Goldcrests don't really seem to see us at all, they are totally oblivious to humans. Funnily enough, I also saw a redwing, which is very unusual in these parts. Also saw a big fluffy buzzard and a lot of ravens honking

I'd love to see a vulture in the wild I think the most exciting wild bird sighting I've had here in Ireland was back in 2010, (we had a very prolonged stretch of extremely cold weather in december 2010/january 2011), so a big flock of waxwings arrived from Scandinavia to escape the even worse conditions there Pictured: 1 waxwing

Waxwings subsist almost entirely on berries, which are high in sugar content. To better metabolize it they have an enlargened liver. It also helps when they gorge themselves on fermented berries. In short, waxwings can hold their liquor.

A former biology prof of mine, whose area of expertise was tits and chickadees, said once that the reason small birds are so widely studied is that it's easy as hell to observe them since they broadly do not care about humans in their space. They know we're not a threat, so they mostly ignore us, and you can watch them pretty closely without stressing them out. Black capped chickadees are ubiquitous here, but I have a new appreciation for them these days. We don't have vultures, so the birds picking at roadkill on the highway are crows, ravens, and the occasional bald eagle.

I’m pretty sure any time a car is approaching weekend they are having family dinner, someone yells in black vulture, “Car!!!!” So they can all flap up to a tree until the car passes. I wanna make friends with one of the black vultures. They’re nice birds. This is not an invitation to link videos about black vultures eating live cows. Those results did not come up last time I search for info about black vultures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYnoTvq0nBU Bored has a new favorite as of 19:54 on Jan 7, 2022 |

There’s a whole field of study of “flight initiation distance” where people just walk toward birds and record when they fly. The biggest determinant is the body size of the bird, since the small birds can accelerate so quickly and are maneuverable. Also smaller birds are usually living at higher density so if you need 20 or 30 replicates you can get them in one study site. Tits are especially good since they take to feeders readily and use nest boxes so it’s super easy to watch and band them.

A blue tit got into our house a few years ago and it was hilarious how it switched between rage/fear that I was gently chasing it with a brush to get it outside, and extreme curiosity every time it found something to play with. It found a cigarette butt high up on a wardrobe (yeah, I know???), and stayed to play with it for at least 5 minutes. They are very brave and very curious teeny birds.

There's been some PSAs around lately that the proper way to walk on ice is "like a penguin": small steps, waddling so you put as much of your weight over your foot as you put it down, arms slightly outstretched like flippers. It's a pretty good description of good ice walking, and it's cute, but it's not foolproof, and it ignores the fact that penguins can be their own toboggan when they fall over and I can't, I just get bruised knees.

Work on having denser belly blubber and commit to landing on your stomach rather than knees as you fall forward. You can also travel faster while sliding on your belly now if the ice allows for it.

Adelie (sp?) penguins? They are rad. The clip with all of the emperor penguin teenagers being managed by an albatross where a tiny penguin of a different species runs over to kick some albatrAss? Adelie penguin. Tiny but fierce. I don’t have time to look up stuff right now.

I recall reading somewhere that many Antarctic researchers consider Adelies to be one of the best things about living in Antarctica. They're fearless, inquisitive, and very playful, and they'll usually come check out what you're doing while you're setting something up on the ice. Endlessly entertaining.
