I'm trying to decide between two character concepts: 1) A trigger-happy, drug-addled gonzo journalist who came to the desert to find peace and instead found a monster. But enough about him, there were also some vampires or something. or 2) A straight-laced poster-boy Fed exiled to a remote VASCU branch for political reasons who'll inevitably start to crack as realizes one can't stare into the abyss indefinitely; it will either stare back or blink, and both possibilities are terrifying.
