You can't get them to stop, and even if you could your idea is stupid and would never work.

You're asking a capitalist marketplace to willingly limit what are essentially skinner boxes and slot machines which make them a buttfucking ton of easy money for fairly little effort. What means of enforcement could possibly exist to limit the draw of such lucrative business?

non apple app stores are super garbage and are hosed by bots and malware who game results already. not that the App Store is “good” and completely free of this, just the alternatives like Microsoft (the absolute worst) and google are so filled with poo poo it’s offensive, they would be completely ineffective to do anything.

maybe just support developers who make good poo poo and pay no mind to games that make you mad op?

This is legit. Sin tax on microtransactions.

Also require them to show lootbox odds.

No tax: I spend $x to make a game with little upkeep required and make millions
Tax: I spend $x to make a game with little upkeep required and make millions, just not as much

If it is profitable to do, people will do it. And the barrier for entry here is very small, it's basically can you make a flash game.

It doesn't though - like say right now there is 0 tax. You spend $5, I get $5.

If you do a 90% tax, I'm still getting $0.50 so why not? The name of the game is volume anyway.

You underestimate how damaging a high tax on certain products can be. A tax would effectively push out a significant chunk of freemium game's target audience - minors with no income.

EDIT: The posters talking about removing "currencies" outright and forcing purchases to be shown in USD, alongside displaying odds, also make a great argument.

Im sure trump and the republicans are totally willing to tax these companies on your behalf for the sin of making too much profit. To be fair though thats far more realistic than gamers weening themselves off the addiction.

idea : buying random lootboxes puts you on a list of people, of which a certain number (that we can raise or lower depending on the results intended) are executed on live TV every year. Let's see how much you enjoy playing your luck then...

that or just making any game with gambling in it be restricted to adults, with an extra sin tax on gambling added for good measure.

You assume it would result in a price increase instead of companies just cutting their profit margins to still capture that audience.

I mean, you're right but the thing about this product is that you don't need to produce it in a factory and then ship it somewhere you just put it on a server and fix some bugs and let it ride. Farmville cost like, $300k to make. As long as it remains profitable to do something people will do it, even at razor margins, and the margins on these things can get pretty drat razor before you're not able to operate anymore.

I mean whatever tax it I'm just saying if the point is to eliminate the behavior just do that instead of trying a tax end run around it idk.

And there is nothing incorrect about your statement; nonetheless, slashing the profit margins that companies make from Freemium games will make it significantly less attractive for those companies to continue developing them, and your shittier, store-spamming applications may find the loss in profit too much altogether (actual profit made vs. maintaining a living application and development team costs, reduced treasury for future content, etc.)

It's no silver bullet, but it would put them in a world of hurt.

EDIT: If we're going by "eliminate the disease," that would require looking at the human problem of gambling addiction, which honestly I'm not very well educated on.
