That was a weird couple of months when boxing fans got hyped for Rigo again. Thankfully normal service has resumed.

I was somewhat excited to see a highly technical fight that Loma easily won on the cards or after wearing Rigondeaux down over ~10 rounds. I did not expect Rigo to have absolutely no answers at all and for Lomachenko to look like the quicker guy. The path for Rigondeaux to actually win this fight was always vanishingly thin, he would have either had to spark Loma or just utterly and completely control him. Neither of which seemed terribly possible even before the fight and assuming he was in the same shape he was 5 years ago. Grittybeard fucked around with this message at 17:24 on Dec 10, 2017 |

In the write-up I realize I didn't really discuss what would happen to Rigondeaux because most had already tapped Lomachneko as the favorite so, assuming a "normal" decision loss, nothing really would be different in terms of how he would be perceived going forward. However to lose in that fashion is really the worst thing he could have done for his career, hand injury or not. Now all of the people who had wanted to see Rigo fail this whole time (just look at Dan Rafael's twitter for like 6 tweets trashing Rigondeaux) are justified in never giving him an opportunity again. I doubt he would retire on such a sour note but wouldn't be surprised if he just got some random fights in the UK or Japan then slowly faded away. I think it would do well for Lomachenko to emulate Crawford and unify a belt or two before moving up. Lomachenko takes so little damage in his fights that he's definitely someone that can safely fight 3 times a year so a move up to 135 would probably come in a year anyways. Anyways back to the main thread. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3807856
