True, but it did lead to Dynasty Warriors voice actors trying their damnedest to make Cow Pee sound like a respectable name. :v:

This brings back many fond memories of laughing my rear end off back when I was a teenager, watching X-Play review the annual Dynasty Warriors installment and constantly playing clips of the goofy voice acting. Man, TechTV was great.

Well, okay, not all of their reviews hold up (it's also ironic that Morgan asks why they didn't release the game as "Super Robot Wars" when the answer to that question, the UK series bearing that title, aired on the same channel as X-Play for years).

You could've just stopped there. I really, really want to love stuff like Fafner, since it hits so many points for me in theory, it's just... I simply cannot get past the character designs. i was shocked to discover he had a hand in sCRYed, presumably there was more of a mandate to keep the designs in keeping with the original manga (even if the rest of the series was wildly divorced from the original).
The irony of Hirai working on the Linebarrels anime is that it is the first time since sCRYed that the guy managed to coax exaggerated expressions out of his character designs and not regurgitate the same old crap he churned out for SEED and Fafner. See below:

Last image is in spoiler tags since we've yet to meet the person with Kouichi in this LP. If you followed the SRW L LP, you'll recognize the character.

I think that'd have less to do with Hirai and more to do with the director allowing or encouraging the animators to go off-model more for effect.

I'm actually pretty fond of the Hiraiface in Fafner since it's more stylized (really strong blush stickers, sharper chins, glossier hair, more pronounced face structure so there's less sameface). It works pretty reasonably in Cross Ange as well, which is ironic since most of the cast of Cross Ange is basically interchangeable.

That aside, manga Linebarrels looks a lot less Whinebarrels so I'm gonna look forward to more of rear end in a top hat Protagonist Guy.

Isn't Cross Ange also utterly batshit? I only really know of it from SRWV, but my understanding of it is that it goes off on a speeding rocket to Wackyland and never looks back some way in.

Dont know about batshit, but its definetely poo poo
Fanservice pandering edgy grimdark poo poo that tries way too hard and fails miserably
Its very presence in V dragged that game down for me some 8 (out of 10) points
Specially with how much focus it got and how it tried to tie into a far better series

I was horribly dissapointed to find out it will be on X too

Oh, that's going to far. Watching Sumeragi, Ruri, Akito, Leonard, and freaking Djibril reacting to it was delightful. And that was with it being played straight. Think of how they can subvert it now...

I'm looking forward toCross Ange and Code Geass in the same game. Lulu and Angie can commiserate about their terrible families, wheelchair bound younger sisters, and getting exiled to island nations. Also more tiny winged mechs that don't know which side of the real/super line they belong on. (Also also Embryo bouncing off of Emperor Wakamoto will be hilarious.)

All I know about Cross Ange is that it seemingly has very good music at least from what V got from its soundtrack. Also after it got done with a few opening missions that emphasised everyone in the show is completely terrible I thought it became a pretty solid part of V.

Cross Ange has great music and appears to have been gone in on solely as a troll by pretty much every voice actress involved (almost everyone involved is either close with Mizuki Nana or is Gundam alumni, or both). It's absolute hot garbage, but it's worth watching with your MST3k glasses on. It does have some stellar moments (Sala challenges Ange to a tiebreaker match involving an age-old contest of physicality... Twister), the quality of the show goes up dramatically once Embryo arrives (he's ridiculously powerful, knows it, abuses it, gleefully screws with people by respawning offscreen and walking in the door when killed, which makes him much more entertaining to watch than the rest of the show), and a key component of the final battle involves Ange's love interest rubbing it in the villain's face that he hosed her.

So it's garbage, but it's "haha this is loving terrible what will they gently caress up next" garbage. It's great in SRW V thanks to SRW not being poo poo; in V it gets paired with Destiny and promotes Hilda to Ange's actual love interest (Hilda is voiced by Tamura Yukari, probably best-known for voicing Nanoha... Mizuki also said she wanted Tamura to cook for her in naked apron, take that as you will, those two are a thing), and has an excellent mix of characters being less poo poo and people reacting amazingly to Embryo's everything, notably Saotome comes back from the loving dead for one mission and spends most of it telling Embryo that he's poo poo.

My favorite part might be Athrun having to deal with the lesbian trio immediately latching onto him, though ("Athrun-sama~"). Even Kira gives him poo poo about it. Kira.

honestly I actually really like a lot of the things cross ange does, it has some actually really interesting characterization and plotting ideas and some legitimately funny moments. It's better than like 90% of gundam shows and was the best part of V. Seriously iunno how you can knock points off of V for sincerely wonderful and amazing lines like Ange declaring that they're fighting for gay rights and everyone else in the army going 'Yeah!' Like would SRWV seriously have been better they'd done the macross frontier plot again in place of that or what.

its just also got some really terrible stuff in it, but at least most of that stuff is frontloaded.

Ill admit I have a bias, because I have pure hate for both over the top fanservice shows, and shows that try too hard to be edgy, killing characters left and right or otherwose having tons of horrible poo poo happen for no reason other than to be edgy and such

But V was also my very first exposure to the series, so I was less focused on seeing how characters interacted, and more on learning its plot (and the depths it would sink to) for the first time

Honestly, Cross Ange doesn't even have that many character deaths. There's a bunch at the start and then literally everyone lives through the entire show. Same with the horrible poo poo, it really only happens in the first few episodes. The body count is probably way lower than your average Gundam series.

And you say 'depths it sinks to,' but the plot of Cross Ange is literally just a bunch of people being conscripted to fight dragons, the dragons being good guys, they beat up a misogynist.

Cross Ange isn't exactly a good series but iunno what world you're living in. in V, especially, it's if anything an insanely optimistic series.

I tried to watch Cross Ange when it first came out (the mechs looked cool and I thought the fanservice couldn't be that bad) I couldn't finish Episode 1. It presents itself as the lowest level of trash with a tone-deaf protagonist who reminds me too much of GSD's unintentional vibes of genetic superiority for comfort. I shook my head, went "Goddamnit Fukuda" and promptly forgot about it.

Imagine my skepticism when people started to call the show not just good but even progressive. I gave it a second chance just last year and... It's neither very good nor very bad, but it's very something. I think the most important distinction to make is that it isn't just trashy fanservice, it crosses the line into outright exploitation. And then it becomes an indictment of everything it appears to be in the first few episodes. The dissonance is uncomfortable, but in the same way that Evangelion is uncomfortable. It's like Shinji staring at a comatose Asuka spliced with Me! Me! Me! on loop.

On one hand, it could be argued that you cannot depict a series about fighting against exploitation without actually depicting such exploitation. More than that, you should depict it in such a way that even people inured to it are revolted. On the other hand, a good number of those scenes are clearly there for titillation and don't really contribute anything. It undoubedtly is trying to have its cake and eat it. It uses sex to sell, while at the same time criticizing men who want to make women into sex objects or pure waifus.

I can't recommend Cross Ange to anyone but I respect Fukuda a little more now than I used to. At times it even feels like he's trying to walk back from some of the poo poo he did in GSD.

I'm not sure I'd call it better than 90% of Gundam, but it probably beats 50% of it or so.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

We open up back at JUDA, where Shangxiang explains that she and Quan are from a world called Mirisha. They were allied with Liu Bei and his warriors, locked in battle with the mighty army of Cao Cao. Last they saw of the place was in the middle of their final showdown, the Battle of Red Cliffs, when the warriors’ surging energies collided… and, apparently, their impact blew them all the way to this world.
Yamashita recognizes all those names, being a bit of a Romance of the Three Kingdoms enthusiast. Shangxiang isn’t familiar with it, so Moritsugu explains that what she just related is all ancient history in our world. The story Yamashita mentioned depicts the nations established by Sun Quan, Liu Bei and Cao Cao, and their battles.

The Suns are shocked – were they taken to the future?! Joe really doesn’t think so, as the thought of ancient humans being Gundams sounds way too crazy. Damian agrees, saying that makes their story of aliens coming to Earth in search of some ninja sound realistic.
Shangxiang harrumphs at them having a laugh at her: “From where we stand, it’s the soft-skinned humans of this world that are very unrealistic!” While Joe balks at being called soft-skinned, Ishigami steps in to confirm that JUDA ran tests and, indeed, Sun Quan and Shangxiang ARE humans. So despite our different standards of what “normal humans” are like, he wants everyone to keep that in mind.

Well, it’ll take a while for Mike to get used to the idea of some humans who went and became Gundams. Sun Quan wants to know more about this world, too, and will read this “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. “In that case I suggest you start with the manga. It’s a really long story, mind you…” Yamashita says.
More impressive than all this to Moritsugu is the fact that two completely separate worlds share such common features as Gundams and the Three Kingdoms. Perhaps their Mirisha is simply a parallel version of our Earth? “I wonder,” Ishigami hums. “That might be a simplistic way of putting it…”
…?

Elsewhere, Richard was called by Sumeragi with news: the Celestial Being will be escorting a good-will ambassador. You see, a certain mysterious fleet is currently headed towards Earth; everything’s being kept really hush-hush as a way to avoid mass panic, though.
So, we had the Skrugg, the Elshank and now this fleet as well? Richard figures the Federation government must be freaking out right about now. And they are, especially considering this is a VERY big fleet we’re talking about, so they’re sending their ambassador over as a way to try and get a read on the situation.
Richard can see why, as mobilizing the army without thinking things through could antagonize these new arrivals, and no one needs that right now. But, then, why mobilize the Celestial Being for this? Truth be told, Sumeragi says there’s more to their mission than just being escorts…

Some time later, Ogawa brings in new arrivals to Ishigami: Cpt. Scarlet Hibiki of the WSO, leader of the Gren Falcon Squad, and her subordinate, Lt. Tsubasa Yuki. When Yamashita asks, Ishigami says that the WSO is an elite strike team, wholly independent of the Federation Army. And, apparently, they’re here to get the UX’s help with a certain operation.
Scarlet can’t tell what it’s about just yet, mind, as it’ll be a bit before it goes down. That said, she says they’re willing to work with the UX until then – it’ll serve to brush up some combat skills, too. Seems like the UX has a new gig, but the problem, Richard says, is that the Celestial Being also asked for their help. “The Celestial Being…? Hahah, business is booming, I see,” Ishigami laughs.
Still, JUDA remains the UX’s main client, so Richard wants to hear Ishigami’s opinion on this. Well, personally, he’d like them to stick around as JUDA still has the Linebarrel to deal with… What about our other folks?

Well, Romina fears that the Elshank staying here will likely draw another The Boom attack. Maybe it’d be a good idea for them to take off for a bit to try and draw their attention elsewhere? As for Sun Quan, he’d like to look for his other companions – they were all split up after they being brought to this world. If he and Shangxiang could stay here to do that, that’d be preferable.
So, the Elshank will be leaving and the Suns will stay. What will the UX do?

And now we come to our first route split of the game. As always, we’ll be covering them all:

Rendezvous with the Celestial Being:
Tobikage
Mazinkaiser SKL

:siren: Secret Alert! x4 :siren:
Tobikage secrets #1 and #2, 00 Gundam secret #1, Macross Frontier secret #1 – 1st step: take this route.

Stay with JUDA:
Linebarrels
Mazinkaiser SKL
Gundam SD

:siren: Secret Alert! x2 :siren:
SD Gundam and Linebarrel secrets – 1st step: take this route.

And, bam, the very first route split already shows the design philosophy behind UX’s secrets. If you’re on a fresh game, kiss goodbye to whichever secrets are on the route you don’t take. No buts, they’re gone for you.
That said, individual secret flags you secure in one playthrough stay up into NG+. So, if you, say, take the Celestial Being route here, you could safely take the JUDA route in the next game and you’d still be on the run for all those secrets.
Being NG++ for this reason, I already have both route flags raised, so I can pick whichever. Through one door, we have Mangabarrels and the cool SD Gundam, through the other we have Trailblazer and probably Macrosszzzzzz…

We’re doing JUDA first.

Richard’s concerned about the CB job, but he figures the Linebarrel’s the priority now. It’ll be best if they’re around, in case anything goes down. Ishigami’s glad to hear it, which also means Scarlet and Tsubasa will be helping out with this as well. If you take the other path, Richard concern for the CB mission convinces him to head up into space. Everything else is pretty much unchanged.
Romina, then, has a suggestion for Richard: the Elshank crew could also help the Celestial Being on their mission. Ylbora immediately jumps upon hearing that, but Romina reminds him of how much Richard and Ishigami have worked to help them – now it’s their turn to help back.

Well, Richard is sure they’d appreciate the Elshank’s firepower (or, if you chose that route, he asks if they really want to, as the CB Op already has enough firepower) and Joe’s crew is also fine with it, especially considering they’re all hitching a ride on the ship. They’ll go where Romina decides to go, and the princess is grateful for his support. Ylbora frowns again, and Rennie follows suit – why is Joe only nice to the princess, she fumes quietly. Why’s she looking so mad, Mike asks. “You be quiet, stupid!” Rennie snaps and punches.
Whatever the case, Ishigami says the Suns are more than welcome to stay for as long as they’d like; JUDA will also look for information on their missing comrades. Quan thanks him, and Shangxiang adds that they’ll also help in any way they can. Now here’s hoping Lu Xun and Zhou Yu are doing well.

Wingle (Tsubasa Yuki)
Pilot Skills:
Prevail L1
Support Attack L1
Support Defend L1
Spirit Commands:
Gain
Focus
Mech Features:
Sword
Repair Module
Squad Bonus: Crit rate +10, EN +50 (Crit rate +20, EN +100, 25% change to evade any incoming attack)
Tsubasa’s voice actress: Saori Hayami (other roles: Yon and Shana-Mia in OGs, Hina in Buddy Complex, Aila in Gundam Build Fighters and a bunch more)

Behold, Mazinkaiser SKL’s equivalent of Sayaka and she’s dozens of times more useful. Her stats are decent enough that she can handle herself but, of course, she’s not the bulkiest or strongest unit by any sense of the words.
The Wingle itself has average range, dipping as you move to its better weapons; furthermore, its attack power is more on the weaker side (Shiangxiang is stronger), but she’s not really meant to be leading from the front. Tsubasa’s spirits are a mix of support and offense, so play her strengths: keep her a squaddie and she’ll serve you well.
If you’ve watched the series, you know you’ll want to deploy her, and she’s certainly good enough that doing so won’t feel like a headache.

Carrying on.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

What matters isn’t what you should do. It’s what you want to do.

Over by Kouichi’s school, the boy’s calling out to the new classmate, Emi Kizaki (who inwardly stops short at his approach). He introduces himself as Hayase, also in her class, and mumbles that something’s been on his mind ever since she arrived.
Have they met before? He’s got this feeling that they have from the first moment he saw her. Emi isn’t having it: “Um, can’t you see that I’m ignoring you? I don’t have anything to say to a violent thug like you!”

And, with that, she leaves a stunned Kouichi behind. Him, violent? But he’s brought back to reality as Risako walks over and asks if he wants to have lunch with her and Yajima. They can get together and talk, just like in the good old days.
Kouichi isn’t listening, still coming to grips with being dubbed “violent” and slinks away. “Ko-Kouichi, wait! Don’t ignore me, please!” Risako cries out.

Back to JUDA, Ogawa’s just reported on a directive the Japanese government sent. They’re trying really hard to keep JUDA on a leash, though Moritsugu notes that the Machinas and Factors ARE unknown elements. While, on paper, they recognize JUDA as a defense organization, it’s to be expected that they’d be wary of them.
Regardless, Ishigami says that doesn’t change their priorities right now: find and recover all Machinas. Currently they’ve four under their control, leaving another seven left, including the Linebarrel. Speaking of, Ishigami’s thinking they should try and capture the thing about now. Wasn’t he the one who told us to let him go the last time? “Sure, but… he hasn’t done anything since. It’s so boring,” Ishigami sighs.

Richard isn’t surprised that Kouichi hasn’t done anything, considering how scared he must’ve been after that last battle. “Moritsugu, my boy, you went and shredded an innocent kid’s spirit! Wahahaha!” Ishigami enjoys it.
But never mind Kouichi for now, Ishigami has some better news to deliver: the Suns’ companions have apparently been found. Several eyewitnesses saw them not too far from here, and Ishigami thinks it’s pretty reliable. That’s a relief for Sun Quan, and Shangxiang suggests they take part in tonight’s operation – once it’s all wrapped up, they can go and find Lu Xun and Zhou Yu.
Sun Quan stops short at her suggestion, and while Ishigami appreciates her offer, he does warn that there might be combat involved.

“That’s no problem at all; consider it our way of repaying you for helping us find Lu Xun and Zhou Yu. Right, brother?” Sun Quan slowly nods, but doesn’t share in Shangxiang’s enthusiasm. In that case, Ishigami’ll assign them to work with Moritsugu’s team as an advance party.
Scarlet and Tsubasa are also more than willing to help, the former being eager to see how a veteran as renowned as Richard does battle. Oh, she gives him too much credit. But one question does remain for Richard: what will be our troubled young Ensign’s decision?

: A mission to capture the Linebarrel…?
: Right; Mr. Ishigami decided to change his approach. We’ll be executing tonight.
: The Factor will be wary of us, and there’s a decent chance things will end violently.
: And…? Are you here to tell me what to do?
: That’s all for you to choose. Do you want to come with us, or stay in here?
: What's important here is what you want to do, no…?
: …
: ("What I want to do"… Jin, I…)

Location: Shangri-La – Bridge

: Rrgh… aaargh! D-Destroy the Linebarrel! Eliminate the Factor!
: Hiihihihii! Hihiihhii…! Destroy! Eliminate!

*TV off.*

: Hey, are you sure about letting that whack-job handle this?
: I am not letting him “handle” anything. He is simply a small test. (Katou)
: A test…?
: You saw how the previous battle with the Linebarrel went. That is no ordinary Machina.
: One unhinged soldier is a small price to pay if it’ll so much as allow us to gather more information on it.
: My, commander, are you so taken with the Linebarrel that you’ll give away a soldier and a Machina?
: It won’t be that simple, naturally. I have a bit of a secret weapon ready for this.
: A secret weapon… Do you mean them?
#1: …
#2: …
: Hm, indeed. A legendary warlord whose name is also engraved in the history of our world…
: I look forward to hearing good news, General Lu Bu…
: …

:staredog:

: You know, you’ve been very out of sorts lately, Yajima.
: …
: You haven’t been speaking with Kouichi, either… Did something happen?
: …
: Hrm… And now neither of you are telling me anything. Just a few years ago, the three of us used to be inseparable…
: That’s…
: Hey, you remember that time in grade school when we talked about our dreams for the future?
: Our dreams…?
: Right. Kouichi said that he wanted to get as strong as you. “I wanna get strong, and then I’ll protect the weak and those in trouble,” he said.
: And when you heard that, you said it sounded like he wanted to become a Champion of Justice… but you liked it, because it was a very “Kouichi” thing to do.
: …
: But, now, he’s far from a Champion of Justice. He’s so violent now…
: I wish we could all go back to being good friends like we were before…
: Risako!!
: ?! Yajima…?
: I gotta go home… My folks’ll get really mad if I come in late…
: Ah? O-Okay…
: …
: Hey, listen, let’s go and have lunch tomorrow – all three of us!
: I promise there’ll be no questions, no lectures or anything, alright…?
: Alright… See you tomorrow, Risako.

*Off he goes.*

: (Yajima…)

: …
: Sorry to keep you.
: Fashionably late, aren’t we? Why’d you call me over here for?
: Let’s settle this, Kouichi…
: Settle…? I thought I told you before that there’s no way you’re winning this.
: Then I want you to prove it to me. Prove that you don’t need me anymore.
: …
: Fine, if that’s what you want… Then I’m gonna bash you into the dirt ‘til you realize that I’m in a whole different league!

Mission 7 (JUDA Route) – The Price of Justice

*Punch!*

: Gwaagh!
: Haah, haah…
: (drat it… what’s going on?! Why do I feel awful with every punch I land on him?!)
: Hrgh…! Wh-What’s wrong, Kouichi? Giving up already…?
: Stop this already! Can’t you see that you’re not pulling this off?! It’s impossible for you!
: …
: I realized something the other day, after you said what you did. I realized there’s something rotten inside me…
: “Rotten”…?!
: Yeah… I… I took care of you… just ‘cause I wanted to catch the eye of the girl I like… to catch Risako’s eye…
: ?! Y-You were…?!
: …
: Why are you telling me this now…? I-I’ve always thought of you as—
: A Champion of Justice, huh? Well, relax, Kouichi… I’m nothing of the sort.
: I’m just scum… a lowlife…
: Yajima…
: Sorry, Kouichi – for everything. It’s all my fault…
: …
: Yajima… Do you think the three of us could go back to being—

: Gaaaaaaah!!

: A-Another Machina…?!
: Destroy the Linebarrel! Eliminate the Factor!
: Kch…?! Why’s any of this happening?! drat it… What should I do?!
: Urgh…! Ko-Kouichi…
: ?! Y-Yajima… you’re!

: Kouich… What matters isn’t what you should do…
: But what you… want to do! Rrgh…!
: Yajima, hang in there!

: That’s…!
: Talk about showing up at the worst possible moment… Or, maybe, that Machina…
: Hm, it’s all but surely coming after the Linebarrel...
: Destroy the Linebarrel! Eliminate the Factor!

: I knew it. The Katou Organization!
: I suppose that’s that. I wanted to do this the smart way, but it’s not happening anymore.
: We’ll engage and destroy the Katou forces first. Is that fine with you, Sun Quan, Shangxiang?
: Absolutely! The soul of every Sun is the soul of a tiger, and now they’ll all see what that means!
: …
: (Must I carry on fighting, even in a completely different world…?)
: Try and eliminate as many of the enemy Armas as can be before the rest of our forces arrive. Troops, forward.
: Aye, aye!

Destroy the Stray Machina, don’t lose anyone. The thing’s way at the other side of the map, though, so we’ll slowly make our way across the pond and do what Reiji Moritsugu said – tackle the Armas.

Right the next enemy phase…

: Ah…?! Look over there, master! (Lu Xun)
: I-It is…! (Zhou Yu)
: Lord Sun Quan and the princess! Thank the heavens they’re both well…!
: Y-yes, but… what is happening here? Why are they fighting…?
: Now that you mention it… they look like they’re facing those giants.
: Th-Then we cannot stay here! We must go and assist the young lord and the princess—… hrgh!
: M-Master, you are far too wounded! You cannot move just yet!
: K-Kch, I disgrace myself…! These wounds are pathetic compared to the pain felt by the Tiger, Sun Ce and so many who’ve left us…!
: Master…

: Gh…gaaah!
: H-Hold on, Yajima! I’ll go call and ambulance!
: D-Don’t worry about me, Kouichi… More important than that… is for you to fight…!
: Wh-What?!
: You’re finally strong, right? … So use that power… for good…
: R-Remember… what you told me… that day…
: Th-That day…?
: B-Become a Champion… of… Justice…!
: ?! Y-You…!
: Destroy the Linebarrel! Eliminate the Factor!

*The Stray Machina closes in!*

: Ah! The Machina’s…!
: drat it, that’s where…!

: Yajima…!
: No biggie… Same ol’… song and dance…right?

: YAJIMAAAAAAAAAA!!
: N-No…!
: Why…!
: …
: Y-You’re wrong… Yajima… What I always wanted… was just…!

What matters isn’t what you should do. It’s what you want to do.

: Yajima, I…
: I wanna kill that son of a bitch!

: ?! The Linebarrel…!
: Destroy the Linebarrel! Eliminate the Factor!
: You…! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you if it’s the last thing I do!
: Hmhmhm… Yes, ‘tis the burning cry of your soul that I hear!
: Th-That voice…!

: Hmhmhm… Ahahahaha!
: Lu Bu and Diaochan…?! How are they here…?!
: But he died at the Battle of Guandu…! And why is he with the Katou Organization?!
: We are the Shura, they who devour the souls of man!
: And while the fires of battle rage, the Shura know not death!
: Kch… How is this possible?!

: ?! Those are…!
: More miniature MSs… Are they also from Mirisha?!
: Aye… And that one, he was a man renowned in our world as a warrior without equal…
: It is the Flying General… the Violent Hurricane… It’s Lu Bu!
: Lu-Lu Bu?! As in, the mightiest warlord in Romance of the Three Kingdoms?!
: And he is also the villain who killed our father and brother…!
: Killed…?!
: Quan…!
: So what?! The only killer I care about is that guy…!
: Destroy the Linebarrel! Eliminate the Factor!
: You… You’re gonna pay!

: He’s fully awakened as a Factor…! Capturing him has just become a lot harder.
: What do we do?
: We’ll start by getting rid of the Stray Machina and the Katou units. Once they’re done, we’ll focus on bringing in the Linebarrel!
: Roger!
: You two ready, Lt. Yuki, Ensign Berge?
: Y-Yes, sir… I’m good to go!
: …
: (What do I want to do…? Jin, I…)
: (I want to go and figure out what is truly the right thing to do…!)

Well, this just got a whole lot more complicated. Our objective is still just to beat the Stray Machina, as doing so will progress with the plot.
But where’s the fun/money/kills in that? We’ll deal with these new arrivals first, and then back around to wrap that up. Kouichi and the Machina will be focusing solely on each other, so we don’t need to worry about them.

Diaochan’s voice actress: Ayumi Tsunematsu (other roles: Maiya in Fate/Zero, Marina in 00 Gundam, Lukagge in Gargantia, and some more)

Diaochan’s fine, if a little specialized. She’s very much built as a long range debuff/support unit, and it shows as pretty much everything’s stacked towards her “Funnels”: they pack a decent punch and will apply Morale, Evasion AND Accuracy down.
Her stats are decent enough, nothing great, and SS size, Prevail plus decent mobility can make her dodgy, but nothing a few Strikes can’t solve. Her main purpose is to set up the Shura one-two punch: she weakens the target and then Lu Bu does his thing. And, oh, boy, where do I start with Lu Bu…?

Lu Bu Tallgeese

Prevail L5

All-Canceller
Lu Bu’s voice actor: Atsushi Miyauchi (other roles: Niji Vinsmoke in One Piece, Odin in SMT IV: Final, Geil in Gundam 0083 and a few more)

This guy… he’s one of the strongest enemies in the entire game. Stats-wise, he’s on par with Master Therion (meaning everything important is sky high), but he has special tricks unique to him. For one, everything, sans his weakest attack, will go right through your barriers and will hit like a jet-propelled truck; second, he’s dodgy as gently caress, of course, but that Prevail L5 means he’ll take waaaay more punishment than you might expect. Killing him in one round at this point in the game, on a fresh playthrough, takes effort (and he regens about 8k HP a turn).
All-Canceller means you can’t debuff him in any way, and once Predict/Prevail gets rolling, anyone bigger than him (read: non-SD Gundams) will pretty much need Strike to get good numbers unless they’re packing Ignore Size Difference. Break Morale limit will also double your pain. Oh, and avoid attacks he can parry because his Skill stat is quite high.

Lu Bu’s range starts dipping off when he goes into his best weapons, but his second best is still 1-3, which is enough coverage to reach most units’ big attacks. If you can’t hit from beyond that, come packing some measure of protective spirits or Lu Bu WILL make you pay for it. And the best part is that he’s not even using all his tricks.
Do not pursue Lu Bu. Wanting to do that on a fresh game, at this point of the story, is asking for trouble.

:siren: Secret Alert! :siren:
SD Gundam Secret – 2nd Step: Pursue Lu Bu (and shoot him down with Sun Quan)

Well, poo poo. At the very least you don’t have to worry about his HP falling under a certain threshold, so there’s that. Do note, however, that downing Diaochan will trigger the plot, so focus entirely on Lu Bu.

Kouichi’s first convo is for when he actually moves, the second is when the Stray Machina attacks him:

: Yes, ma’am. I’ll do my best, ma’am!

Here’s her best trick, since I could.

: Okay, then. Watch our backs, Ensign!

When Lu Bu first moves:

: COME! Can anybody provide me with a decent challenge?! Is there one here who can rouse my soul?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EocIGzZ0-e0

And when Diaochan first moves:

: Be it one man or a hundred, I won’t suffer any impeding Fengxian's hunt! (Diaochan addresses Lu Bu by his courtesy name.)

:siren: Dynasty Warriors 6 - Theme of Lu Bu -DW Prime Mix-

Lu Bu attacking Machinas: “I hear its cry, oh, giant! You and your kind have souls as well…?!”

: You killed my father and my brother Sun Ce…! And now I’ll have my revenge, Lu Bu!
: Woman or man, none shall receive mercy from me! You, another of Jiangdong’s tigers! Show me your soul, and then I shall crush it!

Shangxian attacking Lu Bu: “Father, brother… I’ll strike down your killer myself!”

And when you get Lu Bu under about 60%...

: Hahahah… Yes, excellent! Skirmishes like this are precisely what brought me back to the battlefield!
: This thrill! This scorching excitement, it grips me! It ignites—MY SOOOOUUUUL!!

: Hrgh… what a crushing spirit!
: This accursed Shura…!
: Rise, dwellers of this world! Face the hammerblow of my soul and find the death that awaits you!

I seriously hope you still have someone available with Invincible, Alert or whatever, else there’s a nigh certain change Lu Bu will straight-up oneshot someone after that.

: I know mercs aren’t supposed to care about “right” or “wrong”… but, dang, you’re a real bad egg!
: I care not for your barking. Let the voice of your soul reach my ears!

: Why are you doing any of this…?! What’re you after?!
: What I thirst for is battle itself! I’ve no goals to fulfill when I step onto a battlefield, for I have already gained what I desired!
: Are you kidding me?! What’s the point in any of that, then?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqAUK2qHv4o
I needed a guinea pig to showcase his best attack. And you see that? Were that a crit, Tsubasa would’ve been oneshotted (do note, I’d already given the Wingle 2 pips of upgrades on HP and Armor).

: You still seek battle even in a different world, Lu Bu?!
: How did a man like you ever come to be?!
: Hmph… I see you remain ever so compassionate, young cub. So were your father and brother. Will you also mirror their pitiable deaths?
: Wh-What?! You fiend…!
: Hahahah… Do you hate me?! Then take sword in hand! Stir my soul with the fire of your rage!

And here’s Sun Quan’s best trick.

: Hrgh…! Hah, hahahah… Good, this is the precisely what I sought!
: My soul has been scarred by your might! I shall eagerly await the moment when we may cross blades again!

: Fengxian…?!

: How could it be that even Lu Bu and his men were brought to this world…?
: Do the heavens seek to test us here as well…?

Whew… that’s that problem taken care of. Now we just double back and wreck the Stray Machina – it’s no challenge whatsoever, as even its D-S.O.I.L. is very weak.

I wanted to be like you…

: What’s wrong, Kouichi… Why that look on your face?
: Yajima?! You’re alive…!
: What are you crying for, huh? Didn’t I tell you it was no biggie?
: But, Yajima… I…!
: It’s fine. What you’ll do from here on out is way more important than what is already in the past.
: And I know, without a shadow of doubt, that you…
: Y-Yajima, wait…!

But that was just a dream, as Kouichi wakes up at JUDA’s infirmary and jumps straight out of bed. Ogawa comes in right then and explains that he’s a guest at a certain company’s HQ.
She introduces herself as the president’s secretary but Kouichi sniffs that he doesn’t really care for who she is: “Ooh, the dossier was right. You DO have a pretty big mouth… if nothing else,” Ogawa quips. Turns out Kouichi’s naked – whoops.

Cut back to the Shangri-La, Masaki (with the brown clothes) reports that not only the Linebarrel wasn’t destroyed, their own Machina was also taken. Katou isn’t too broken up over this, as it allowed them to get much useful information – it was a good trade. Crazy-looking Riku is sure things would’ve gone a whole lot better had he been in charge of the operation.
He asks that Katou let him also deploy the next time, eager to show the commander what his imagination is capable of. Masaki glares.

Also at JUDA’s infirmary are Zhou Yu and Lu Xun, the former being very apologetic for his wounds worrying Shangxiang so. She pooh-poohs at that, saying he should be happy that they’re finally together again – now Zhou Yu only has to focus on getting better and they’ll all head back to Mirisha together!
There’s still the fact, Lu Xun points out, that they’ve no idea what brought them to this world in the first place. Was Sun Quan’s hypothesis correct, and the clashing energies at the Battle of Red Cliffs were the cause?
Zhou Yu isn’t so sure: Lu Bu was already dead by the time of that battle, and here were both him and Diaochan. That points towards there being another cause, beyond what happened at the Red Cliffs. “Or, perhaps, it was by the will of the heavens that we were transported to this world,” he ponders.

Over by Ishigami’s office, Sun Quan says that his original plan was to leave JUDA as soon as Zhou Yu’s recovered from the wounds he suffered at the Battle of Red Cliffs… but that changed with Lu Bu revealing himself. Sun Quan refuses to go anywhere until that man is defeated.
Moritsugu asks if it’s to take revenge for his family, but, no, Sun Quan says he’s well aware that fighting with a heart filled with hatred and thirst for revenge leads only leads to one’s self-destruction. That being said, he doesn’t want the people of this world to suffer at Lu Bu’s hands like he did.
“Then you’ll hear no complains for me, Sun Quan. What matters is what you want to do,” Ishigami nods. Quan and his men are more than welcome to keep fighting with us. And, with that done, there’s another matter to be settled… Kouichi.

: …
: So… you were the one behind everything…?
: I confess I had to resort to some rather violent tactics to confirm whether or not you were a Factor. My apologies for that.
: That said, I’m not to blame for everything that’s happened. A big part of that responsibility belongs to you too…
: Wh-What…?!
: That thought never crossed your mind, hm? You never even tried to understand the nature of the power you gained… but if you had, maybe you wouldn’t have gotten your best friend killed.
: Y-YOU SON OF A…!
: Still don’t get it, do you? Your friend was killed precisely because of that rash nature of yours.
: …?!
: …
: Kch… drat it! I always wanted to be stronger but… but I never wanted anything like this! Why did I become the Linebarrel’s Factor anyway…?!
: Well, there are two major conditions for one to become a Factor.
: The first is to be injected by a Machina’s particular nanomachines. And the second…
: Is for that person to be killed by said Machina.
: Killed… by the Machina?!
: That’s right. You were killed by the Linebarrel. Simply put…
: You died that day, three years ago.

Here’re the convos we missed today:

: How does any of this excite you? Why do you follow a man like that?!
: One is because my soul demands it; the other is because my woman’s heart compels me. Can you not grasp that?

--

: Hah… A man with the soul of a demon? Step forward, so that I may feast upon it!
: OUT OF MY WAY!!

--

: For how long are you going to continue with this insanity?!
: How long? For as long as we draw breath!

--

: You should not have come here, young tigress. Leave at once!
: It’s you who needs to get lost! I’m going to end my father and brother’s killer!

Needless to say, historically, Lu Bu did not kill Sun Jian and Sun Ce. :v: Lu Bu and Sun Jian fought a few battles, when Sun Jian was trying to defeat Dong Zhou, but Sun Jian crushed him every time. The two of them had no interactions past that point, and Lu Bu never met Sun Ce.

Lu Bu
You probably know the gist of the story: Lu Bu wound up working for Dong Zhou, a corrupt warlord who had basically taken control of the Chinese government by force, Lu Bu betrayed and murdered Dong Zhou, wandered in and out of the services of various people before ultimately being defeated and executed by Cao Cao. There's a lot of interesting details to his life, but it'd be a little hard to go into in a paragraph, so I'll just add a couple of fun historical anecdotes:

1) During his wanderings after killing Dong Zhou, one of Lu Bu's subordinates betrayed him, wanting to turn him over to Cao Cao or Liu Bei in hopes of a reward. The traitor and a few of his followers volunteered for night watch, then just wandered over to Lu Bu's tent as he was about to get his gently caress on. Cue naked Lu Bu running screaming through the camp for his troops to wake up and kill the traitors. Actual historical facts here, folks.

2) Cao Cao was considering recruiting Lu Bu instead of executing him. In fiction, he usually decides against it on his own based on his disloyalty to Dong Zhou, but in history it's actually Liu Bei who advised against it for that reason.

Also, since I doubt Dong Zhou is in this game if Lu Bu and Diaochan are supposed to be dead, here's a fun story about him: he wanted to make it so the common people had no choice but to rely on him and support him. So he made an effort to mint his own currency that could only be used in cities and towns he controlled, and offered people large amounts of it if they turned in their actual currency. Yes, the man literally tried to make Bison dollars.

Diaochan

Didn't exist! Or, well, one of the reasons for Lu Bu betraying Dong Zhou was that Lu Bu would often seduce Dong Zhou's servant girls. Dong Zhou never found out about it, but Lu Bu was always worried he would, so he already had reasons to be paranoid of his boss.

In fiction, Diaochan is the daughter of a government official who is sent to seduce both Dong Zhou and Lu Bu in order to drive a wedge between them, and then Lu Bu gets his assassination on. From there, what happens differs from story to story. In some stories, she legitimately falls in love with Lu Bu and follows him for the rest of his life, until being executed with him by Cao Cao. In other stories, she runs away after Dong Zhou dies before being found by Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei - one version of that story has them leading her to a small village where she can live the rest of her life in peace, another version of that story has Zhang Fei and Liu Bei arguing over who deserves to marry her until Guan Yu just kills her. Yeah, that one's a bit hosed.

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."
Well, I'll let Endorph handle the Three Kingdoms lore since they're clearly way more knowledgeable, but I got more Gundam Facts. First off, a small correction, not every SD character is based on the UC timeline. As you can see, some are based on Gundam Wing, or other series in the franchise. I'll also format it a little bit.

AMX-004 Qubeley

Diaochen is based on the personal mobile suit of Haman Karn, the primary antagonist of ZZ Gundam as well as a driving force behind the conflicts of Zeta Gundam. She was the leader of Neo-Zeon, a group aiming to re-prosecute the One Year War despite losing badly (though, the abuses of power by the Titans are what really garnered support for her cause). As a character, she had many attribute in common with other controversial conqueror types like Nobunaga or Napoleon, though she also had a semi-romantic subplot with ZZ's lead, though it was acknowledged to be largely caused by a resonance between their Newtype abilities (something the main villain of Zeta, Paptimus Scirocco, openly abused to get hopelessly codependent Newtype followers willing to die for him for basically no reason except his Space Powers were highly compatible with other people's Space Powers, Yoshiyuki Tomino is kind of a weird dude). Anyway, the Qubeley itself was developed from the Rick Dias (via a Psycommu-equipped variant) and the Elmeth, the mobile armor piloted by the ill-fated Lalah Sune (the girl whose silhouette usually appears when the Hi-Nu Gundam uses its Fin Funnels). The Qubeley was the first Mobile Suit to be equipped with Funnels, a replacement for the Elmeth's large and unwieldy Bits. The primary difference between Bits and Funnels is that Bits have onboard generators, while Funnels use E-caps that need to be periodically recharged from the mobile suit's generator (this is why Bits tend to be ammo-based, and Funnels energy-based).

For those unfamiliar, Bits and Funnels are all-range weapons capable of acting semi-independently from the mobile suit, like a carrier using a flight of very tiny attack jets. Most such weapons use beam cannons, but some are known to carry missiles, or even melee armaments. Only Newtypes are capable of the rapid calculations and reflexes demanded by these weapons, however, making them difficult to put into wide usage. That said, Oldtypes are capable of using wire-assisted Incom units, which don't have quite the same range or freedom, but still provide an option for attacking from multiple vectors. The distinctive wing binders on the Qubeley's shoulders provide increased mobility, as well, and the AMX-004 is one of the first Zeon suits to use a dual sensor rather than the signature single "eye" used on suits like the Zaku. The Qubeley would later be developed into the Qubeley Mk II (used by the Purus) and later a Mass-Production Type. Interestingly, despite being a slightly superior model due to two additional funnels and a remote control system, the Mk. II is usually depicted as a vastly inferior unit to the original Qubeley in SRW, and when it appears, the MP version is used as the weakest of all despite having the most powerful weaponry by far (though, it comes at the cost of mobility).

OZ-00MS2B Tallgeese Mk. III

Lu Bu Tallgeese is based on the Tallgeese series of mobile suits from Gundam Wing, with his body being the Tallgeese Mk. III. The original Tallgeese was a prototype unit used as the basis for the five (secretly six) Gundams that would become central to Gundam Wing, as well as the various inferior mobile suits used by OZ, but it was brought out of mothballs by Zechs Merquise in order to defeat said Gundams (it was the only suit available with high enough specs). It came with a beam halberd and a large, arm-mounted dober gun (a high-powered rifle weapon), on top of standard mobile suit weapons like the beam saber. The original Tallgeese's most dangerous weapon, however, was not anything it was constructed with, but a newly-developed heat lance capable of piercing even Gundanium alloy. After Zechs was forced to self-destruct the Tallgeese in order to claim the Wing Zero (temporarily, at least), the remains were used to build the Tallgeese II, while much of its combat data went into the construction of the Gundam Epyon, both by OZ leader Treize Kushrenada. The former was used by Treize himself in the final battle of Gundam Wing, and was ultimately destroyed by Chang Wufei in his Altron Gundam. The Mk. II had better performance than its predecessor, but gave up most of its weaponry (though Treize's personal philosophy meant that he vastly favored closing to melee and employing his beam saber, anyway). The Epyon was used by Zechs in his attempts to settle things with Heero, ultimately resulting in his loss, its most notable trait was that it had no long-range weapons because Treize thought ranged weapons were for cowards (though he kept the dober gun on his Tallgeese, I guess for tradition's sake).

The Mk. III was constructed based on both the Mk. II and Epyon, using the same general design principles as the Tallgeese, but including the Epyon's Heat Rod weapon (a chain-like armament that can be super-heated and used to slice clean through enemy mobile suits). It also replaces the traditional dober gun with the mega beam rifle, a gun nearly as powerful as the Wing Zero's twin buster rifle. It supposedly also uses a modified version of the Epyon System in its controls, which was itself a customized version of the Zero System (a suite of highly-sophisticated predictive software that feeds nearly precognitive levels of predictive combat data directly into the pilot's mind, requiring unparalleled focus to control, lest the pilot go out of control from the sensory overload), but this feature never makes it into SRW. The Mk. III was once again used by Zechs, under the alias "Wind", in Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. It should be noted that only the original Tallgeese had a halberd like Lu Bu there does, and his headpiece is reminiscent of Gundam Epyon's tail section when it was in its dragon-like flight mode, though it's a little more purple than the Epyon's distinctive burgundy.

By the way, unrelated to Gundam, but the Wingle's design is based on Devilman Lady, another work by Go Nagai, known for being pretty dark, especially compared to Mazinger Z (though later Mazinger works would end up inheriting Go Nagai's preference for dark storylines).

I'm so, so happy that Kouichi gets to have his psycho black eyes, and that Ishigami actually gets to show his teeth. :keke:

Also, the story of Lu Bu running around naked is even better, because he was yelling Gao Shun's name (leader of Lu Bu's elite soldier guys) while he was doing it.

Yeah, a lot of fiction portrayts Zhang Liao as Lu Bu's best friend, but really, it was Gao Shun. Probably just a case of Zhang Liao going on to be important, so in fiction it makes more sense to combine the two 'characters.'

TAMASHIIIII! Ok, I'm liking Lu Bu already.

Shangxiang's animation where she's all eager to catch her returning weapon, only to have it stick into the ground just short made me laugh out loud. Well played, game.
Personality-wise, I never read the Three Kingdoms, or played Dynasty warriors or whatever, so I'm pretty much just taking it as it goes. Which means I'll probably miss all the parts where the SD Gundams diverge from the source material.

And dang, manga Yajima first gets impaled with a building's skeleton, then gets vaporized? The author really wanted him dead, didn't he.

Wingle...it looks like a robot used by the female sidekick in a Mazinger-show, only darker. So pretty much on point for Mazinkaiser SKL.

And since I forgot about it last time and we've gotten to the point where I think it is safe to talk about it, I'll point out one similarity I've seen between Machina and Deus Machina. Namely, both transform their pilots. We've seen with Machina that their user becomes superhuman or at least very close. Kouichi turns from the weak bullied kid into super-thug who can take on whole gangs by himself. On top of that there is a regenerating feature (Factors are made from corpses after all.), and a mental change towards higher aggression that could just be Kouichi being drunk on his newfound powers or a part of the design. Machina are weapons and ensuring that the pilot is willing to use them in battle rather than say, run away and hide, could be a feature instead of a bug.

The Deus Machina...well let me clarify something first. I don't believe Kurou gets anything from Demonbane itself. His powers come from Al. But given that she's also the power-source of Demonbane, it works out to pretty much the same thing in practice. Since the only other Deus Machina we've seen is the Liber Legis which is also operated by a sorcerer/book-girl combo, I have so far seen no evidence that they can be piloted by someone who isn't a bonded sorcerer.
Now back on topic, Kurou mentioned he'd 'dabbled' a bit in the occult, which mostly seems to mean that he recognizes the terms used but the moment he partnered up with his book, he got a few levels in sorcerer and became the world's most ripped mime. It's not been outright stated what other powers he gets but so far I have observed the following.
1: Spellcasting. Al mentions that Kurou can't do this on his own so I come to the conclusion that he needs her for that. Whether it is just magic power or if she handles a part of the mental legwork as well, I can't tell.
2: Phenomenal cosmic powers possibly coming from point 1. If Kurou's potential is anything like Therion's, he can get to the point where even on foot the proper response is "We need our giant robot, NOW."

So yeah, that's what I've noticed so far. But this looks less like a point of similarity than it looks like convergent evolution. Similar end result (superpowers, pure physical for Kouichi, more magical for Kurou), different method. It's not enough to make a claim that they'd be related to each other in any way, other than both having Machina as part of their name.

These lines do not follow each other well. It seems like Koichi should be answering "rotten" rather than apparently being shocked by something that wouldn't be said until several lines later.

quote:

Lu Bu’s voice actor: Atsushi Miyauchi (other roles: Vinsmoke in One Piece, Odin in SMT IV: Final, Geil in Gundam 0083 and a few more)

Vinsmoke is a family name, and one shared by many characters (including one of the Strawhats themselves), so saying Vinsmoke here says about nothing. The Vinsmoke voiced by Miyauchi is Niji.

Also it seems like Lu Bu should genuinely be the Turn X rather than Tallgeese with his mindset. Still, hearing him and seeing Senpuu Bakuretsushou brings me good memories of one of the PSP SD Gundam games, where I got him early and he was pretty useful, not to mention how good his shouting feels, Miyauchi does a great job.

It's absolutely a feature but the reasons why it is are more complex than you think. I won't say more though, let's let the actual game get to that point.

Also I'm really enjoying the Romance of the Three Kingdoms breakdowns, so thanks for those, Endorph. I'm learning a lot.

Also, maybe people more into Three Kingdoms stuff can explain, what's the big appeal of Lu Bu? From what I've gathered, he's kind of a gently caress-up whose biggest accomplishment is killing his boss then getting executed because nobody trusts him enough to actually employ him. Like, if anything, his most significant attribute appears to be that Koei loves him so much they turned him into the biggest badass of all time in Dynasty Warriors. But I could be getting a limited view and he's actually, like, the Son Goku (Journey to the West, not Dragon Ball) equivalent in Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

The idea of Lu Bu as an invincible badass comes from the original Romance of the Three Kingdoms novels; Koei was just being 'faithful' to that.

Lu Bu was heavily involved with the early years of Cao Cao and Lie Bei's rises to fame, so he was inflated to make their defeat of him a more incredible feat. Not that he wasn't actually without talents or anything, but he's not "a warrior worth a thousand" as it goes.

I think the reason behind having the Qubeley shown as better than the MK II is because it's Haman's Qubeley, which undercuts how good a pilot Haman IS. Despite using a suit that has been slightly beaten out by a MK II and more beaten out by the MP version OF the MK II, Haman was still more than capable of taking on all enemies even in superior suits. Hell, the only reason she didn't beat Judau was because she couldn't truly bring herself to kill him, so she didn't use her ALL her funnels on him, and even then they still ended up in a draw thanks to Newtype Hax. It only counts as a loss for Haman because she killed herself at the end.

Haman is like one of the main reasons ZZ is super watchable and a favorite for me, as you get to see her development and essentially her chance to 'get out'. Like... so many people don't loving get Tigerbaum. Tigerbaum is essentially Haman's branching pathway to choose whether she's going to continue down the path of self-destruction or to avoid it. No one knows who she is then, they don't know what Haman Khan looks like except for Judau, an as everyone repeatedly brings up to Judau, he's in love with her and can't make rational decisions about it anyway. Silent Voice essentially sums up her feelings regarding it, she can't give up on her path, even when she tries to, eventually, That's why Tigerbaum starts with antics and ends with death because, at this point in ZZ, Innocence is gone and dead, you cannot in fact, go back to the way things were, there is no getting off the path of destruction Haman is on.

Haman died because she wanted to die. She could have surrendered, and there's a good chance that Judau would have attempted to protect her even then. But she, at that point, was not fighting because she honestly believed she could actually win the war at that point, and it wasn't a hate-filled moment to kill Judau, it was essentially one last chance to connect with someone who, due to the way Newtype connections work, had wormed their way into her heart, and in a way made her grateful that she'd come back.

Basically along side Cima Haman should be recruitable in every available SRW.

Lu Bu was said to be a very strong warrior and a talented archer historically, but obviously that doesn't really translate into being a good general.

Ironically, the closest real life equivalent to Lu Bu's feats in fiction would probably be Zhang Liao, his former subordinate. Cao Cao had stationed him at Hefei with about 7000 men. Sun Quan was personally leading a force of about 100,000 to conquer it. He'd recently scored several major victories against Cao Cao, and the Wei forces were fairly splintered across multiple fronts, hence why Hefei was so relatively undermanned. Cao Cao had left instructions with Zhang Liao that, in the event of an enemy invasion, he was to charge the enemy forces no matter the odds. Li Dian and Yue Jin, two other generals stationed at Hefei, told Zhang Liao that Cao Cao obviously hadn't foreseen such a large enemy force and that they should hole up and wait for reinforcements, and Zhang Liao's response was "Our lord is away at war. By the time reinforcements arrive, we'll already be done for. Victory or defeat, it all depends on this battle. Why are the two of you still hesitating?"

Zhang Liao then hand-picked 800 elite troops His basic plan was to attack the enemy while they were still setting up camp for a siege, catch them off guard, and thin out their numbers and reduce their morale. He was fully willing to die in the attempt, just like his troops, but he was hoping that he'd cause enough ruckus to buy Li Dian and Yue Jin, plus the 6,200 remaining troops, a few more days for reinforcements to arrive.

That plan didn't work out, but only because Zhang Liao kicked a literally unholy amount of rear end. He defeated two minor Wu generals who had been setting up a forward camp and yelled insults and taunts at the Wu forces. The leader of Sun Quan's bodyguards, Chen Wu, rode out to challenge him, and Zhang Liao killed him personally and routed the detachment of troops that had ridden out with him. Ling Tong, a famous Wu general, finally arrived on the scene and commanded the Wu forces to form a defensive position up on a hill. Zhang Liao tried to taunt the Wu forces into coming down, but they just responded with arrow volleys - by this point, he was down to somewhere between 100 and 200 men, (or had lost 100 to 200 men, the accounts vary. Either way, he'd finally slowed down) so Sun Quan sent a guy named He Qin down to surround Zhang Liao and finish the job. Zhang Liao and a few of his troops managed to break out and start retreating, but most of his remaining men were still trapped - so he just casually turned back around and charged He Qin, breaking the encirclement, and they all retreated. The Wu forces also backed off, to reorganize after Zhang Liao had devastated their ranks.

Sun Quan still attempted a siege, but his troops' moral was very low at this point, and the defenders were riding high. About a week later, when plagues started to break out among Sun Quan's troops, who weren't used to the water this far up north, he decided to retreat. Zhang Liao, deciding that Sun Quan hadn't suffered enough, destroyed a bridge and split Sun Quan's forces, leading a couple thousand men to try and kill or capture him once and for all. It got so bad that some of Wu's most famous generals like Ling Tong and Gan Ning were fighting on foot, back to back, to try and buy time. When Sun Quan finally managed to flee, the Wu generals all had to jump into the river to run away. Longer than 100-1 odds, and Zhang Liao had the Wu troops moving like they were the ones fighting a desperate, losing battle.

So basically, crtl + f replace 'Zhang Liao' with 'Lu Bu' in your mind and reread all that and that's Lu Bu's appeal. Only Zhang Liao's a little more fun to think about since he actually did all that, and also his battlefield exploits actually had a lasting impact on history instead of not really mattering at the end of the day, but hey.

tl;dr wheres zhang liao

I can totally agree with that line of reasoning. Whereas in the case of, say, Char, whose death serves a meaningful narrative purpose when the events of CCA are played out in full, the deaths of most other characters who aren't so bad, like Cima, Haman, Gato, etc. only serve to reinforce themes that were already strongly in play prior to that point, and reversing their outcomes to a more SRW-optimistic version would only be appropriate, whereas Char getting the hell over his nihilistic egotism would sort of undermine his character arc (of course, Banpresto loves the story turn of "the various other series' more positive outcomes and Zeta/ZZ being less full of tragic death convince Quattro that there's hope for humanity after all", as seen in the Z timeline, assuming they address CCA at all).

While I agree with what you're saying, gonna have to disagree with you on Gato being one of the "characters who aren't so bad" given his idolisation of Gihren Zabi, willingness to perform a colony drop and his general hypocrisy regarding the Feddies making the GP02 being such a horrible thing, yet his usage of it isn't. I will grant his loyalty to his men being one of his positive characteristics, but Gato honestly feels like he's loyalty gone too far. Yet he's recruitable several times, whereas Cima hasn't been recruitable once. You can't even use the loyalty aspect, since she only left Zeon after she was used as a scapegoat for the nerve gas used in the colonies Zeon used for Operation British, when she was told it was just knockout gas. Hell, seeing as she's on the same side as the Albion crew in the final battle, it makes more sense for her to be recruitable, but she isn't, and it baffles me. I mean, is she unpopular in Japan and/or in Banpresto? Cause if that's the case, I can see why, but if not, I don't get it.

I feel like that's probably the intent of the character, but that's a positive trait in traditional Japanese and American culture, which probably explains his popularity on both sides of the pond. That, and the epic "SOLOMON, I HAVE RETURNED" scene.
