Man. I really like the actual animated Fafner because it has a lot of stylized choices with the Hiraifaces, like using huge blush stickers and emphasising the hair and cheeks, but that does not come out at all in this game. So when do Shinn and Kazuki get a combination attack?

How many units fit into a squad in this game? In @3 you could easily fight upwards of 50 enemies by like, stage 20, since they could pack four units into one tile.

If it's only two units for a tile then unless this game has J-level reinforcements or throws seas of enemies at you, getting 200 kills in 40ish stages sounds... difficult.

It has more to do with how much forced deploy they have and how frustrating their secrets are, which is why I don't mind Daitarn and Zambot so much (they're rarely forced deploys unless the plot is involved, which it is in Z so whatever). It's like saying "water stages" to anyone who played OG1. Also this is more of me having a whinge but Eureka has much better stats and spells than Renton and a better cut-in and you lose her almost immediately because mech series require male pilots in the lead mech. That being said, the Devilfish's finishers in Z2 do look amazing.

Muv-Luv mechs are mostly based on IRL military aircraft; Total Eclipse is basically Top Gun with giant robots. And the animated Su-47 is amazing beyond all belief. (It was an Su-37 in the VN but the anime gave the Scarlet Twins an Su-37 by default and had them upgrade into an Su-47 when they got their Four on.) There's also a joke sidestory VN which is Muv-Luv but with Saint Seiya and G Gundam, and the final hero mecha is a Susanowo made by combining three fighter jets. It's amazing.

I'm actually pretty fond of the Hiraiface in Fafner since it's more stylized (really strong blush stickers, sharper chins, glossier hair, more pronounced face structure so there's less sameface). It works pretty reasonably in Cross Ange as well, which is ironic since most of the cast of Cross Ange is basically interchangeable. That aside, manga Linebarrels looks a lot less Whinebarrels so I'm gonna look forward to more of rear end in a top hat Protagonist Guy.

Cross Ange has great music and appears to have been gone in on solely as a troll by pretty much every voice actress involved (almost everyone involved is either close with Mizuki Nana or is Gundam alumni, or both). It's absolute hot garbage, but it's worth watching with your MST3k glasses on. It does have some stellar moments (Sala challenges Ange to a tiebreaker match involving an age-old contest of physicality... Twister), the quality of the show goes up dramatically once Embryo arrives (he's ridiculously powerful, knows it, abuses it, gleefully screws with people by respawning offscreen and walking in the door when killed, which makes him much more entertaining to watch than the rest of the show), and a key component of the final battle involves Ange's love interest rubbing it in the villain's face that he hosed her. So it's garbage, but it's "haha this is loving terrible what will they gently caress up next" garbage. It's great in SRW V thanks to SRW not being poo poo; in V it gets paired with Destiny and promotes Hilda to Ange's actual love interest (Hilda is voiced by Tamura Yukari, probably best-known for voicing Nanoha... Mizuki also said she wanted Tamura to cook for her in naked apron, take that as you will, those two are a thing), and has an excellent mix of characters being less poo poo and people reacting amazingly to Embryo's everything, notably Saotome comes back from the loving dead for one mission and spends most of it telling Embryo that he's poo poo. My favorite part might be Athrun having to deal with the lesbian trio immediately latching onto him, though ("Athrun-sama~"). Even Kira gives him poo poo about it. Kira.

Sadly they took the SD Gundams out of G-Generation OVERWorld so I won't get a chance to show them off in my LP. You get Lu Bu at like 10% unlock rate and putting him in a Tallgeese turns it into the Lu Bu Tallgeese which is just hilariously overpowered on early stages. [TAMASHIIIIIIIIII intensifies]

Worth it for having that come up verbatim in Z2.2 though... I actually thought 00S2 was better than S1, despite obviously being worse from the perspective of good writing, because it at least comitted to being a super robot show, whereas S1 was extremely schizophrenic and just couldn't decide what it was going to do. It doesn't help that S1 starts out by making a big deal out of things like logistics and limited numbers and so on and then immediately introduces CB using literal throwaway beam weapons and other items (at least they had the grace to have this come back to bite them, but that disappeared basically 1/3 of the way into S1). Can we at least agree that the 00 Gundam is a really good design? (Not the Raiser version, that's garbage.)

It's like Tsubasa Chronicle or Gundam SEED Destiny, the show may be garbage but goddamn the OST is fantastic.

Frontier kept all the music in one label, which is how SRW is able to get away with using so much music from it.
