BAEST MODE!!!
It's December, that means voting is already open in the 2017 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards! The Observer year ends in November, while the PSP Awards run a normal calendar year. For the most part there's not much that can change, it's doubtful Clash of Champions or Final Battle will have a MOTY contender or shift another award. So here's the awards, first listing last year's winner and then previous winners. I'm just stealing content from Dave. The MMA Awards are excluded, but there are crossover awards.

Awards are based on taped dates. So Lucha Underground matches would not qualify, but the Lucha Underground show itself would as it was taped last year but aired this year.

"CATEGORY A" AWARDS - WINNERS

DETERMINED BY POINTS ON A 5-3-2 BASIS. (You get three votes)

FIRST PLACE VOTES IN PARENTHESIS

LOU THESZ/RIC FLAIR AWARD
This is the best overall wrestler, in terms of wrestling and drawing. The best, most important wrestler. The obvious front runner this year is Okada. WWE's is probably AJ Styles even though he spent half the year not really doing that much. CMLL has had such a weird year that I'm not sure who I'd go with, so Ultimo Guerrero is a safe choice.

Styles

MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER

The best wrestler. Okada is the front runner here as well, followed by arguments for Omega, Naito, KUSHIDA, Tanahashi, Ishii... I guess AJ is the easy answer for WWE but again, for half the year he didn't really stand out. Caristico has really wowed me this year with some great matches too.

1. A.J. STYLES (341) 2,436

BEST BOX OFFICE DRAW
1. CONOR MCGREGOR (1,005) 5,206

A dumb award for who drew the most money. I guess Conor wins again? Who cares. Micro Man should win.

FEUD OF THE YEAR
1. CONOR MCGREGOR VS. NATE DIAZ (677) 3,582

This goes to MMA a lot, but I imagine Okada vs Omega is the favorite this year. Roman Reigns vs Braun should probably get votes but maybe people hate Roman that much. Rush vs LA Park was hot again but they haven't done a lot since summer.

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR
1. YOUNG BUCKS (599) 3,801

The Usos should get a lot of support too. I need to bug Dave to see if Trios qualify. The real winners should be THE BIG GUNS.

PREVIOUS WINNERS: 1980 - Freebirds (Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts); 1981 - Terry Gordy & Jimmy Snuka; 1982 - Stan Hansen & Ole Anderson; 1983 - Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood; 1984 - Road Warriors; 1985 - British Bulldogs (Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith); 1986 - Midnight Express (Dennis Condrey & Bobby Eaton); 1987 - Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane); 1988 - Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane); 1989 - The Rockers (Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty); 1990 - Rick & Scott Steiner; 1991 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada; 1992 - Miracle Violence Combination (Steve Williams & Terry Gordy); 1993 - Hollywood Blondes (Brian Pillman & Steve Austin); 1994 - Los Gringos Locos (Love Machine Art Barr & Eddie Guerrero); 1995 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi; 1996 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama; 1997 - Mitsuharu Misawa & Jun Akiyama; 1998 - Shinjiro Otani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa; 1999 - Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama; 2000 - Edge & Christian; 2001 - TenKoji (Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima); 2002 - Eddie & Chavo Guerrero; 2003 - KENTA & Naomichi Marufuji; 2004 - KENTA & Naomichi Marufuji; 2005 - America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris & James Storm); 2006 - LAX (Homicide & Hernandez); 2007 - Mark & Jay Briscoe; 2008 - The Miz & John Morrison; 2009 - Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards; 2010 - Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli; 2011 - Giant Bernard (Tensai) & Karl Anderson; 2012 - Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian; 2013 - Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns; 2014 - Matt & Nick Jackson; 2015 - Matt & Nick Jackson

MOST IMPROVED
1. MATT RIDDLE (190) 1,026

My pick is Nick Gage. Since his return he has an it factor beyond what he had before. He really comes off as the baddest man on the planet and a legit psychopath.

PREVIOUS WINNERS: 1980 - Larry Zbyszko; 1981 - Adrian Adonis; 1982 - Jim Duggan; 1983 - Curt Hennig; 1984 - The Cobra (George Takano); 1985 - Steve Williams; 1986 - Rick Steiner; 1987 - Big Bubba Rogers (Ray Traylor); 1988 - Sting; 1989 - Lex Luger; 1990 - Kenta Kobashi; 1991 - Dustin Rhodes; 1992 - El Samurai; 1993 - Tracy Smothers; 1994 - Diesel (Kevin Nash); 1995 - Johnny B. BEST ON INTERVIEWS
1. CONOR MCGREGOR (627) 3,468

Maybe Owens? I dunno. This incorporates drawing so Conor would probably win again but I don't think he will.

PREVIOUS WINNERS: 1981 - Lou Albano and Roddy Piper (tied); 1982 - Roddy Piper; 1983 - Roddy Piper; 1984 - Jimmy Hart; 1985 - Jim Cornette; 1986 - Jim Cornette; 1987 - Jim Cornette; 1988 - Jim Cornette; 1989 - Terry Funk; 1990 - Arn Anderson; 1991 - Ric Flair; 1992 - Ric Flair; 1993 - Jim Cornette; 1994 - Ric Flair; 1995 - Cactus Jack (Mick Foley); 1996 - Steve Austin; 1997 - Steve Austin; 1998 - Steve Austin; 1999 - The Rock; 2000 - The Rock; 2001 - Steve Austin; 2002 - Kurt Angle; 2003 - Chris Jericho; 2004 - Mick Foley; 2005 - Eddie Guerrero; 2006 - Mick Foley; 2007 - John Cena; 2008 - Chris Jericho; 2009 - Chris Jericho; 2010 - Chael Sonnen; 2011 - C.M. Punk; 2012 - C.M. Punk; 2013 - Paul Heyman; 2014 - Paul Heyman; 2015 - Conor McGregor

MOST CHARISMATIC
1. CONOR MCGREGOR (381) 2,715

I'd go with Gage but I'm guessing Naito is the front runner? Braun should really get some votes too, his charisma hides some of his weaknesses.

PREVIOUS WINNERS: 1980 - Ric Flair; 1981 - Michael Hayes; 1982 - Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair (tied); 1983 - Ric Flair; 1984 - Ric Flair; 1985 - Hulk Hogan; 1986 - Hulk Hogan; 1987 - Hulk Hogan; 1988 - Sting; 1989 - Hulk Hogan; 1990 - Hulk Hogan; 1991 - Hulk Hogan; 1992 - Sting; 1993 - Ric Flair; 1994 - Atsushi Onita; 1995 - Shawn Michaels; 1996 - Shawn Michaels; 1997 - Steve Austin; 1998 - Steve Austin; 1999 - The Rock; 2000 - The Rock; 2001 - The Rock; 2002 - The Rock; 2003 - Bob Sapp; 2004 - Eddie Guerrero; 2005 - Eddie Guerrero; 2006 - John Cena; 2007 - John Cena; 2008 - John Cena; 2009 - John Cena; 2010 - John Cena; 2011 - The Rock; 2012 - The Rock; 2013 - Hiroshi Tanahashi; 2014 - Shinsuke Nakamura; 2015 - Shinsuke Nakamura

BRYAN DANIELSON AWARD
(BEST TECHNICAL WRESTLER)
1. ZACK SABRE JR. (453) 3,273

BRUISER BRODY MEMORIAL AWARD
(BEST BRAWLER)
1. TOMOHIRO ISHII (410) 3,044

Ishii probably deserves it again.

BEST FLYING WRESTLER
1. WILL OSPREAY (741) 4,467

WWE has a bunch of contenders as does NJPW and Mexico. Pretty wide open.

MOST OVERRATED
1. ROMAN REIGNS (242) 1,516

This is the "Most Overpushed" award, basically who a booker has an undeserved boner for. Jinder will win in a landslide. Diamante Azul deserves votes too.

PREVIOUS WINNERS: 1980 - Mr. Wrestling II (Johnny Walker); 1981 - Pedro Morales; 1982 - Pedro Morales; 1983 - Bob Backlund; 1984 - John Studd; 1985 - Hulk Hogan; 1986 - Hulk Hogan; 1987 - Dusty Rhodes; 1988 - Dusty Rhodes; 1989 - Ultimate Warrior; 1990 - Ultimate Warrior; 1991 - Ultimate Warrior; 1992 - Erik Watts; 1993 - Sid Vicious; 1994 - Hulk Hogan; 1995 - Hulk Hogan; 1996 - Hulk Hogan; 1997 - Hulk Hogan; 1998 - Hulk Hogan; 1999 - Kevin Nash; 2000 - Kevin Nash; 2001 - The Undertaker; 2002 - HHH; 2003 - HHH; 2004 - HHH; 2005 - Jeff Jarrett; 2006 - Batista; 2007 - Great Khali; 2008 - Vladimir Kozlov; 2009 - HHH; 2010 - Kane; 2011 - Crimson; 2012 - Ryback; 2013 - Randy Orton; 2014 - Kane; 2015 - Kane

MOST UNDERRATED
1. CESARO (217) 1,571

If everyone hasn't turned on Bayley I'm guessing she'd be the frontrunner. Basically it's the most underpushed wrestler, someone really good who doesn't get a fair chance.

PREVIOUS WINNERS: 1980 - Iron Sheik; 1981 - Buzz Sawyer; 1982 - Adrian Adonis; 1983 - Dynamite Kid; 1984 - Brian Blair; 1985 - Bobby Eaton; 1986 - Bobby Eaton; 1987 - Brad Armstrong; 1988 - Tiger Mask (Mitsuharu Misawa); 1989 - Dan Kroffat (Phil LaFon); 1990 - Bobby Eaton; 1991 - Terry Taylor; 1992 - Terry Taylor; 1993 - Bobby Eaton; 1994 - Brian Pillman; 1995 - Skip (Chris Candito); 1996 - Leif Cassidy (Al Snow); 1997 - Flash Funk (Too Cold Scorpio); 1998 - Chris Benoit; 1999 - Chris Jericho; 2000 - Chris Jericho; 2001 - Lance Storm; 2002 - Booker T; 2003 - Ultimo Dragon; 2004 - Paul London; 2005 - Shelton Benjamin; 2006 - Shelton Benjamin; 2007 - Shelton Benjamin; 2008 - MVP; 2009 - Evan Bourne; 2010 - Kaval (Low Ki); 2011 - Dolph Ziggler; 2012 - Tyson Kidd; 2013- Antonio Cesaro; 2014 - Cesaro; 2015 - Cesaro

BEST WEEKLY TV SHOW
1. NEW JAPAN WORLD PRO WRESTLING (198) 2,070

PRO WRESTLING MATCH OF THE YEAR
1. HIROSHI TANAHASHI VS. KAZUCHIKA OKADA 1/4 TOKYO (363)
2,568

Pretty self explanatory, unless NJPW splits the vote an Omega/Okada match is the favorite. If it does maybe a WWE match like the Summerslam main event or the UK Title match from that Takeover sneak in.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This is a pretty weak year for rookies. I believe the rule is starting your full time career no earlier than September of the previous year. Vote for MICRO MAN! He debuted this year on Kid's Day in Mexico and they sold out. He had the most hyped match on the card and it was really fun.

Jinder will and should win Most Overrated in a landslide but I think there's a good argument to Shane McMahon at least taking 2nd.

So is this just pre-voting discussion?

Patrick Clark/Velveteen Dream is a really obvious vote for Most Improved, but I'll admit that I'm really only drawing on one ~two month feud for that. I assume Most Improved is specifically about working and not booking, otherwise I'd say Cien could be a contender.

Here's a ballot if anyone wants to use it to plan their votes (though I assume instead of posting your filled out ballot here, you should wait for votes to open!):

Becky Lynch should be up there for most underrated, she's been the best women's worker on Smackdown since the brand split and has been given fuckall to do this year.

I'll post my votes here whenever I get around to sorting it out.

Okada is a lock for Wrestler of the Year and most Outstanding Wrestler for me - it feels unfair to Omega but, welp, Okada is literally the greatest wrestler going right now

Thanks for setting this up MRT :)

I'm pretty set on Okada as wrestler of the year. I'm split on most improved as while Braun still has weaknesses he has improved a lot this year. I'll probably put Evil on the ballot too just cause EVIL. Naito is probably my vote for most charismatic.

Tag Team of the year feels like it should not be the Bucks as they haven't had a bad year but New Japan/ROH tag's have been just there. Uso's maybe, though I probably should watch more Penta/Fenix tags.

Worst gimmick has to be Bray. Hands down

I thought this was OK in years past? At least for the WON Awards, not the thing we do on this forum (which I know has always been closed-ballot).

MRT can clarify, I thought this WAS the (discussion thread for) awards for this forum, just - as in the past - making use of the WON ballot for ease of use, and then at some later point he'll put up an e-mail link to send the completed ballots to?

Patrick Clark/Velveteen Dream is a really obvious vote for Most Improved, but I'll admit that I'm really only drawing on one ~two month feud for that. I assume Most Improved is specifically about working and not booking, otherwise I'd say Cien could be a contender.

Here's a ballot if anyone wants to use it to plan their votes (though I assume instead of posting your filled out ballot here, you should wait for votes to open!):

No this is the official vote if you post anyone's name in here Dave counts it as a vote.

Just discuss stuff here, if there are official PSP awards someone will make a thread. Post your ballot, do whatever have fun.

There's a couple Puebla openers and a few things from Triplemania but my vote would be for the Aerial Assault from CZW's Once in a Lifetime. Just an absolute hilarious trainwreck of a match with a botched finish.

I'm leaning towards Sexy Star AAA match for worst of the year cause it was bad and also due to Sexy Star being unprofessional

I've never heard a qualification on it. Some stuff like the TNA Reverse Battle Royal was mainly on the booking of the match being atrocious and making it possible to work something resembling a match.

I've always taken it as more of a "total package" thing rather than strictly Worst Worked (it hasn't been called that in a while)

If we're only going by workrate then random dirt fed matches would win every year. You need something a little extra to push it over the top as Worst Match of the Year (such as, say, killing Bayley's career in one fell swoop).

Pagano vs Mesias and Sexy Star vs Lady Shani vs Hamada vs Rosemary from Triplemania are the matches. I wouldn't nominate her for disgusting tactic based on LU, but based on AAA booking her knowing her reputation and her shoot armbarring Rosemary during the match (with the Jarretts then trying to play it up on social media for heat before getting fired.)

Holy poo poo, does she regularly shoot on people, then?

Also, didn't Jeff Jarrett show up to a show drunk and just kind of walk around the crowd when his match was happening?

No, but some company that books her now apparently has fake shoot segments in her matches trying to capitalize on it.

TNA had a tag team called the Johnsons which were managed by Mortimer Plumbtree, a generic nancy boy type manager. The idea was they bullied him in college so as revenge he dressed them up as dicks and made them wrestle. They were on the first couple TNA shows and then the idea was dropped.

Edit: That wasn't even TNA's worst gimmick of 2002, the Rainbow Express was much worse.

Yeah I’d go with this as well.

Braun should win Most Improved fairly easily but Velveteen Dream should have a respectable showing.

The most disgusting promotional tactic choice is tricky. The Warrior thing is a really good contender but TNA using Del Rio’s issues as an angle could win too.

STOP DOING HEROIN
Well, if it's kosher, here's what I'm figuring out with WON stuff. Not my official ballot yet, just a feeling-out process at this point.

Big disclaimer is that lucha was almost a total blind spot for me this year, so hopefully MRT doesn't get mad at snubs. I know CMLL had an eventful year, just haven't had the time to really take it in.

A Categories (I'll do B later this week)

LOU THESZ/RIC FLAIR AWARD

1) Kazuchika Okada
2) Kenny Omega
3) Tetsuya Naito

Honorable mentions: Hiromu Takahashi, KUSHIDA, AJ Styles

Obvious frontrunner is obvious, with Kenny and Naito fighting for second place. You can make great arguments for either one. I hope Hiromu and KUSHIDA get more love for reviving the junior heavyweight division. AJ was stuck in midcard dross for most of the year, which hurts his case.

MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER

1) Kazuchika Okada
2) Tetsuya Naito
3) KUSHIDA

Honorable mentions: Tomohiro Ishii, Kenny Omega, AJ Styles, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hiromu Takahashi, Dragon Lee, Pete Dunne

Once again, obvious No. 1 choice. KUSHIDA belongs on the list after probably the best year of his career. So does Ishii, but man it's a stacked category this year.

BEST BOX OFFICE DRAW

1) Conor McGregor
2) Kazuchika Okada
3) Goldberg

Eh, I'm cold on this. Conor will win by default, but don't overlook Goldberg being one of the few WWE guys to noticeably move the needle.

FEUD OF THE YEAR

1) Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega
2) Tetsuya Naito vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
3) Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman

Honorable mentions: Hiromu Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA, The Usos vs. The New Day, Pete Dunne vs. Tyler Bate, Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho

Okada/Omega transcended promotions and fandoms like no other feud I've seen in recent memory. You could maybe argue about how much actual story is involved, but make no mistake -- people talked about it all year, and will continue talking about it long after the final blowoff, whenever that comes. As "Feud of the Year" material goes, that's hard to top. Which is almost unfair to Naito/Tanahashi, because they'd win in a walk in any other year. Just incredible emotion and anger going back years, all culminating in an amazing match at Dominion. Flawless stuff, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if it wins.

Everything else is a solid choice. Roman/Braun did a lot to legitimize Braun, Dunne/Bate is always great, and let's not forget Owens/Jericho with Festival of Friendship being an instant classic.

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR

1) The Young Bucks
2) The Usos
3) Lucha Brothers (Fenix & Penta El 0M)

Honorable mentions: War Machine, The New Day, #DIY, The Bar (Sheamus & Cesaro), The Shield (Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins), The Authors of Pain, Sanity

Kind of a tossup in my book. Bucks had the good/great matches we always expect, and took their viral marketing to a new level, making themselves probably the biggest draw on the indies. The Usos reinvented themselves and had the best WWE tag matches in a walk. I can go either way there. Fenix and Penta need more love. Dean and Seth got the band back together after their singles careers stalled, leading to a good second-half run.

MOST IMPROVED

1) Braun Strowman
2) EVIL
3) The Velveteen Dream

Honorable mentions: Juice Robinson, The Authors of Pain, Lars Sullivan, Peyton Royce

Sadly, I'm not up with the Young Lions enough to follow the most improved there. Either way, this has to be Braun. He still has his limitations, but made big leaps in ring psychology and playing to his own strengths (figuratively and literally), having some of the most memorable WWE moments of the year. EVIL became the breakout star of Naito's LIJ cronies, earning a KOPW main event with Okada and really owning his cheesy gimmick after a kinda awkward start. Likewise, Dream took an iffy gimmick and made it his own, with an incredible performance against Aleister Black that hopefully leads to bigger things in 2018.

BEST ON INTERVIEWS

1) Conor McGregor
2) Kenny Omega
3) Kevin Owens

Honorable mentions: The Miz, John Cena

... yeah, not a strong category this year. I'll give the nod to Conor because he's still the best at talking people into a building, even for a vanity boxing fight he won't win. Kenny tends to fall into formula, but remains a compelling presence. Owens, Miz, and Cena do the best they can with WWE's hokey scripted material.

MOST CHARISMATIC

1) Tetsuya Naito
2) Hiromu Takahashi
3) Kenny Omega

Honorable mentions: Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe, Asuka, Shinsuke Nakamura

This category is wide open with Nak's stock crashing. Hiromu really needs to be up there, but I can't put him over Naito, who commands attention every time he's on screen. MRT made a good point about Braun's charisma doing a lot to hide his weaknesses, so he should be up there too.

BRYAN DANIELSON AWARD (BEST TECHNICAL WRESTLER)

1) KUSHIDA
2) Pete Dunne
3) Tyler Bate

Honorable mentions: Zack Sabre Jr., Aleister Black, Marty Scurll, Johnny Gargano

Wanna give some love to the UK guys not named ZSJ. And give this award to the actual best technical wrestler who doesn't need to do flashy mat work to qualify as "technical." Long live KUSHIDA.

BRUISER BRODY MEMORIAL AWARD (BEST BRAWLER)

1) Tomohiro Ishii
2) Braun Strowman
3) Sami Callihan/Jeremiah Crane

Honorable mentions: Samoa Joe, Kevin Owens, Nikki Cross

No contest, IMO. And shout-out to Nikki for being the best at WWE's version of a "female brawler."

BEST FLYING WRESTLER

1) Will Ospreay
2) Ricochet/Prince Puma
3) Io Shirai

Honorable mentions: Gran Metalik, Dragon Lee

Probably Will's year again, but I wanna give some love to Io, who is still doing great work even after the weird "will she/won't she" thing with WWE.

MOST OVERRATED

1) Jinder Mahal
2) Shane McMahon
3) Bray Wyatt

Honorable mentions: Randy Orton, Alexa Bliss, Bobby Roode, Sexy Star

Jinder will and should win, but I'll stump hard for Shane at No. 2. loving HHH would blush at Shane's Mary Sue booking this year. The other choices are self-explanatory, and if people wanna fight me on Alexa, name the last time Alexa had a hot feud as Raw champ. I'll wait.

MOST UNDERRATED

1) Becky Lynch
2) Gran Metalik
3) Luke Harper

Honorable mentions: Cedric Alexander, Bayley, Juice Robinson, Kassius Ohno

A lot of the 205 Live crew will get votes here, and deservedly so. But for my money, the biggest waste is Becky. Clearly the best women's worker on Smackdown, improved her promo abilities a lot, tons of babyface charisma, and great looks after all that. Pretty much the total package to be one of the company's biggest female stars. Instead, she dropped the title to Alexa last December, and did ... nothing. Like, at all. She invented a Twitter feud with Cris Cyborg over the summer because she had nothing else to do. This is criminal. I'm stumping for Becky at No. 1.

Everyone else is fair game. While Ohno has settled in as a player/coach gatekeeper in NXT, it's kind of a bummer that we might not see Prime Chris Hero again.

This post got long enough, so I'm skipping categories and will get to the rest later, but that's what I got so far. What are y'alls picks?

Yeah, I might actually be underselling him, because he completely owns every segment he's in and you can't take your eyes off him. Dude's been total money on the main roster, even with the injury kinda derailing his momentum.

While Okada/Omega and Naito/Tanahashi are easy one and two for feud of the year, for those not into Reigns/Strowman I think there's a really good argument to be made for New Day/Usos. While the ending to the first match was meh, it went along into some of the best matches WWE has done all year, ending in that amazing hell in a cell match

I have absolutely no problem with people not voting for CMLL in most categories even if they watch it. They had a great year but didn't have that one real emotional climax that would give them a shot at MOTY, didn't really push their biggest and best for their biggest matches and so the stand out performances were kind of mixed in between half a dozen guys.

I do think Micro Man is a very legitimate candidate for Rookie of the Year, Diamante Azul vs Pierroth is a candidate for Worst Feud and Soberano Jr is in the running for most improved.
