Kid stuff like that is so hysterical. Coming in as an outsider, I can imagine how it's a little less than exciting. To me it's so cute watching the kids get jazzed up about being out late-ish (depending on time of train) in their PJs, getting hot cocoa and cookies, and then listening to the story. The only way you can "get in" up here is by volunteering 4 hours as an "elf" which is an experience in and of itself.

2017 started out as the worst time in my life. I took that poo poo, turned it around, lost a fuckton of weight and got engaged to a literal Disney Princess. 87 days til I get married and I've never been happier or healthier.

I'm visiting my wife's side of the family, for the first time ever, in her home town of São Paulo from mid-December until the 2nd week of January. I'm severely lacking in Portuguese, rhythm, and international travel experience so I know I'm in for a huge culture shock. Then, literally 2 days after I get back, I start community college at the youthful age of 33...I haven't ever had anxiety like I'm feeling now. But it's better than struggling to get out of bed every morning because I have no desire to do what I'm doing for the rest of my life despite having a decent job I could stay with until retirement.

Take what enjoyment you can from friends and life because unless you ditch all your friends for younger ones every year those people are just getting older.

in the last year i've had to bury my mother, mourn the loss of a pregnancy, and put the most beautiful dog i have ever seen down. I've had to live with a lovely president, watch nazis march the streets and gain seats in government across the US and Europe, be aware of the fact that north korea could start another world war, watch Russia wage "cyberwar" and meddle with the world's democratic functions, abandon friends because they're more mad about a black man standing against police brutality than a rapist being the president, and watch helplessly as corporate greed destroys the environment, economy, and the nation 2017 has been terrible for my mental health and for the world, and it's worse knowing that everything is only going to get worse if something drastic doesn't happen, and I'm concerned that the only measure drastic enough is a bloody civil war in conclusion,

I'm ambivalent about 2017 on a personal level. World-wide it's been subpar for sure but unless I don't get a decent raise this December it hasn't been all bad for me. If work turns around and says "thanks for literally saving the company multiple times this year, no raises" I'm going to riot though.

It hasn’t rained in 21 days here. I live in the wettest part of Nz where normally we get something like 6 metres of rain a year. Last summer we didn’t get 2 consecutive non-rain days. This is magical. It’s probably a record, especially for what was until today Spring. My lawn is brown, my garden needs watering 3 times a day and I spent most of yesterday afternoon half-asleep on the porch with a novel and gin&tonic. Also 2017 wasn’t so bad, I caught a lot of fish, shot some deer, took my landcruiser a bunch of places, got the first permanent job of my life at age 29 with a 12%ish pay bump to go with it, started rock climbing which I always meant to do but never got around to and haven’t died or got an incurable disease

I can look at 2017 in two ways: 1: The year I ended one bad relationship, went through a lot of trouble and heartache, only to move in with somebody who I thought was a long-term "one," but eventually just left my rear end after less than a year. I sold all of my fun cars, and have no money to show for it. 2: The year I separated myself from toxic people, started some online classes, greatly reduced my debt, and learned a lot about life. Neither one is all sunshine and rainbows. I want to say option 2, but throw in a good "gently caress 2017" about option 1. Also, politics chat aside, the world is a loving mess right now, and it's not just the 24-hour news cycle emphasizing "badness." I'm 30. I was prime learnin' age for 9/11, and the 24-hour news cycle that grew from that. This seems different.

The world is getting shittier and we are getting hosed over by things out of our control. This year I have also abandoned friends and i'm struggling with some family members. also the sweet little catte who lived 2 doors down from my house and who used to come round and visit me everyday and wait for me to get home so she could sit on my lap and drool on me and purr moved away with her real people last week I do however have a beer advent calendar, so the next 24 days are going to be slightly improved.

drat Nazi scum piss me off. My grandads didn't fight in WWII so you shitstains could infect the US. So I'm going to change the subject. If you're not aware of Skyrim, Dovahkiin, etc., you're not going to get this, but I have to share. I'm not talented enough to fully develop it like some of you nerds, so you get what I got. So, my wife is playing the new expansion that has "artifices" in it, mechanical beings. One of them is a hand-sized dragonfly, but of course in that world, it's a "Dovah-fly", because Dovah = dragon in elder Scrolls. That's reasonably clever for what amounts to set dressing, but for some reason, my mind took off. So Dovahkiin is dragonborne. Dovah-fly is a dragonfly... would a dragon's schlong be a Dovahpeen? And then: Dovahpeen! Dovahpeen! It's a humongous thing! DovahPeen! It's a ween Like you've never seen! Come along! Sing my song! 'Bout my schlong, it's so long! That's all I got, but it amused me. and I've been singing it to myself all day, despite it being so short.
