It seems that the common firecrest has started to nest in coastal Finland: I have already renamed it... the Goku Birb.

barbecue at the folks posted:It seems that the common firecrest has started to nest in coastal Finland: Last winter, we though we'd maybe seen a firecrest here in Ireland, but it turned out to almost certainly be a goldcrest with an exceptionally fierce crest. They are both just the best teeny tiny feisty birbs Such sweet thin little voices.

I was feeding a couple last year and they'd just walk right into my house and sing for food. What's weird is how there's like 12 of them together getting along so well. Magpies are assholes to other birds, especially other magpies, and especially their babies from last year that aren't quite out on their own yet. E: Found a video of them. https://i.imgur.com/mg4ssgf.mp4 Funky See Funky Do has a new favorite as of 14:01 on Jul 12, 2020 |

I made a little platform bird feeder for our tree out back and filled it with safflower seeds. We've got red headed finches and cardinals that come and crack open some and leave, but the last couple days the thing is just empty after less than 24 hours. I was sitting out there yesterday and saw some mourning doves land on it and watched them eat. They just swallow the whole seed one after another rapidly and will sit there for 5-10 minutes eating non-stop, so mystery solved.

RoboRodent posted:Why do Australian magpies sound so weird Australian magpies aren't actually magpies, they just look like them so the Europeans called them magpies when they got here. Eurasian magpies are corvids, Australian magpies are artamidaes and they're not related. Australian magpies are Australia's best songbird and they have a complex array of vocalisations. Pairs sing to each other and the sound of magpie song is Australia's defining sound. Well, that or the screech of parrots but magpies are nicer to listen to. I live in the Blue Mountains. I hear them (you can sort of tell because they tend to switch between birds they're mimicking) but I've just never been able to spot one amidst the undergrowth.

gently caress lorikeets so much. I used to live in inner west Sydney and the flocks of them would get so big that the sound in evenings when they'd congregate was deafening. Like permanent hearing damage loud.

But I did try, and I'm sorry to say that recording them just made them look at me because clearly what I was doing was more interesting than the bird noises on TV. One's a real fan, though. Ozzy lost interest after a bit but Sera could not get enough.
