All of my years of theory-crafting and $5000 in contributions are based on being able to be a professional SPACE PLUMBER when people do inevitably clog their toilets. CIG better deliver well on this important profession!

I expect that there will be a backlog of grounded vessels at Port Olisar that are not cleared for takeoff due to clogged toilets. As a result, I will be able to bid up the price of my services to players so that they move up in the toilet service queue. After that players should realistically wait 2-3 hours while I work on making their ship flyable again. That's realistic. Also alien poo poo based clogs are automatically billed at 3x due to hazmat provisions.

My org - Stimpire Interplanetary Plumbing (SIP) already has 4000 active members and I expect to dominate the plumbing economy in the 'verse.

they need in-game plumbers because they also need to have in-game porn excuse plots

even little touches can save a bland scfi aesthetic

like all of the paper in bsg had the corners cut off. mixing in low-tech wired handsets, garbled comms, and firearms instead of frickin Lazer beams made it seem more real and relateable.

making the terrans in starcraft space rednecks was smart because otherwise they're super generic - boxy spacecraft, power armour, tanks, walkers, buildings that are just called "barracks" and "factory", etc. Giving terrans a broader cultural identity gave blizzard the chance to use humour and added to the sense that terrans were just average joes trapped in a conflict with horrifying and highly advanced enemies.

it does make sense to have ground forces in a sci-fi setting - orbiting ships can vaporise poo poo but you they can't take and occupy things like cities

but a tank that loving gigantic does not make sense. as soon as that building sized thing moves out of cover, it will get deleted by orbital fire support. Also it's too loving big to navigate city streets or go over bridges

since SC was announced, I have:

graduated with a professional degree,
worked in my field for more than six years,
lived in three states,
bought a car,
had a seven-year relationship,
lost two cats and a dog,
adopted a third cat,
overcome various health issues,
learned how to program,
learned how to bake, and
started actually writing.

but, to be fair, SC developers will soon implement an improved throwing mechanic

Question

Title. Side track a little, I've been wondering for some time now what ESRB rating CIG is aiming for with Star Citizen and SQ42. I think I've heard NPCs curse a few times here and there, but overall it seems to be leaning more towards rated T atm.

Anyways, with the introduction of force reactions and our characters getting blown back by blasts, shotguns, and all that jazz, it'd be cool to see body bits getting blown off too. Or seeing the bloody aftermath of players and NPCs failing to escape their ships before it explodes.

TLoU 2 handled gore amazingly imo, would be nice to get the same in SC/SQ42. Especially in SQ42 with Vanduul running around slaughtering people.

What do you guys think?

I am relatively new to this project, but it does seem to me that there is always some key technology blocking progress to whatever the next step is. That seems not to matter to most backers though, since the developers have no shortage of inflowing funds.

I do believe that based on Chris Roberts' statement of It is done when it is done (or some variation thereof), along with many missed projections, that this game is at least a decade or more from being published.

While I will still likely be alive by then, it is less likely I will have the mental faculties or hand-eye coordination to properly enjoy the game by then.

I hope to be wrong.

also it's probably to some extent generational. Until the past few decades, western scifi authors and media seemed to overwhelmingly draw from the anglo/american and general western cultural traditions. So in early star trek all the ships used the us naval prefix and were named after famous anglo-american ships (or at least sounded like they were): Enterprise, Constitution, Hood, Exeter, Reliant, etc. They continued the pattern set with planets in the solar system by naming planets, moons, etc after figures from the greco-roman pantheon.

modern scifi has gotten a bit better in at least recognizing other place names and cultures - rendezvous with rama, discovery's uss Shenzhou, halo 2 having fighting in once-pleasant new Mombasa, etc. Still a long way to go, but the trend is promising

It's almost as if croberts was stuck in the past and trying to make something that he thought was cool when he was a kid 🤔
