This week sucks and needs to be done already. I stopped by the local gas station before work to grab a drink. After backing out to leave and starting to pull out towards the exit, a chevy 3500 with a big flatbed tray on the back started backing up. I noticed him just before he started crumpling my front passenger fender in, so no time to honk or evade him. Even better, the guy driving it was one of my regulars at work and he instantly recognized me. Yay.

Now for the lovely part, at the end of october, my insurance expired and I have yet to renew it since they jumped my 6 month rate up $600 to $2300 for me and my mother on my car that is worth... around $4000. Neither one of us has had any accidents or tickets in the last 3 years, but my insurance is still fuckoff expensive, even compared to people with sports cars and DUIs on their record. :sigh:

The good part is that the guy who backed into me is more than willing to help pay for the stuff since the damage appears minor upon both my inspection and his. Even better, the tray on his truck was heavy gauge diamond plate. I didn't even scratch the loving enamel paint on it. Current inventory of damage is:
Passenger front fender (we can source one new thats unpainted through work for $36.85 and I know a good body guy through work that'll do side work if my boss bats her eyelashes at him a few times.)
Headlight locating bracket (Dorman and tyc make replacements, sub $40)
Front passenger marker light ($15 from tyc through work)

Only question mark is why I have no power running to my front passenger headlight. I'll have to disassemble it monday and see if the harness got pinched. I work back to back 12s tomorrow and sunday, so uhhh, heres to hoping I don't get pulled over in the next 2 nights. :smithicide:

Pictures of the carnage:

The small tab in the second picture is whats actually causing the misalignment with the headlight. Can't bend it back out without pulling out the fender. My fun task for monday.

Edit: Oh god drat it, bent some of the metal out of the way so I could inspect the passenger headlight and harness. The bottom of the headlight assembly is smashed. Those fuckers are $200ish for the cheapos like I have in there now. Oem is $675ish. Each.

As I was pulling into a parking space today, the guy in the car next to me (already parked) flung his door open, right into my door, while I was still moving. Scraped down the side of my car before I realized what happened. Surprised it didn't do worse - like crumple his door when it hit the (LOL GM SIZED) gap between my doors.

I stopped, got out, dude just started walking off. Said "WTF man?", he just shrugged and kept walking into Barnes & Noble. Such a nice guy.

Found some paint transfer from his (pretty new loaded Silverado) onto my car, but I was able to remove it with just a cloth and WD40 in a couple of minutes right there. The edge of his door is missing a bit of paint. At least got pics of his license plate, truck, and the damage to his truck, but there was no real damage to my car (plastic body panels strike again). Since he walked off and didn't seem to give two shits about his ~2017 Silverado LTZ, and my damage was just paint transfer that came off easily, I'm just gonna forget it happened (still pissed about it, took pics just in case he claims I hit him and took off, but he didn't even stop to look at his own truck).

Plastic body panels win again, I guess.

Also your insurance is likely to be even more fuckoff expensive since you let it lapse. Insurance companies don't like that, even if you're switching insurance companies. So uh there's that...

Usually a good installer will leave a long run of extra cable in the wall when he does an install so that if john q fucknut drives a nail through the wall and damages the cable (or a rat eats it or whatever), they can just pull the cable out and crimp a new fitting on the end of the line. This saves them having to try running a new drop down the wall which is a pain in the dick at the best of times or running it along a wall which most property owners object to doing. Any house my dad did an install in has probably 5ft of spare wire in the wall for every outlet that he hooked up. Probably part of where my whole "plan for future fuckups" thing comes from.

Yeah, I figured it was excess left by the last installer. Tech did say the place has definitely been rewired, as outside they have the old style A/B cable (dual cable lines from before digital cable was a thing), but inside the wall is much newer single line cable. I still have 2 jacks side by side, but he's pretty insistent that there's no connection between the old "B" line and that jack (there is a cable running to it though, and it's not from the FiOS box... that jack is across the room, behind the couch). There's also a bigass conduit running from the pedestal to the attic.

But he also said there was never A/B cable in this town... so why would the pedestal have the dual (attached) cables leading into every unit?

I have an idea.. he left the pedestal wide open anyway. I'm going to try the 3 jacks :laffo: in the bedroom and see if I have a better signal (or any signal at all) in there. Going to try hooking up the other line and trying the other jacks. I only have 6 cable jacks in the drat place anyway, and the one the modem is currently on is physically the farthest from the pedestal. :v:

The dual wire setup was from well before they made the switch to digital. Like from when that apartment complex was put into place. It was something the company who provided the cable service in the 80s set up to combat some goofy problem. I'd have to ask my dad for the details since he was contracted to that company at the time and actually know about the system. Its lovely, dumb and now causes more problems than it solves.

Also, if you have the kind of wall box where the front panel slides down, they should have a flange at the top that can be pried up to gain access. Hell, shoot me a pic of the wall box or pedestal anywhere in the dfw metro area and I can tell you how to get into it with hand tools in about 2 minutes. :v:

Oh this one can (now) be opened with a screwdriver. :v: The lock is long clogged with 30+ years of paint. I just don't feel like loving with it in full view of the street at 1am.

And yeah, when I first moved here (here being DFW), A/B was still very much a thing, I think TCI CableVision was the main provider on the Dallas side. The apartments I'm in were originally owner-occupied condos, so I doubt there was any goofy on-site cable system like what I've run into at other apartments I've lived at. The tech who was out here said it was a bog standard setup, with TWC/Spectrum owning the amps and everything inside of the wall box.

Once TCI left, I think Time Warner came in, then Comcast, then back to Time Warner. I think the Ft Worth side has been on Charter for a long time, but I've never lived in Tarrant county (Charter also had Denton though, which I did live in). But both Comcast and Time Warner kept the A/B system alive for a lot longer than they should have - I think they finally killed it off about 10 years ago.

My parents house was built in late 1994, and has the A/B lines. Rodents chewed up one of them after A/B got killed off, so I just moved them to the other line (and they still have the 2 coax wall jacks). Then the other line got chewed up, so I had to pull new wire through the attic to the main splitter (in the summer....). I spliced it into the wire right when it came into the attic, it's been fine ever since.

Your dad might know about my specific area though. It was.... special. I'm in Garland, but not on GP&L for my power (Oncor instead), for example. I'll shoot you a PM with details about my area, it was all 1 developer, and he wound up bankrupting a bunch of S&Ls.

In case you didn't catch my edit, gonna move it to this post:

e: welp I guess maintenance saw it hanging open (cable guy left it like that since he thought he was coming back the next day), they ran wood screws through the (very metal) cover. But I did confirm that out of 6 cable jacks, only 1 has any kind of signal that the modem picks up on.. and oddly enough, after I took the wall plate off of each of them and yanked on the cable in the wall... the signal quality is a shitload better. It's still crap (tons of errors and a few channels won't sync), but I'm back to low pings and decent speeds, and it synced immediately. I found a splitter behind one of them, but the modem didn't see anything when plugged into that jack (and that wire looked original to the building... mud and paint splatter on it). I guess the cables are all physically attached somehow in the attic, and pulling on them maybe jostled the damaged one enough to start working somewhat? Downstream power levels are all +/- 3dB now, instead of -9 to -12. SnR just sucks on a few channels.

I doubt there's a vacant place in the assembly line labeled "'ol Musky" causing them to miss production targets, there pretty much nothing he can personally do to improve line productivity, in fact his very presence pretty much guarantees worse performance as everyone spends effort and time making things look good or busy or preparing pretty presentations to show how much work they're doing.

Next week will be the first time I've worked over 25ish hours a week in a couple of months. :feelsgood: Amazon made it so goddamn impossible to get hours that most everyone I know has given up on them.

Have 46 hours scheduled with a major national food delivery company that I've worked with before, plus the laughable 2 hours Amazon offered me (I'm really tempted to throw away that Amazon shift though). Been averaging ~$20/hr with the new/old gig, but was still fighting for hours with Amazon (and doing Uber Eats a bit) because their pay schedule worked better until I started getting paychecks. Thursday I hit $30/hr :stare: but last night was only $14/hr :sigh: (mostly because of traffic.. it was taking 30 minutes to get each loving order dropped off). Far less miles than Amazon (~100 a day instead of 200-300), but my mileage goes to poo poo since it's 100% city driving. And my left knee is getting real pissy about the clutch. The obvious downside at the moment is my taxes will go up, since I won't be able to write off nearly as many miles.

As much as I hate to say it, I think I'm going to the dark side for my next car and going with an automatic.

Only complaints about the 6P are the battery life and the screen burn-in, but I have 4+ hours of screen on time a day. I don't dare leave home without a charger of some kind.

Somehow my work phone (2014 Moto X) still has pretty great battery life, despite similar usage (more screen time actually, up to 10 hours a day - the screen is FUKT from burn in.. love AMOLED for the brightness, hate it for the burn in). It's starting to freeze occasionally though. I may go ahead and wipe it today or tomorrow. All it has are work apps, so it won't take long to set it back up. I hope I don't have to replace it anytime soon, it's still reasonably quick and owes me absolutely nothing. With that kind of screen on time I still have to keep a charger with me, but if I leave it just sitting idle on my desk with a full charge, it'll run for nearly 3 days. The Nexus won't make it 24 hours (also sitting idle).

ServPro is gonna set up dehumidifiers and fans. They'll be a lot more effective than just heaters - the dehumidifiers are basically portable ac units without an exhaust hose. Probably about as damaging on your electric bill as the heaters. They'll probably want to pull up carpet in neighboring rooms to make sure nothing seeped in, might want to open up drywall too (unlikely though).

I guess I got lucky and caught it early enough. Guy came out, took a bunch of moisture readings then said it probably wasn't worth my 1k deductible to have them do the work since it would barely be 1k worth of work. Drywall measured dry, vinyl floors are fine and measuring from below the subfloor didn't even get to what they call saturated. He helped me rig up some tarps and plastic sheet in the basement, told me what to watch for and went on his way. I'll have to pull up a couple 'planks' in the hall just outside of the door but otherwise it's just dehumidifiers and heaters. Even showed me measuring moisture content with my multimeter compared to his fancy meter. Great guy and it looks like I got off very lucky.

After that fiasco I did end up getting around to replacing the thermostat in the Caddy which was the main thing I wanted to accomplish today other than some organization which now isn't possible. Previous owner, who pulled it out of a barn after sitting for years, replaced the radiator and hoses so I thought maybe the thermostat was hung or something. Nope, no thermostat at all. Easy fix but wtf after spending $70-100 on new radiator/hoses would you not buy a $5 thermostat.

Blech. Thanks to the long list of requirements from both parties, the only real option for the family Christmas tree is the same one we've been using for years. Except every year it has more dead bulbs and holy gently caress is it a nightmare trying to find the one dead bulb on a prelit tree.

As a bonus it was one of the larger twinkling bulbs this year, which I now have no more spares for. I also can't seem to find any online anywhere for the inevitable dead bulb next year.

So it turns out that this was all about the upcoming launch of the Falcon Heavy - a rocket that has a very good chance of an end in Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly, given it will be it's first launch - and it was a decision on the frivious cargo. You dont put real cargo on a first launch rocket.

How exactly is Musk goign to be remembered as a huckster again? SpaceX is going to try to launch a Mars capable rocket and has a amazing successful reusable rocket design already for vastly cheaper than anyone could have imagined, Tesla are supplying huge arrays of batteries (amazingly even on time now), Tesla have blazed the EV trail in ways no one thought could happen and redefined EV's
and yet because Tesla have hit the production hell that rapid expansion gives you esp in car making, he's a huckster?

Frankly he's only guilty of delivering late on his outragous promise timelines. But even then, those promises have been on things no one thought could happen years later and yet here we are, Tesla have even got a loving EV truck in the pipeline.

As for the fanbois...... whatever. At least they are fanboiiing a guy who is havign an absolute red hot go at fundamentally changing transport / power and space industries. I'd rather than than the fanbois who gag on the dead cock of a guy who showed off phones that featured nothing others had two years ago

My Nexus 5x took a swim yesterday, but amazingly everything was working fine so I thought I was golden. Plugged it in to charge and a few minutes letter I notice the unmistakable smell of melting plastic and wires. Apparently the part that tells the phone to stop taking power when the battery is full decided it didn't want to work. Managed to completely melt the USB cable, the back of the case and most of the board the cable connects too. gently caress.

Luckily the Moto x4 got released, decently priced and most importantly works with Google fi. Not super pumped about the phone, but I leave for Mexico early Monday morning and it was the only thing I could easily get my hands on in time. The only problem is Best buy didn't have any accessories for it and Amazon can't get me anything till Monday. Now I get to attempt to not destroy this phone while drinking on the beach for a week. On the plus side, I have already dropped it once and no damage!

SpaceX is already launching for way below the rate of anybody else. They have a huge backlog....because they're cheap and reliable. The next CRS mission will be on a re-use core...which isn't even possible for any other launcher and which already has 2? 3? re-use missions under their belt.

Ausland just got a massive battery array turned on, and the 3 started production on time. Slower production than expected, but still production. Car shows may as well be renamed BEV shows at this point. And the roadster 2.0 and the semi show just how much performance and capability range electrics have.

Do whatever you need to to stick some sort of protection over the glass. Sand is one of the few things which *will* scratch it.

Yeah, I need to call around to all the lovely cell phone accessory stores in town and see if they have anything for this phone. If not, gently caress it I'm on vacation and my phone can stay in my room. Traveling with family, so someone I am with will have a phone on them. Maybe not having my phone on me will actually keep me from checking my work email.
