RandomPauI posted:Can anything be done? I don't know, really. If I could catch him I could take him to an animal sanctuary but I imagine they'd just euthanize him (not that such an action wouldn't be more preferable for him than like, being chomped on by a fox or something), however, he's completely mobile still and I doubt I'd be able to safely catch him accordingly. Normal flight and hopping/walking still. Normal socializing with the other Grackles. I think I'm more bothered by it than he is at this point. How 'bout some Rose-Breasted Grosbeak?

Hooded plovers are They nest on beaches exposed to Antarctic swells and winds. Neither of which you're tough enough to handle.

I picked up a bigass 2.8 300mm lens with a 2x teleconverter. The downsides are that it's huge and it's only manual focus. But man.

We got barn owls! We set up a nest box, and a couple owls moved in. They've laid 7 eggs so far. Years ago, my dad built a nest box because he saw kestrel falcons hanging around the house. They moved in and raised multiple generations. After a few years, barn owls kicked them out and raised a few generations. Later, bees moved in. He removed the nest box. This year, we bought a special made nest box for owls, and one for kestrels. We installed webcams. The owl nest box is in the prime location, with a good view over a hill. The kestrels didn't like the location of their nest box, although they hung around the owl nest box area for a few weeks. I think the eggs will hatch in 1-2 weeks or so. I'll keep the thread posted if there's interest.

I am impressed at this eclectus parrot and just how good it is at mimicking speech. You can even tell his owner has an Australian accent.

My mom named the owls Walter and Cordeila, after the founders of Knott's Berry Farm. Here are a couple pictures of Walter feeding Cordelia: From what I've read, the one with the lighter coloring on his face and neck is the male, and the one with browner coloring is female. Although it can be hard to tell them apart. I'm trying to dig up photos from when we only had one owl. I think the male was first, and he laid out food to attract a female. Identification is made especially hard because the owls usually face away from the camera, and are of course most active at night. Uganda Loves Me has a new favorite as of 03:29 on May 22, 2020 |

SubponticatePoster posted:As someone who lives in America, it's really strange to see birds we would only ever see in pet stores just hangin' out doin' birb things. It is a really cool thing about Australia, parrots, cockatoos and lorikeets just living and doing their birb things in the cities, in your street even, plus all the other cool birbs we have here too. If you love birbs, Australia is heaven. I bet the cockatoos have taken over Hamilton Island now that there are no tourists visiting, hope no-one left a window open at the hotel!
