Mortal luxury was useful only as much as it twisted mortal hearts and ruined mortal faith. Nearly every scripture around the world warned of it, 'The love of money is the root of all evil' to quote but one, which made it all so very, very beneficial to his cause. Those who had been utterly twisted by its siren call and used religion as a dragnet for their own gain were among his truest thralls, which had the side benefit of said thralls having the wherewithal to be of the best service to him.

The Scandal of Shargeton had been exceedingly pleasant: The hypocrites at the heart were no less hypocritical, even those whose livelihoods were diminished, but turning over the rock so that everyone could see the lurking things scurrying let that get magnified to wither and erode the faith of pretty much anyone who took an interest. What, then, for Atlantica City? As he traded niceties with the televangelist, he reached out ahead to see what potential there was on landing, where to sow seeds or to reap, any religion, any denomination, be it mosques, temples, synagogues, churches or wats. Perhaps there were others like himself there, Best to keep an eye on the competition.

Mekhistos Temp +2

Power. Sweet, addictive power. Still but a shadow of what was rightfully his, but Mekhistos has plans for what to do with this small windfall. Proper worship would have to wait, but he could start tilling the ground and planting seeds of devotion.
Akadaimoan warrior-priests took what they called "Crow's Milk" to be fiercer in battle and to better hear the voices of the gods after: if a stimulant based on that would hit the streets, there would be hundreds of addicts ready to believe. He could conjure some out of thin air, but he knew from past experiences that he would never be able to supply enough with that method.
No, he'd have to repeat the trick he used with the Acid mushrooms, and change a plant so that it would become a natural source, ready to be harvested. He'd need many specimens, but as luck had it, he had a favor to call. Grabbing his burner phone, he quickly dialed the number Nick gave him.
"Nick, it's me. Do you remember what I've told you about making something that will blow the competition clear out of the water? I might be able to do it, but I need a suitable starting material: I want you and your associates to bring me as many nightshade plants as you can get your hands on. Do as I ask, and I will deliver on my promise".

A wiry man with a stripe of gray hair running back from a scar that stopped just above his left eye frowned at Edea through a thick piece of glass set in a metal door. After awhile he opened the heavy door: "Well, come on in then. May as well give you a tour since you managed to find me. Afterwards you can tell me how you did that, I thought I bribed the filing clerk well enough to cover my tracks when I bought this missile silo."

At least 3 people in each group.

Surprise! Probably not a surprise, you've been ambushed.

Ambushing the supply caravan's security detachment is almost childishly easily. It's as if the new government has no idea how to protect its roads. Surprisingly, one of the guards isn't quit dead. Hearing his request, several of the civilian drivers gather around, it seems they might be interested in joining you as well. Atlantica city never sleeps. Bright lights blaze up at your private jet as you come in for a landing. The staff obsequiously help you with your luggage and as you walk towards the limo your benefactor usually uses, you see bustling crowds. Marcus calmly takes the note, and walks out of the office as though nothing unusual had happened, not making any attempt to stop the fleeing VP. He heads home, his hours are flexible enough that it shouldn't raise any suspicion. Once home he gets to work, he needed to dispensary the money in the account. Luckily, he worked for a large company as an accountant and the same principles that applied to hiding money from the taxman, apply to hiding it from anyone else who might be looking for it. What he needs is to route the money through a dizzying array of shell companies he could easily set up in various offshore locations. Better yet, since there's no chance he'll need to bring this cash back onto his metaphorical main books at a later date, he can burn the shell companies once they'd serve their purpose hopefully severing the chain anyone else could follow.

Marcus is taking the money and using his skills as Accountant[+4] to make it difficult if not impossible for someone looking for it later to figure out where it went and who has it. Maybe he could start a geek fashion trend too, like that stupid Glass thing from a few years ago. Milton still saw people with those things on and it usually made him chuckle.

------

The Energy 4 2morrow building sat on a cheerful looking compound not far drom the outskirts of the city. The squat white building was covered in mirrors and looked like the architect had tried to give everyone a corner office. The roof, of course, was all solar panels and their location in a valley was carefully planned to have a maximum wind tunnel effect on the massive turbine behind the compound. The air here practically crackled with enthusiasm and optimism.

It just might be more of a challenge that he had expected. Well, Milton always kept his word. One of the few ideals he still clung to. Your word was everything. Even if it was a pain in the rear end to keep.

He had practised a bit with his power before coming here and he found that in tiny doses it actually took very little effort to use. The merest flick of it and he was able to walk right past the guard shack, effectively invisible. Now it was just about finding a good spot and settling in.

After the Greek had snorted a line and, as testified by his contracted pupils, was high as a kite, Mekhistos stood up and grabbed a small knife from a nearby workbench. "You like how you're feeling, right? And you want many others to feel good, since you are an altruist at heart. Well, I have good news for you. I can make sure many others will feel this, and that you will be the one that makes it possible. I only need your belief in me. Oh, and a bit of blood. A small cut on the palm should suffice."

Shaky hands took the offered blade, and a swift cut later, Nick's left hand was bleeding. You leave this beach, the beach next to it, and the fishermen who work in those areas alone and I'll stay out of your way. Mess with me and mine, and you'll get the hook. Other than that, good fishing."

He inclined his head respectfully: Peers were infrequent in his experience, but there was no need to make trouble when this very succinctly answered his questions.

"Ah, an active power. I accede to your terms: I feel their faith is strong, and I have no conflict with you. If anything, I commend you: Not a trace of heresy or deviation from your will, not even the usual human background. I deal in dead and damaged faiths, I have no business here."

At least, not yet. Hard for a faith to die with an active deity, after all. Definitely something to leave for a few centuries. let it mellow. Let the humans get their mitts all over it unguided first.

"Thank you for your welcome. Fare well."

So, that left the university, which was not entirely untainted. For now, he withdrew back to his stronghold.

Eliam can respect that, and accepts the terms unreservedly. Slim pickings compared to the rest of the city, short of subverting that established power. He'll make a move on the university next turn.

OLD MAN YELLS AT CLAN

Milton "Wally" Simmons FP = 1

"Name." Milton said, his head resting in his hand while he absently scribbled on his notepad. In front of his desk was the fifth self-styled motivational speaker to answer his ad. Perfect chestnut brown hair, blue eyes, clean shave, and a lantern jaw. A power suit with a red power tie. Add in some onyx cufflinks and corofram oxfords and you the current specimen of this strange species.

"Yes, sir! My name is Wallace Cromwell, Mr. Simmond and I have got to tell yo..."

"Next!" Milton called out before the man could get through his energetic opening pitch. Just looking at the man was exhausting and to try and listen to him was more than the God of Apathy could endure. The stricken look and the sudden collapse of confidence brought a slight smile to Milton's lips. It wasn't all bad.

The final applicant pushed through the door as the now weeping reject from a bad TV show exited.

"Mr. Simmons? I'm Daniel Jacobson. Former drug addict, current drug addict. I heard you're looking for someone down and out with

experience in speaking to crowds. Well, that fits my bill pretty well. What do you need."

The scruffy face, the tattoos, and especially the pink untucked shirt all caught Milton's attention.

Alright, not sure what I need to create a Prophet. Or... like a pope. Someone to go out an proselytize.

Also enhancing Apathy to +4.

Being surrounded by all these guns was an intoxicating feeling, and the fact that mixed among them was a plethora of opportunities was the icing on the cake. He made mental note of the criminal weapons and potential cops for later investigation. He thought for a moment about looking more closely into the smiling men, but decided to start a bit more slowly. He wasn't sure enough about his powers to risk getting involved in the international arms trade just yet. No, letting his senses spread out, he instead started to feel for any weapons of unusually fine craftsmanship, especially if they were such that it would difficult or impossible to tell so with the naked eye. While he was looking he also attempted to locate the worst quality seller as well, both the best and worst would offer opportunities for him, and each would help him learn more about the world he now wished to exert himself in.

Marcus is using his instinctive divine knowledge of guns[+2] to identify both the best and worst sellers in terms of the quality of the weapons they're offering. I figure both might be good fodder for hooks, or someone might notice him scouting out the very top and bottom.

"So you're like a cleaner wrasse. Should have good pickings all around then." The old sailor puffs on his pipe contemplatively. "Word to the wise then. Things in this town are rarely what they seem."

You instruct your limo driver to circle the university. The campus proper and most of the housing is remarkably clean of hypocrisy. There's no clear border though and there's a sort of grey zone around it where tendrils of hypocrisy snake their way towards the university down twisted streets and rays of truth extend out towards the rest of the town down straight thoroughfares.

A small number of university support staff; janitors, bus drivers, and the like, live in areas of the city blanketed with hypocrisy. A larger number of undergraduates, mostly juniors, also follow the twisted tendrils of hypocrisy to and from the university each day.

Milton "Wally" Simmons FP = 1

You successfully recruit former motivational speaker and current drug addict Daniel Jacobson. How does your power change him? Does it replace his addiction with a new addiction to apathy and inaction?

Marcus Seward

As your walking around you spot two possibilities for worst gun vendor. The first is a scruffy looking guy, Han, who looks like a desk jockey for a pawnstore and is selling weapons that were recently used to commit crimes. You're not sure how the cops haven't scooped him up yet. The guns themselves were of decent manufacture originally but have been poorly maintained.

The other contender for worst dealer has a "100% authentic military surplus" booth. A few unwise souls have purchased firearms more likely to harm them than whatever they point at. You know the add is true because all of these guns are weapons that have been refused by the army for being too shoddy. The conversions to make them street legal have been performing with varying degrees of ineptitude and several are still capable of fully automatic fire if the shooter can survive firing more than once.

The best weapon dealer is a woman. Rally Vincent. She offers a wide range of standard weapons in addition to the exceptional weapons she has made herself. When you talk to her, she tells you that she also takes commissions for custom weapons if you need something really unique.

Things had not gone according to plan. Milton had wanted to create another like his butler, someone to be enthusiastic for him, to go out and spread his name like his internet gangs. Instead both he and Daniel stared at the last slice of pizza on the coffee table, neither able to be bothered to lean over and grab it. Instead the latest first person shooter was up on the massive TV in the living room and both of them were too interested in fragging noobs to care.

About much of anything really. Milton was mildly disappointed his plan hadn't gone like, well, planned. But after a couple of hours he realized it didn't matter and then invited his new prophet over for pizza, beer and video games. That was days ago and neither had moved far from the couch since.

"So, you're like a god?" Daniel had asked at one point between matches. "And there are others like you?"

"Yeah, I guess. I only met a couple, and one was a real douche, but the other, the chick I told you about with the wicked hot eyes, she told me what I was."

"And then you decided to make me a prophet?"

"Sorta, yeah. That was the original idea. I wanted someone with good speaking skills to go spread the Word of Wally."

"But you don't know what that is."

"Not a clue, that's why I wanted you to come up with it."

"But how do I know if it worked, if I am a prophet or whatever."

"When was the last time you shot up, or even thought about shooting up?

"Right before I talked to... oh that makes sense."

The conversation had ended there as the next match started, but the seed had been planted. What would Daniel do with it, knowing now that he was expected to write the Word of Wally?

'Spirit,' hmm? This isn't the situation Sygyzy thought he would be finding himself in at all. This security daemon clearly has some sort of metaphysical qualities, and these researchers appear to be working on something more than just optimizing netcode. This bears further investigation.

For a moment, Sygyzy considers allowing himself to be caught just to see what's going on; in theory, being a God should allow him a more renewable source of power than the average spirit. He thinks? He's not exactly an expert. At any rate, it's possible that he could be captured and then regain his power after a while. But that feels undignified. Also, potentially wrong and dangerous. So perhaps a quick exit is necessary.

The netgod regards the researcher for a moment, committing his features to memory, before... oh, the hell with it. Apparently they can see him, somehow - some sort of visualization program, probably. So he throws them the classic British two-fingered 'salute' - for some reason he was never depicted in the canon flipping someone off with his middle finger, it was probably a cultural thing with the earliest researchers - and grins. No one takes him seriously, and while that's usually a pain in the rear end, sometimes it works to his advantage. He's not a spirit, he's a God, and soon enough these yahoos are going to learn what that means to their peril.

And then? He's gone.

Using my reduced Telecommunications Divine Power, and cranking the No One Takes Him Seriously quirk all the way up to +6 (gimme those Fate Points, it can only lead to something interesting later) to escape Pupper's grasp and blip my way to safety, probably back to Maisie's PC. This merits some thought. And so Althea Mehter went to attend some family business, but promised to be back as soon as she could, and Edea Mater returned from a well-earned vacation.

Good news awaited her. Wally had seen to his part of the deal. Energy 4 2Morrow had fallen from grace hard. Not only would their own work wither on the vine, but the whole vineyard was likely to be considered infected with the same blight. Alternative energy's reputation would suffer, and she idly sent some suggestions to friendly energy ceo's to take advantage of this with marketing campaigns painting miners and oil drillers as dilligent, blue collared, hard workers compared to the pie in the sky lazeabout dreamers and snake oil salesmen that were those in new energies. Honestly, they probably could come up with the ideas themselves, but it never hurt to make sure human civilization didn't manage a last second save.

A message was sent to Wally. "I have seen your work. It was all I hoped for. I owe you a favor."

She read through the reports, most of which seemed perfectly alright. Nothing from Nova Fortuna yet, but she'd let him discover things at his own pace. Then she noticed a few of the new facilities she was seting up in a far off country had been gravely set back by the rising political turmoil. Might be good to check up on it. Anything that drove up the price of oil drove people to alternative solutions, and she couldn't have that.
