch sniper and staying within Comms range of his allies would be a cinch for Skipp - he'd planned his movements well out in advance. All he had to do was to keep zipping back and forth until his three pursuers were tired from running around in circles and his prey had run itself ragged from trying to outpace him. When the Hyperchurch sniper would inevitably stop to take a break or fight back, Skipp would position himself somewhere near his friends and take his shot... After he'd left the Hive Ashstalkers and Myrmecoid Myrmidon far behind him, Skipp found a defensible spot that looked relatively safe and lined up his Hulking Warpoon's trajectory markers with the target he'd been following: the GR-49 Prospekt he'd scanned with the spoofed ID. "'GR-49 Prospekt my rear. No one outsmarts a Wiley!" Skipp clucked to himself, taking careful aim at the Hyperchurch's musclebound sniper, hidden somewhere within the wandering mining rig. "Eat spear, Jesus freak!" There was a loud, ripping roar from a supersonic implosion as time seemed to slow to a crawl: the fabric of reality was being torn asunder. Strange ultraviolet eldritch lights flickered ominously around a spectrally-curtained portal directly in front of Skipp, a fractalized hallway lined with claws, teeth, and tentacles, gnashing and thrashing and ripping the portal wider apart. Skipp's hair stood on end. His breath was caught in his lungs, his heart couldn't seem to beat fast enough, and worst of all, he could see something emerging from the deepest, darkest recesses in the dimensional tear in reality - something coming from somewhere far away - and it most assuredly wasn't Aotzzzuo. In slow-motion, Skipp watched with mounting horror and bated breath as the monstrous, abstracted form of Cry-3 accelerated like a bullet train down the interdimensional corridor of claws and fangs, launching itself through the dimensional rift and into reality, careening directly at Skipp. Time seemed to unfreeze with disastrous speed as Skipp attempted to scream and pull the trigger of the Hulking Warpoon at once, to fire his weapon directly at the inbound interdimensional warhulk before it could make impact with reality using its impossible mass and terrible momentum, but he was too late. Cry-3 struck through Skipp like a meteor made of tentacles and teeth crashing to the earth at terminal velocity. There was a momentary flash of searing, blinding pain all across Skipp's body as every bone shattered and crumbled to powder. Skipp's utterly destroyed, pulverized body was instantly reduced to splattered gore, his acidic blood vaporized by the sheer force behind Cry-3's unstoppable reentry into the third dimension. Just like that, Skipp Wiley Jr. was no more. - - - - - - Darkness - - - - - - Just like that, Skipp Wiley Jr. came back into being. It was cold. There was a Mutant Darkstalker directly in front of him, looking incredibly alarmed. They were both of them covered in gore and guts. Skipp didn't like any of this at all. Thankfully his Hulking Warpoon was already out, pointed directly at the shocked muta-human. Skipp was already in the middle of pulling the trigger after all, wasn't he? [Sponsor Luxe: 35] "What in the world was that? What WAS that? What even IS that?" Dr. Wiley screamed at the frozen holofeed image of Cry-3, the tentacled warhulk roaring in front of a dimensional portal. He fumbled for the holofeed's controls so that he could rewind it back to the part where everything had gone pear-shaped. It had all happened so quickly, he'd practically missed what was going on in the chaos and destruction that followed. One moment Junior was standing there, taking aim at the Hyperchurch's sniper, positioned in a region with two Gamma Crawlers and a Hermes Mag, the next moment there was an intense dimensional aberration right in front of him and Junior was totally obliterated by it instantly, telefragged by the sudden explosive appearance of the shambling interdimensional bioconstruct Cry-3. Dr. Wiley froze the holofeed on the exact moment that it happened so he could see it in all its gruesome detail, just to be sure. His son Junior was dead! Dr. Wiley didn't know what to think of that. On top of which - just as all the doctors had warned him - Junior's death seemed to coincide with the appearance of a dimensional portal. However it worked, the strange interdimensional gateway remained, undulating and swirling in place beside the monster Cry-3. Dr. Wiley felt sick to his stomach, watching the fractalized hallways churning and spinning through infinite similar cosmic connections. Dr. Wiley couldn't stare at it any longer. He put the holofeed on mute and got back to work. Dr. Wiley was already halfway through the process of submitting a Wrecker challenge to collect his son's remains when the cam drones located Junior's lifesigns. When he saw the holofeeds of Junior resuming - from a completely new location on Dark's map - he was skeptical at first, but he still deep down wanted to believe that was truly his son down there, even though this was obviously some kind of horrible Wrecking Crew cloning prank on Cosmiq's shareholders. Either way, no death beacon had lit up and Dr. Wiley was still stuck looking at his limited-access Sponsor controls. It was either take this blue-skinned charlatan for his son or wait and see how well the clone did, let Wrecking Crew's dangers sort it all out. Maybe his son was somehow in there, after all? The only way to be absolutely sure would be to see the boy through to the end... Before existential despair got the better of him, Dr. Wiley got to work writing up a new Challenge that he hoped would reward Wreckers for tackling Cry-3 in a sensible and hopefully painful manner. COSMIQ SURVIVAL CHALLENGES (1-8):

He had the strangest feeling of déja-vu he was trying to fight, some glimmer of a thought just on the edge of his recollection that, try as he might, he just couldn't seem to grasp - like clutching at handfuls of sand in the midst of a sandstorm. As he struggled to reconstruct his old train of thought, his hands busied themselves by wiping down the electrolance and fitting it into the Hulking Warpoon's ammo stowage compartment. By the time he was done with the reloading process, the lingering sensation of having missed something important had almost fully passed. Skipp was completely alone now, for the first time in what - hours? Weeks? Months?.. Years? Skipp tried to think about what he'd been doing only ten minutes prior and was drawing a complete and utter blank - everything from then and earlier was blurry grey static. Furthermore, his body was on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion and blood loss. Worrying. Skipp shivered as he scanned the pre-dawn sky of Mercury. The thermal heat stored in his body armor Heliopause was absolutely useless to him here. Skipp tried to remember where he'd gotten the heat-resistant suit and could only recall flashes of a horrifying skeletal cyborg, floating in D-Space and gathering ethereal energy... He tried not to think of it further. He was going to die out here if he didn't get immediate medical attention, and imagining a spectral visage of death was not very helpful. He stamped his feet to warm up and got to work taking stock of his available options. Skipp set down his pack and started rummaging through it, looking for anything that could help him survive out here in the cold. There was an early-edition Optifalconoid in its travel form, a Volatile Compound locked away in a tightly sealed container, some kind of... alien mechanical prop, a bunch of Horror Chow he didn't remember packing, a backup Purifier Retrovirus, an upsettingly empty Medikit, and - most curious of all - a Coffin Nail with a holy symbol etched into the tip. Skipp didn't remember getting that little item at all! He sat the precious oddity carefully aside and kept looking for more surprises. With daylight approaching from the east, they should probably start the Zodiac fight soon if they didn't want to be roasted alive, so hopefully the group up in the cavern would start moving south ASAP. But someone would have to watch their backs if they didn't want to be harassed by the church's sniper the entire time, they were after all so very squishy. So Anne decided to move up and play roadblock for a while. Move to 20.05 Supply request: A Mutagen and a Medkit sheep-dodger fucked around with this message at 17:17 on Sep 22, 2018 |

He tried not to scare himself with how close he'd been to dying earlier without that Experimental Medikit, so he occupied himself with mundane matters of sorting through his kit and cross-referencing his Scan data with his map-feeds to keep his mind at ease. Before he could get away from this place of dismally Dark desolation he needed to keep his more worrying thoughts at bay. Once he'd taken the time to orient himself with his map and get his pack put back together, Skipp had an urgent choice to make: find shelter or die. On one hand he could stay outside in the freezing darkness and slowly succumb to the numbing cold and ambient radiation of Mercury's dangerously exposed pre-dawn surface, and on the other hand he could make his way inside the geothermally-active cavern system nearby and soak up a bunch of thermal radiation in the process. He was caught between the the freezer and the frying pan, and he had to make a choice: weather the cold or feel the burn. It was simple: it was all a matter of survival. Skipp fully inflated his drift bladders for the first time in what felt like a very long while and leapt off into the distance, jumping in great bounds towards the glow of the miners' lights. [Sponsor Luxe: 33] Dr. Wiley stared gloomily at the shimmering holofeed of what was supposed to be his son Junior - the Veteran Wrecker - making his arduous trek toward the nearest glowing cave entrance, a path which would ultimately take him to the relative safety of the underground Hermes mining camps. He could tell that the boy was an excellent facsimile of Junior - the cloners and kit refabbers had really outdone themselves this time! Not only was the boy just nearly the right shade of blue, the Junior-copy's weapon and armor had also been faithfully recreated too, seemingly from scratch! Dr. Wiley drummed his fingers on the armrest of his omni-chair. He'd just have to wait and see how this blue boy doppelganger acted in the presence of other humans before he'd be willing to accept him as his own, at least on paper. Lord knows making official statements on sentient beings purported to be dead was an especially tricky wicket with Cosmiq's Legal Department! "Come on, Junior! Don't muck it up!" said Dr. Wiley, more for the office cameras than for himself. If he was going to make this work out for him from a legal angle he was going to have to play the part of the unwitting dupe. Dr. Wiley pulled up the controls for his limited-access, open-spending Sponsorship account and filed the paperwork for a new Wrecker Challenge. With both Cry-3 and the Hyperchurch's sniper about, there were many viable candidates for this new Challenge, one that required multiple hits on the same target without getting hit in turn.
