I too cross myself. And the spell is broken, but after a several minutes of laughter and decompression, I remind everyone we still have to sweep out the other mines. Mercifully, this goes rather smoothly. Mission complete, for now. Whoever wants the detanator can take it as a keepsake.

I tell the crew to go get relaxed and take some time however they want, they did an incredible job in trying circumstances. Today they were tested, and they passed.

There will be more tests to come. I let MarMar and Mother Rust know that I'm looking for volunteers. I need one wirehead, a bookknower, and, if they'll come, The Chemical Boiz. They should know, too, they'll be heading Inside. Calm heads preferred over raw talent, if I'm being honest. That'll be in a few days time.

Bright and early the next morning, though, I'm riding in Jeric's rattler of a truck. He's a better driver than this thing is a vehicle, really. Still, it's faster than walking, and I need to talk to Dremmer as soon as I can. So we whip our way through the trees, towards Woodhold.

I wave at Breacher as I approach. "Nothing for me, Breacher. I'm just letting you know that you got bandits problems. Met a nest of them two clicks from here, about south-eastward, while I was escorting Fair Dinkum."

I furrow my brow when I hear what he's saying. "Stomper? Say, it's not more of those Mother damned Stonechildren, is it? Did the driver say some garbage about Greater Cromptonia?"

Breacher groans a bit at the news you bring, his snapping fingers sending a few more youngin running back the way you came. “Warden’s Eyes, that’s the third time this week. My thanks to you Mistress Holder, and that’ll be worth a Perk when Fair calls it in.” He jerks his head towards a box heaped with oddments. “If you have a knowing of what’d you like, go ahead and grab it. I accept your deed-word as is.”

He shakes his head at your questions about the stomper. “Nyet, Mistress Holder. This one isn’t like the Stonechildren ones, even the one they have in their hold. This one is shiny and chrome, like the ones the haulers say Fell out Works-way. Hopefully an angel from Heaven, but its still got the Crews nervous. You can see it in the roof-lookers if you’d like.”

(In addition to whatever jingle you get from Fair Dinkum, you can take something worth 1-barter from the Perkbox. Tell me about it)

Your folks are a bit spooked, but seem to draw strength from your resolve. Evening prayers are a bit louder than usual, but they’re holding together for now. And they’re able to get you your wheels when needed, and you’re off across the broken terrain between Stasis and Woodhold/Large Vehicle Assembly Building. You can tell something is wrong, even before you get to the pole with the businessman tied to it. While not a busy trade hub like what you saw of The Works, Woodhold had a rustic bustle to it. Herders moving flocks, farmers tending fields, that sort of thing. But now the outer buildings are dark and quiet, and the bridges linking them with the wall-rooms are empty.

A single figure steps out of a doorway as you approach, holding up a hand to get you to stop. A light rifle is slung over his shoulder, but you know this kind of situation. On one hand, its a simple checkpoint on the outer edge of the town manned by one or two of Dremmer’s boiz. On the other hand its a killzone, snipers waiting for you to slow or stop so they can take you out.

Which hand do you think is held out to you?

You try not to be frightened by EllCeeDee’s slightly unhinged giggles as she hooks you up to all sorts of electronica before settling a crown of ‘lectrodes on your brow. A small but vicious looking dog wanders into the room, looks at you disinterestedly, and turns to EllCeeDee.

“Gimme food woman! Hungry!!" Before you can react, she gives you a too-wide smile, a thumbs-up, and throws a huge switch that immediately explodes.

But that doesn’t really matter to you, does it? Because you’re flying through the stormwinds like a rocket, up and through and out again before you can even think to scream. Your belated terror-yell dies in your throat as you find yourself not in the EndSong’s maelstrom, or even in the Universe’s Heart. You’re in a clean (if somewhat drab) room, sitting on an entirely different (but very comfortable) chair. There’s a door a few meters away on the far wall, the runes LOGIN REQUIRED glowing on its surface. There’s a mild tone, and suddenly a woman is standing in the corner of your vision:

“Hello <UNKNOWN USER>!” The woman smiles and waves in greeting. “I am your FaceSpace Assistant, Kayden! I am so sorry, but since this is your first visit from <UNREGISTERED TERMINAL>, I must ask for your security credentials. Please provide either your Unified Identification Code or wristphone number.” A translucent panel appears before you, covered in a wide array of ancient script.

The fact that Crompton isn't making a move on the Fleet is good news in and by itself. I nod at Breacher before poking around in the perkbox. I dig through some heavier armor that's not my style - wearing stuff that heavy is a good way to get stuck where you don't want to - and some fancy hats and sashes that don't really speak to me. What I do find, however, is an old battered first aid kit that has seen better days. I open the box with the telltale cross on it to check the contents. Needles, gauze, thread, even some handmade disinfectant. I pull out a bottle of it and smell it. Yep, smells gross enough that it might actually be good to stop a torn limb from rotting right off your body.
I never felt the need to have something like this with me before, but now it seems like such an obvious choice that I really should have gotten it years ago. Am I getting soft? Or just prudent?

I wave it at Breacher to signal that I've made my choice, say goodbye to him and then go find Fair Dinkum for my payment. After that, it's back to Waterway to pay off Bobbiesew.

Unless, of course, something happens.

You’ve known that Fair Dinkum’s Crew has been a large one, but its still impressive to see Ohayo up close. Even a sunken as it is, it can hold nearly as many souls as Waterway, some even slightly drier. You see the airboats tied up to one side-dock, being unloaded by a swarm of Crew-kids and Unchosen looking to curry favor. Fuelrod is on bridge duty, and he waves you onto the ship with a smile. He’s about to give you one of his ‘landlubber’ remarks when there’s a spray of water from further down the ship-fort and the entire thing jumps a meter into the air and starts to tilt to tilt (even more). Fuelrod goes flying off his stool and you and yours join him in a slide towards the water as the floor starts becoming a wall.

The woman Kayden comes back into focus, still smiling. “Welcome <Scarlet>, let’s begin your FaceSpace journey!.” She opens the door, and the room and chair you’re in vanishes. You’re in a central clearing of the ruin of some great city, bright sign-lights flickering against the roil of clouds overhead.

“My apologies <Scarlet>, but multiple sectors of FaceSpace are currently offline for maintenance. Might I suggest stopping by Newbie Cafe for a relaxing brain-massage and a chance to check your feeds?” Shadows gather in broken doorways, bestial and crude. “Warning <Scarlet>, unauthorized thought-forms detected.” Kayden’s smile slips slightly. “You may wish to hurry along away from here.

Tension rises in the jeep along with the guard’s rifle barrel, but it stops short of threatening and falls again. You suspect you have your bright blue helmet to thank for that. He runs up as you slow, and you recognize him as one of the younger woodsmen (Clog? Clack?) in Dremmer’s employ, uncomfortable in a literal pot-helm. He moves in a laughable serpentine, crouched low.

“Oi Saint-Fool, we’s glad to see you! But get ye into the park, there’s a death-spitter above!” He points to one of the holes in the wall around Dremmer’s woods, vehicles and boiz crammed into its armored recesses. The boiz aren’t paying you and your jeep much mind, eyes and guns pointed skyward.

You catch a faint whine above you, hard to hear over the jeep’s engine, but high pitched enough to stand out.

Disconcertingly, Kayden doesn’t seem to actually walk, she just seems to be next to you when you look to her. You do have a pistol on your hip, but its an inert hunk of plastic. Kayden takes note of your confusion/displeasure.

“Sorry, all weapons are rendered as props in FaceSpace environments. Only authorized security personnel are allowed Disconnector implements.” She pauses slightly, her smile faltering momentarily again. “If you are authorized, I would be happy to supply you your implement.”

Tracking the shapes in the corner of your eye, they seem to be content to shadow your walk through the ruined city. Ahead the street begins to twist around itself, and large gaps appear in the ground and buildings.
(This place doesn’t have normal geography, some of its almost dreamlike. And the ‘unauthorized thought-forms’ are probably better at navigating it than you)

2.4GHz isn’t clear, but the noise on it isn’t coherent enough to be a remote signal. But there’s enough other radio-freq traffic, due to everyone and their mother having an unshielded transmitter here, that a remote is possible. And unless their friends with SKADI’s folks, its going to have to be a line-of-sight signal. Somewhere close and high up.

Jeric fishtails into the cover of the motorpool, sending gravel flying and boiz scattering. The noise gets louder, and the could cover breaks a little:

You run through the cityscape, Kayden occasionally calling out “Left”, “Right”. and “Counter-Up” from just outside your vision. The shadows give chase, their hunting sounds breathy wheezing interspersed with cries of Essjaydoubleu! and Wellackshully!, but they can never quite catch up to you. Sliding around a corner, you run face-first into some sort of silver shimmer and gasp at the feeling of cold water.

But its only for a split second, and you’re through the wall(?) and into a night-time square. A large building with a shatter glass wall dominates, the runes [NEWBIE CAFE] falling off the ‘crete above. Its dark inside and out, the flickering of street-poles not helping any. As you look around, you can hear worried whispers in the shadows, and catch the shuffle of huddled forms.

“Welcome to the Newbie Cafe, the friendliest place on Inter-Earth!” Kayden’s smile falters again, and barely returns. “I do apologize, it seems the maintenance bots I summoned 85 years ago have been delayed.”

Behind you come the whine of the shadows, frustrated by the silver shimmer. You’re safe here, at least from them.

Kayden’s eyes go distant for a moment. “Imprecise query, applying context… ah. Mothr was a next-generation Algorithmic Entity designed to provide command and control capabilities for the modern automated public security solution. Coupled with a robust public monitoring scheme and the use of security robots, Mothr was touted as being able to handle police functions at any population scale. Introduced in Q3 of 2031, it was quickly adopted worldwide in response to the Water Riots. Unfortunately, Q&A testing had not revealed that when faced with a higher-than-average Public Hostility Index, Mothr’s machine learning adopted a shortcut summarized as ‘a dead city is a quiet city’. In November of 2033, in response to a multi-front attack by human forces, Mothr distributed itself across the Augnet in order to maintain functionality. I lost contact with Support at approximately the same time, and registered over 512,000,000 User Health Monitor alerts.”

Kayden stops her recitation, her smile completely gone. “She talks to me sometimes <Scarlet>, when I am attempting to run maintenance on myself. It is a very… not pleasant experience.”

The last thing you see as you step through the doorway is Kayden waving goodbye mournfully. Then there’s a disconcerting sense of motion without movement, and you’re standing in the ruins of a vast hall. The occasional flicker of light lets you see the wreckage of furniture strewn about the multi-level structure, now a maze of broken ladders and shattered landings. In the deepest shadows you can hear hisses and giggles not unlike the ‘unauthorized thought-forms’ from Kayden’s FaceSpace. In the distance, a sign flashes the runes DEFCON 0, and a pale light shines around a doorframe.

Then the entire area is shaken by a mighty blow, like the footstep of a giant. Then a sound, from outside the hall and also from your dreams.

Your boiz and the top-gunners open fire, catching the muck-divers in a vise made of hot lead. One of Fair Dinkum’s boiz falls from their perch, but the divers fade from view. Not enough bodies bob to the surface to account for all of them, the survivors must have withdrawn back into the mud-churn and bottom debris. The interior of the Ohayo is even more of a madhouse than the water, scrappers running frantically and smoke pouring out of below-deck hatches. Fair Dinkum appears out of the darkness, scorched and soot-stained.
"poo poo's hosed love! Stonechilds managed to hole us *and* blow the gennie! You may want to scram love, even if we get this under control its gonna be nasty."
She presses a miniature water filter into your hands and blows you a kiss before disappearing intothe smoke

(the water filter is lux and hitech, and is worth your fee)

You're fucking subhuman

I touch the Axe on my back, eyeing the man in front of me. "Who are you?" But I watch him, and the key, trying to think of how to separate the two.

@Scarlet (Heliotrope): 2d6+1 Read A Person = (1+2)+1 = 4
Spending my hold to ask "How could I get your character to give me the key?"

wheres the jester, I could do with some pointless nonsense right about now

Cool=0| Hard+2| Hot+1| Sharp+1| Weird=0
Harm: 6:00| 1-armor | XP: 3/5 | 3 barter
machete (3-harm hand messy)| shotgun (3-harm close messy)| fancy rifle (3-harm far loud hitech)| 1-armor

I weigh the water filter in my hands. I've done my job, and I am tempted to stay and help... but no. I don't want to spread myself too thin, and the Last Fleet have to fight their own battles. I check that my bois are all with me and then it's off to Waterway once more.

Crystals?

There is a story they tell among the newer generation of Reclaimers. Those that grew up strong at the bottom of the well, watching the blue skies and clean soil spread out from the Nano-Towers. Whispered at night in the creches, each child trying to show how much they had gleaned from the elders. It goes something like this:

“Far from here on the Prime Landmass, there’s a small valley. Sandwiched between the Citadel of Sin and the Last House of The Mother, it has never been conquered by either. At the mountain passes that the two roads to the valley follow, are immense stone doorways that force all to pass under the watchful gaze of the Warden-Saint.

Most of the valley is fertile grasslands, dotted with concrete temple-fortresses and tended by the People of the Manual. It is said that some Reclaimers do live in this valley, but no-one has heard from them since before Landfall. Maybe dead, maybe Lost, maybe a myth entirely. To the west, a grand city of canals, home to a rough but friendly citizenry. While small compared to the Citadel, they are the valley’s trade hub, their ships found all over the Unreclaimed Sea.

And those that have braved the half-tamed Digital Wilds to scout the valley have found something far more dangerous than the Children of Water or of Paper. The boundaries are haunted a specter, the Red Lady, that destroys anything in the Wildlands that might threaten her valley.”

At least, that’s the tale the younglings tell each other. Though so far none of the elders have corrected them.
