I saw phantom thread and was surprised how good it was. Expected a boring romance where the Difficult Man is won over by the Sensible Woman and um
....

Going in I didn't know it was PT Anderson directing so I did not expect the weird darkness of it. It moves along well and it's fun talking about afterwards

Indeed.

Movies I've seen from 2017 in no particular order:

Blade Runner 2049
Star Wars TLJ
Phantom Thread
Dunkirk
Ladybird
Killing of a Sacred Deer
Get Out
A Ghost Story
I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore
Alien: Covenant
Bright

I have plenty yet to see from 2017 but I'd have to say that the best from the above list was either 2049 or PT.

i thought it was gonna go to Lady Bird because it allows Hollywood to feel good about itself for bringing attention to sexism while doing nothing to actually solve the problem. but a friend of mine talked about how Shape of Water is an homage to old Hollywood in a way, and i changed my mind. there's nothing the academy likes than a flattering portrayal of old Hollywood

on the other hand, i was convinced La La Land would win last year for the same reason, so what do i know, really

Honestly I'm just glad Blade Runner got Visual Effects and cinematography. Say what you want about the movie's length but holy poo poo it was a gorgeous three hours.
