We obviously don't have Australian magpies in Europe, and our actual magpies sound like an angry cheesegrater, but we do have Common Blackbirds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmpEWlmgRxQ There was one hanging around in the trees right outside my window earlier in the summer/spring, and they sound even more delightful live than on this video. There's this odd quality to their song where they seem to have more reverb than any other sounds in the environment, and an almost otherworldly clarity. And it's absolutely not a quiet song you have to struggle to listen to, it really stands out, especially as they usually sing at night when most everything else is quiet.

Goldfinches are like a very shy, retiring person who has been forced by peculiar circumstances into dressing like a clown. They always look a little embarrassed by their flamboyance I love wren song - it's as sweet as a blackbirds, but much simpler, and incredibly LOUD for such a tiny bird. We were out doing in the woods last weekend and met a whole family of wren fledglings sitting all truculent on the edge of the footpath. Their poor mother was roaring at them to come into the hedge but the babbies just glared angrily at us until we went away

Carthag Tuek posted:yaaay puffins Probably smart. Puffin also matches the photographer’s gear. Edit: yeah, there are gulls that prey on puffins, according to a quick google search. So that’s a smart puffin. Although they are more likely to hang out and watch for puffins returning home with a beak full of fish, jumping them, then stealing the puffin’s fish. They have inward sloping ridges on their beaks so they can keep shoving more fish into their mouths. It's... e-fish-ient.

Puffins shed the colourful part of their beaks when not in breeding season because birds are gonna be weird like that.

So the colorful part of the beak is to signal how much fish they can cram in their faces to potential mates?
