Mission Briefing posted:

Episode 1: "Convoy SE-119"

The Excelsior-class USS Fearless has recently received a minor systems upgrade and been assigned to the Shackleton Expanse, a remote area far from the heart of Federation space -- even beyond the borders of the Klingon and Romulan Empires. The very lightly-explored area of space is of particular scientific and strategic interest to both the Federation and its Klingon allies, though more serious efforts to colonize and chart the region have been hampered by unusual stellar phenomena that emit peculiar forms of electromagnetic and gravimetric distortions, making navigation hazardous.

Supporting the Fearless in its mission is nearby Starbase 364, nicknamed "Narendra Station". Though a Starfleet installation, Narendra Station is also run in collaboration with the nearby Klingon Empire. The station serves as a pilot project of inter-species relations, and has been successful in its mission since its construction 15 years ago.

In the past months, the science department aboard Narendra Station has detected strange developments in the background stellar distortions within the Shackleton Expanse, and has petitioned Starfleet to allocate several starships to the region in order to gain more information, as well as to show the flag this far into the frontier. To this end, the Fearless is one of four vessels that have been sent into the Shackleton Expanse, alongside the starships Venture, Thunderchild, and Bellerophon.

Your immediate mission is to escort a convoy of twelve supply vessels from Narendra Station to a small research outpost deep within the Shackleton Expanse. Because the exploration is a joint concern with the Klingons, the Fearless will be accompanied by a Klingon cruiser, the K'Vort-class bird-of-prey IKS MupwI' under the command of Captain Akul. The Fearless's state-of-the-art sensor suite should help the convoy to avoid navigational hazards, while it and the MupwI' ensure that the civilian ships reach their destination. The MupwI' has also undergone a sensor suite refit while docked at Narendra Station, but the station's engineering teams have expressed concerns that the Klingons have been having problems with the new, sensitive equipment.

INTRO SCENE:
You and your ship are currently docked at Narendra Station, having just arrived within the last few days after spending the last few weeks in transit from Earth. We begin with a pre-story sequence, so feel free to stretch your characters' legs around on the station, get to know each other, maybe learn more about this area of space and your place in it. At the Captain's discretion (or mine, whichever comes first), we will progress to the next Scene, and start the mission proper. The above background information should be known to pretty much everyone.

Note that this is the first Living Campaign mission, so try not to go reading up on those in order to avoid spoilers.

Ensign Heather Carter
Flight Control Officer
Location: Narendra Station - Astrometrics

Heather never really cared much for being on board stations. If a ship could be thought of as a nimble mosquito, the station was basically the lumbering bumblebee, vulnerable to even the most sluggish of attacks and virtually incapable of maneuvering away from them. Any battle on board one of these death traps was simply a matter of ammunition and time.

She stood at an Astrometrics terminal, analyzing star maps and running cursory scans of the planned route for the upcoming escort mission. She wasn't looking for anything in particular, just an awareness of local phenomena, nearby outposts, stations and whatnot, ships to expect (and maybe a few not to), anything that might be useful should anything unusual or violent happen. Escorts weren't usually needed on perfectly safe routes, after all. Better safe than sorry.

She was really more worried about what to expect on board. She wasn't the lowest on the staff, but as an Ensign, pretty much everyone she was going to be working with had authority over her. Not that she had any problem with authority, but it left her feeling fairly insecure and small. The possibility of combat also fermented in her gut. The last time she was in a fight could only have ended worse if she hadn't been able to escape it. To be in charge of maneuvering in the middle of a firefight... well, best not to think about that. It may not even happen.

Finishing up her automated script, Heather left the computer to it's task. She'd check the data after leaving port. It was about time for lunch, so she left for the Mess Hall. She gathered her turkey sandwich from the replicator and strategically chose her seat at a fairly large empty table, facing the entrance. If any of her new shipmates entered, they would hopefully see her there and infer the invitation. It wasn't as if she even had the authority to decline.

OOC: What should I roll for the Astrometrics scans? Also, what are we using for rolling?

Are you rolling an Astrometrics scan (ie: actively using the starbase's sensors to probe an area of space), or just calling up previously-collected data (maps, the route, local outposts/etc.)? If the former, it would probably be Control/Science, while the latter would probably be Control/Conn. You'd do the former if you wanted to try to discover anything new and novel about the sector, and the latter if you're accessing information that's already been gathered by someone here at the starbase. Difficulty for the former will be 3, difficulty for the latter will be either 0 or 1. A 0 roll means you get the basic info that isn't classified, a 1 would mean you get the basic info and might draw a conclusion that maybe someone else missed / that someone wants to keep hidden. Just lemme know what you'd prefer.

RAW also states that the player can suggest a combination for their roll, since there are a ton of different ways to approach a problem. Going forward, feel free to roll up whichever you think is the most appropriate Attribute/Discipline for the given task spontaneously... will save time in a PbP and allow for the character to have more flexibility in how they approach things.

As for the roller I'd say use Orokos with the N#xd20 syntax to show us the result of each individual d20. Am I dumb or has Orokos taken away the ability to generate a link to a specific roll though? If that's the case, I'm open for suggestions on an alternative... I haven't done PbP in quite awhile.

Sure thing. On the harder Astrometrics roll, Narendra Station can assist you with a roll on its Sensors/Science (we'll say 10 + 3). I'll whip up a statblock for the station and stick it in the second post.

Commander Baws Rinaro
First Officer
Location: Narenda Station, Mess Hall

Commander Rinaro walked through halls with his head buried in a PADD. He had been in his bunk all morning looking over the new crew roster, but grew quite frustrated with solitude. Baws knew the crew manifest forwards and backwards already, but he took his work very seriously; Baws was a people-person, and the First Officer role gave him direct responsibility for the crew. This was what led Baws to winding his way through corridors to the mess hall, as he found he always worked better when surrounded by people. Sometimes his highly social nature could be a distraction, but Rinaro reasoned that the best way to learn about this new crew would be to meet them.

Arriving at the mess hall, Baws made his way to a replicator to order a mug of Pyrellian ginger tea and an uttaberry crêpe. Looking about the room, he noted a table of Klingon station personnel jovially exchanging stories towards the rear of the room. Baws quite liked Klingons as a matter of course, but he would not be serving on a Klingon ship. Best to find some of his own crew. Other tables had scattered station personnel as well. A pair of Tellarites engaging in a sporting debate, a Trill talking with a trio of humans, and a few others. Spotting Ensign Carter, Rinaro smiled and went over to join her. While joining a random bevy of crewmen would be a bit odd for a newly assigned XO, Carter would be a member of the bridge crew of the USS Fearless. Commander Rinaro would need to get to know her capabilities and demeanor and this seemed like an excellent opportunity for introductions. Setting his tray down along with his PADD, Baws extended a hand with a friendly smile.

"Commander Rinaro. Would you mind if I join you, Ensign? I've been looking over these crew reports all morning and I'm afraid my eyes might pop out of my head if I stare at a PADD any longer."

Lieutenant Junior Grade Latara Mabrin
Chief of Security
Location: Narenda Station, Mess Hall

As Mabrin walked through the station's corridors, he couldn't help but feel somewhat tense. The Klingons were good people and meant well, but he'd already had to break up two fights that'd gotten carried away this morning. His side still hurt from accidentally getting elbowed by the MupwI''s XO, though at least he was very apologetic. On the upside, other than that the Fearless' time at Narenda had been uneventful. As he walked into the mess hall, he noticed Commander Rinaro and Ensign Carter; grabbing some hasperat (Starfleet replicators always made them too bland by default) and a plomeek tea from the replicator he walked over. "Am I interrupting, sir?"

Astrometrics Scan: 2#1d20 1 14

Looks like 1 success on pulling up old data, and 4 on the Astrometrics Scan with the Station assisting. Can I bank Momentum?

Carter breathed deep. This was her first direct encounter with Senior Staff of a ship she was assigned to since the Golden Goose. A lot rode on this. She needed to be very familiar with their habits and personalities this time around.

She was sure she couldn't endure another incident, and being well-woven into the crew was one of many ways she intended to ensure that she wouldn't need to.

Besides, she was Bridge-Crew now. Day shift, personal quarters, authority, to an extent anyway. Now was as good a time as any for a new start. She put down her PADD, saving the familiar comfort of Astrometric Analysis for later.

Carter looked to her newly arrived superior. Oh wow, a Bolian. She'd never met one in person, but always had the impression that they seemed approachable enough. Even friendly, at least as far as a generalization can go.

"Yes, of course sir, please take a seat. I was just doing some preliminary analysis of our projected course. I will be ready to report immediately upon taking my station."

Commander Baws Rinaro
First Officer
Location: Narendra Station, Mess Hall

Baws seated himself, cutting into the uttaberry crêpe delicately and taking a satisfying bite. "Excellent, good to hear that you're getting settled in. I suspect all the bridge officers are hard at work. It's always this way with a new crew - everybody so concerned with getting a head start." He leaned in a bit conspiratorially before continuing, "Of course, this ship is far from new. The Fearless has some stories to tell, I'll say. Quite an amazing ship. I envy you, really. I always wanted to get the chance to fly an Excelsior. A truly classic configuration! I look forward to your report, Ensign. I'm sure it will be most informative!" The Commander spoke about a mile a minute, but he gave the distinct impression that every word was completely earnest.

As the young Security Chief approached, Rinaro extended a hand in greeting again. "Of course, of course. Lieutenant Latara, I believe? Please, do join us!" Baws was obviously enjoying the opportunity to hold court with his new crewmates.

Captain Jason Blackstone
Commanding Officer
Location: Narendra Station, Officer's Club

Captain Blackstone sat at a table, an untouched drink in front of him, with his back to the corner and every exit in his field of view. Naturally he wasn't expecting any trouble, nor did he expect to have to use the phaser on his hip. It was just the habit of his upbringing that he never felt the need to unlearn. Instead his attention was on the PADD in his hand, as he looked over the briefings on his senior officers and bridge crew one last time. A ship is only as good as its crew, and he wanted to know that crew as well as he could before setting out.

Commander Rinaro, his new first officer. An unlikely background for someone hoping to make captain, but it takes all kinds. Rinaro certainly seemed to be a people person, and that was invaluable in a first officer. Jason certainly won't have to worry about Baws being a loose cannon, but he wondered how the Bolian would handle combat when it inevitably happened.

Lieutenant Commander Konin, chief scientist. An unremarkable career up until the incident on Sindic III, where he disobeyed a direct order. Of course, Jason was no stranger to that experience himself, but not assassinating someone is probably a much more clear-cut situation that what happened with the Crystal Shard. And again, Jason was no stranger to taking violent action when necessary. Would Algar be able to hold up when it came to that?

Doctor Paron, chief medical officer. Badly injured in a surprise attack by the Cardassians, and now this was apparently her first assignment after her recovery. Between that and her inability to join with the Trill, it seemed like she was undaunted by setbacks. Jason hoped she kept that track record going, while at the same time wondering how she'll react when she hit her breaking point.

Lieutenant Kadek, chief engineer. Clearly talented, and seemingly able to keep cool under pressure. Jason had a good feeling about this Iks... Isk... well, it was Commander Rinaro's problem to figure out how to pronounce that name.

Lieutenant JG Mabrin, chief of security. Wait, Bajoran, make that Lieutenant JG Latara. Apparently he grew up doing the sort of thing Jason was raised to be prepared to do, but the Romulan war never came. No need to worry if Latara could handle violence, just whether he could accept peaceful solutions. Or interact with Cardassians.

Finally, Ensign Carter, helm. There was barely a need to read this dossier, as Jason had hand-picked Heather to pilot the Fearless. Her talents were wasted as a shuttle pilot, and as the sole survivor of a Romulan ambush, he couldn't help but feel empathetic.

Of course, it was one thing to have the pieces laid out before him. The real question is how they will mesh together on duty. Time will tell.

"Chapter Four: The Eeyal."

Fingers tapped across the conductive surface of the PADD, and with each tap, letters and words; words telling of a journey across the lavender waters of Trill's ocean. They stopped after only a few sentences, and Kollen put the PADD down on the table. No. Not now, she decided. This can wait. Right now, you have your duties.

She tapped the device's screen, pausing to look at her right hand. The synthetic flesh did its job well-- it was just like using her natural arm, and did a fine job of hiding the webwork of alloys, circuits, and mechanisms that replaced what she had lost on the Lovell four years ago. To Kollen, it served as a reminder of the perils her career brought upon her.

But that's why I joined Starfleet. To save lives.

The writing program on the PADD vanished with Kollen's touch, replaced with a copy of her deployment orders and a list of the medical personnel she'd be working with on the Fearless. It was best to get to know who she would be working with, her mother always said; looking up, she saw a human, a Bajoran, and a Bolian at an otherwise empty table. She picked her tray up and headed over, sitting beside the human. "Err... hello, everyone," she said. "I hope you don't mind. The conversation seems a bit more livelier over here."

OOC: How common-knowledge, at this point, are the destruction of the Enterprise (at Veridian III) and the Odyssey (in the first contact with the Dominion)?

Heather nodded, with some relief, to the First Officer. Looks like she got lucky this time. So many Seconds-in-Command liked to strut around as wannabe Rikers, it was a rare treat to meet a personable one.

"From what I've heard, Commander, you're quite an accomplished pilot yourself. I imagine you've flown a few vessels that would turn any hotshot green with envy."

Her eyes darted to then from Latara. Another unknown, and security chiefs were notorious sticklers. She wasn't sure what to make of a Bajoran in that role. They had a reputation for fanaticism, at least in religion. How might that translate into duty?

"I hope the state of the crew is up to your standards, Lieutenant. I imagine you already know this, but I am well-trained in security protocols, so if you require any extra assistance from crew in those concerns, I am happy to step up."

She glanced again to her Commanding Officer.

"Provided, of course, it doesn't interfere with my primary duties."

Carter shifted a bit to make room.

"Dr. Paron, of course. Glad to meet you."

Paron was of a high enough rank that Heather typically would have felt intimidated in her presence, but doctors always seemed to have a very different air of authority around them. Stern, but genuinely caring. They were above the pomp of commanding a starship. The good ones, anyway. Besides, if you can't trust your doctor, who can you trust?

She tried, really tried, her hardest to avoid glancing at the doctor's arms. She knew from her research into the senior staff. Her security training gave her sufficient database access for some decently in-depth background checks and service records that the typical Ensign wouldn't have.

Still, she couldn't recall which arm it had been that was replaced, and she was desperately curious to see if she could spot the artificial. Was it stronger? Armored? Holstering a weapon? No, that last one was ridiculous.

She realized she had been silent a little too long.

"I uh, was glad to hear you had returned to duty."

drat, awkward. They had never even met. Still a nice sentiment. Maintain eye contact. Don't look at the arm.

"Have you been aboard the Fearless yet? Commander Rinaro was just telling me about it's history. The ship is older than me and has seen a lot more action. It's more than a little humbling to sit behind her helm.

I heard a rumor that she even has an EMH installed, although I can't imagine who would want to be worked on by an artificial doctor."

Internally, Carter facepalmed. Hard.

There he is!
Lieutenant Iskander Kadek
Chief Engineer
Location: USS Fearless, Main Engineering

It was never a dull day in engineering, but the hours right before shipping out were always particularly hectic. Lists were checked and rechecked, supplies stored, pulled out, checked and then stored again. Once they shipped out there might be days, weeks or months without proper resupply depending on the whims of the stars and fates. It was always important to make sure everything needed was on-board and properly stowed away. Luckily, he knew the old Fearless and her moods.

He delegated some of the supply tasks to the junior engineers, before starting a final diagnostic himself. The new Captain, Blackstone, had a bit of a reputation as a... Military man. For his purposes, Iskander interpreted that to mean that Captain Blackstone was going to be a hardass. Better to keep engineering on the straight and narrow and let the hammer fall on one of the other departments. If everything came back green, he'd deliver the news to the captain.

Iskander will run a final pre-flight diagnostic on the ship to make sure we are ready to depart, see if any systems are malfunctioning. In particular, the new sensor systems seem like a possible point of failure.

Trying to pick up news and rumors around the station and the surrounding space.

A portly Tellarite (surely a redundant phrase) sidles up to Algar from behind the bar, carrying a plate of oskoid as requested. After serving it, he pulls a clean frosted glass from the well and begins pouring Algar a beer directly from the tap -- surely an oddity on a Federation starbase.

The bartender reacts to Algar's question with a bit of a snort. "New to the Shackleton, I take it?" he grunts, a sarcastic smile forming at the edges of his mouth. He finishes expertly filling the beer glass, tosses out a paper coaster with the Federation logo on it, and sets the beer down in front of the science officer. "Well, commander, let me be the first to congratulate you on being posted to one of Starfleet's most exciting areas of space -- at least, if you believe the travel pamphlets." The Tellarite pulls out a rag and begins idly cleaning an unused area of the bar, a maneuver that may seem a bit cliche, if not a bit quaint in the twenty-fourth century. "Don't get me wrong, some of the stories I overhear from the Bellerophon and Venture's science teams can be very interesting and unusual. We're sitting on the edge of explored space, with nothing but the great wide open beyond. But here on Narendra?" The bartender's attention is broken by a scuffle between two Klingon officers in the far corner of the establishment; an older Klingon officer has apparently just tossed a wide hook at a younger subordinate, knocking him flat. The Tellarite turns back to you, his face looking glib. "The most excitement we see around here is when the Klingons get a bit too much bloodwine in 'em."

He tosses a glance at the two Klingons in the corner -- the superior officer, apparently having proved his point, has sat back down at a table with his compatriots and has resumed gulping a tankard of bloodwine. The younger hasn't been knocked out cold, but he is slowly coming back up to his feet, a thin trickle of pink blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.

"Those two are from the MupwI'," the bartender says quietly. "Not sure how good your skill with the Klingon language is, but MupwI' means 'hammer'. A fitting name for a warship, and it seems to fit her crew well, too." The bartender finishes wiping with his rag and wrings it out over a low sink behind the bar. "Hammers can be a bit ungainly, but they strike hard. At least their Captain seems to have a level head on his shoulders."

@Captain Blackstone: The altercation between the two Klingon officers -- one of them seemingly of command rank -- has probably happened only a couple tables over from where you're currently sitting.

Current Momentum Pool: 1

The starbase's computer chews on the request for several minutes as Ensign Carter expertly collates a report of all previously-collected data on the region, conveniently sorted by relevance and formatted for readability. As an addendum to the report, Carter is also able to take advantage of the starbase's advanced long-range sensor array to pull a raw data dump directly onto a PADD, unsorted and uncommented.

Once Carter has time to look over the information downloaded onto her PADD, she will be able to put together a more complete picture of the Shackleton Expanse than even the mission briefing may mention. Overall, the sensor report confirms the general overview for the region: the Shackleton Expanse is a vast, uncharted area of space, relatively dense with star systems and various other stellar phenomena. Most intriguing seems to be the navigational hazards that plague this part of space. Pouring over the raw data, Ensign Carter might be reminded of similar navigational hazards in the Badlands near Cardassian space -- the area abounds with gravitational anomalies and electromagnetic eddies. Taken as a whole, the stellar phenomena seems to permeate the entire region of space, making it no wonder that the nearby Klingons, Romulans, and Federation have never before made an earnest effort in colonizing the area. It would also explain the necessity of the sophisticated sensor suite that has recently been outfitted on the Fearless and other Starfleet ships operating out of Narendra Station.

As she glances through the raw data, she notices something else: decaying warp signatures seem to be crisscrossing the expanse, often drifting along the gravitational eddies like driftwood floating on an ocean. The number and overall age of the warp signatures would indicate that the Expanse is much more active than it would seem: not only does she detect what appear to be Starfleet and Klingon warp signatures, but an unusually high amount of unidentifiable readings as well.

At any rate, Carter is able to get a better intuitive feel for the type of navigational hazards that will be facing her as she pilots the Fearless -- assuming the ship's new sensor array is up to the job of keeping track of those eddies.

OOC: How common-knowledge, at this point, are the destruction of the Enterprise (at Veridian III) and the Odyssey (in the first contact with the Dominion)?

Both incidents have been talked about at all levels of the fleet. The former is much more public news, considering any ship named Enterprise carries with it some legendary status, Picard's near-universal fame (or infamy, depending on who you ask) notwithstanding. The specifics of how it went down might not be very well known though, aside from the fact that the ship was destroyed by a rogue Klingon vessel... there are some rumors (and really only rumors to anyone except those at the highest level) that the ghost of Captain Kirk was somehow also involved, but that's more lower-decks gossip than anything.

The destruction of the Odyssey is talked about in whispers. People are worried, and so far Starfleet has kept their leaps sealed while the upper levels determine the nature of the threat.

Iskander will run a final pre-flight diagnostic on the ship to make sure we are ready to depart, see if any systems are malfunctioning. In particular, the new sensor systems seem like a possible point of failure.

A difficulty 1 roll for either Control/Engineering or Insight/Engineering... the former is appropriate if you're doing a by-the-book diagnostic, the latter if you're being creative and looking for hiccups that more orthodox engineers might miss. The Fearless can assist you with her Computers/Engineering roll.

As mentioned, go ahead and make appropriate rolls in your posts whenever you are undertaking a Task, just to save time on the back-and-forth. Use the Attribute/Discipline that you think is most appropriate given what you're trying to do.

"Thank you sir, though I'm only barely a Lieutenant junior grade," Mabrin replied as he took his seat. "In some ways Ensign Carter is more experienced than I am. Turning towards her, he nodded. "I don't have any reason to doubt the competence of you or the rest of the crew, and I have no reason to believe that you will give me one in the coming mission. I'm sure the Commander feels the same way," he said, glancing at Commander Rinaro. Mabrin had of course been briefed on his crewmates, but found that of all of them the gregarious Bolian was the hardest to read; they'd all had their trials by fire, but it was a very difficult notion for him to grasp that someone who'd nearly had their entire family and social circle killed by the Cardassians could still be as open and generous as he was.

Carter's psychological evaluation at least made sense to him; a mix of survivor guilt and a shaken sense of self-confidence were to be expected when your ship gets blown away.

As the doctor approached, Mabrin roused himself from his thoughts. "Ah, good afternoon Doctor!"

His attention returning to the Doctor, Baws noticed that Carter seems to be a bit flummoxed. Considering her recent history, it's no surprise she might be a bit overwhelmed by all this. If he understood correctly, that same history was exactly why their new captain had requested her. He wrote a mental note to talk this over with Captain Blackstone when they meet. In the meantime, best to make sure she knows that everyone is on her side. Stepping in, Baws addressed Dr. Paron. "Have you served on an Excelsior-class before, Doctor? The ship is in a cooperative mood as he does everything by the book. No need for a "Creative Solution" while in port, he would save such endeavors for when they were needed. The Fearless was a dependable sort, rarely required that sort of intervention. He runs through the diagnostics easily, preparing a final report that he would take to the captain. He downloads the results onto his PADD, he would review it as he made his way to the station.

Alright, I had 2d20 + 1d20 assistance, with target numbers 17 (12 + 5 for Control + Engineering for a standard diagnostic) and 13 (Computers + Engineering). Since I have Technical Expertise I could re-roll one of those d20's but there isn't a reason to do so. I have 3 successes:

Control + Engineering (TN 17) w/ Assistance (TN 13): 2d20+1d20 [2d20=17, 10] [1d20=7]

Carter's PADD chirped as the finished Astrometric data arrived. A blessed distraction from her social blundering with the doctor.

She gave it a brief glance, frowning a bit at the results. She expected to uncover something missed by the survey team, she wouldn't be doing her job if she didn't, but these gravimetric distortions along with the odd warp signatures, this would need some serious attention before departure.

She made a note tagged to the data to include the Security Chief and Chief Engineer when submitting her final report. Maybe they could make more sense out of exactly what she was seeing. She didn't relish the idea of flying blind into choppy waters.

She went ahead and forwarded the raw data to Lieutenant Kadek, copied to the First Officer, with a message.

"Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but something odd came up on a scan I ran of our course. When you have the time, you might want to take a look at some of this, particularly some of these warp signatures.

Seems like this place might be uncharted to us, but is home sweet home to someone else. I'm probably just being paranoid, but believe me, we really are better off safe than sorry."

The results of the diagnostic are exhaustive -- though the shipboard computer might not be as fast or up-to-date as the fancy new bio-neural technology in use on the Intrepid-class, the Fearless's diagnostic systems are still more than capable.

The diagnostic report paints a pretty picture of a ship that serves as a perfect example of why the Excelsior-class has proven to be one of Starfleet's most successful spaceframes of all time. The diagnostic reveals that all systems are operating within nominal parameters, even those new highly-sensitive sensor systems that were recently installed at McKinley Station. Lieutenant Kadek is able to notice that there is a slight bottleneck anomaly in the interface between the sensor system and the ship's computer, likely as a result of grafting state-of-the-art technology onto something that is decidedly less than cutting edge. The anomaly likely wouldn't have any effect on the performance of the sensors, but it is probably something to keep in mind for the future.

He goes over the report as he walks, frowning at the integration of the new sensors onto the old systems. A hack job, but it couldn't be helped. Not quickly anyway, not in the time they were going to be at dock. The crew would have to keep it in mind. He gave a slight wince as it occurred to him that if the Fearless was having trouble integrating in this technology, he couldn't imagine what their Klingon counterparts were going through.

Narenda station itself was nice, but he didn't like spending too much time off the ship. The Fearless could be the jealous sort when it was in a mood, but there was one thing that the station would have and the ship wouldn't. As he entered the Mess Hall he made a quick detour to the bar, waving over one of the bartenders.

"I'd like a bottle of red Brem, real alcohol. No rush."

His order placed he glanced around, spotting the captain talking to what seemed like one of the Bridge Crew. He didn't want to interrupt, so instead scanned around to see if he could pull out any other faces. It seemed like most of the bridge crew was already there.

Commander Baws Rinaro

Baws made more mental notes for himself as he smiled politely to Dr. Paron. That's two officers dealing with a level of trauma, albeit quite differently. The good doctor seemed to be handling her situation quite nicely, at least outwardly, but there was no shame in admitting anger, pain, or grief at such a loss. The officers selected for this assignment were all bound to be highly skilled, and Baws had reviewed their records and been impressed. Baws, true to his nature, strongly believed they deserved the chance to prove themselves on this mission, but duty required him to note any potential concerns with the crew so that they could be monitored or addressed as necessary. This was a large part of the reason that Baws liked to dive right into getting to know the crew - particularly department heads. This information would be heavily pertinent in the days and weeks to come, particularly if they came across any difficult situations within the expanse. All of this made him look forward to meeting the Captain at long last.

As his PADD in turn alerted him to the message from Carter, Rinaro nodded to her. "Understood and acknowledged, Ensign." He glanced at the PADD, giving a cursory review to the findings. "There's quite a bit to parse through, but based on what I'm seeing here I'm looking forward to it. We'll have to run some additional analyses to verify the findings, but this is good work." He gave her a friendly smile before setting the PADD back down. He would have to make sure to review the findings prior to meeting with Captain Blackstone.

Ensign Heather Carter
Flight Controller
Location: Narendra Station - Mess Hall

Carter listened carefully as she eavesdropped on Captain Blackstone and Lieutenant Commander Konin exchange brief, tense conversation. That wasn't good. He was as tough as his profile made him look, and she had a record of clashing with a higher-up as well. She hoped that her low rank made her unworthy of that sort of scrutiny in his eyes.

"Those are just the broad strokes, sir. I'll include a detailed brief in my official report, I just wanted to give Engineering a heads-up."

She stowed her PADD in her carry-on bag.

"As much as I'm enjoying meeting everyone, I think I should get my quarters and station arranged. The default flight-panel configurations are fine for trainees, but if you want to be efficient, they require a good deal of customization. I'll see all of you on the Bridge, have a good meal. I know we're not on duty, but if anyone needs me, I'll be on the Bridge for most of the evening."

Carter briskly gathered up her things and left the Mess Hall. She was still flustered over her reaction to the doctor, but she'd be over it soon enough and with time, won't even think about the cybernetics. That sort of thing didn't really bother her anyway, the curiosity was just overwhelming in the moment.

As Heather strode though the corridors of the crowded station, a discomforting sense of agoraphobia crept into her mind. Big open spaces like this meant being a big target, and in space, that was a situation that could get really bad, really fast. She knew that stations like this had reinforced shields and some very mean phaser cannons, but none of that meant much if you couldn't weave through strike patterns of photon torpedos, and sometimes, it really just took one...

She felt an almost palpable sense of relief as she passed through the docking port of the Fearless. A starship wasn't necessarily any safer than a space station, but here, she was in control of the motion of the ship. Better that she hold the keys to her own fate than someone else. She stepped on the turbolift and rode it to the Bridge.

Station crew were scattered about, calibrating relays and running various diagnostics on the Bridge systems. This was the hub of the ship. The War Room. How insane it felt that someone had decided to give her a seat at the big table, but they had, and she would die before she disappointed them for it. That was probably literally true.

She took her seat in front of the navigation controls and uploaded her personal configuration. The factory settings did the job fine, but for tricky maneuvers, millimeters of distance between buttons could be the difference between evading a phaser spread and taking the full brunt of it. The better she did her job, the less work everyone else would end up having to do. Her mind always leapt to the possibility of combat, especially after the Golden Goose. For awhile, she was obsessed with it, taking Security training every opportunity she had. It tended to bleed into her instincts as a pilot.

She pulled up the raw data from her scans. "Computer, Flight Controller's Log, date tagged for today, send to the First Officer, Chief Engineer, and Security Chief."

She wondered if she should copy the captain as well, but he looked like the By-the-Book type who would dress her down for even slight deviations in protocol, so he would probably be happy to receive it distilled from his First Officer should the need arise. It wasn't as if he could read every report himself, and she wasn't anyone special as to warrant his direct attention on such a simple matter. She didn't want to warrant his direct attention at all.

"Preliminary analysis on the Shackleton Expanse has revealed some unexpected findings. Station staff did an acceptable job, however, I was able to pull a little extra information that was missed in the initial scans.

Engineering should note that there are an unusual number of gravitational anomalies and electromagnetic disturbances that could negatively impact engines and other shipboard systems. The range and power of these anomalies appears to be fluctuating and unpredictable. Recommend reinforcing shields and internally shielding sensitive components before disembarking.

Perhaps it will sound somewhat hyperbolic, but I am forced to draw a direct comparison between the Shackleton Expanse and the Badlands. Giving the Voyager-Marquis disappearances, this is particularly alarming. I have also detected a large number of residual warp signatures in the Expanse. Many are Starfleet and Klingon, but a large number bear no signature in the Federation Database. Their decay shows that they were made rather recently, and seem to crisscross the sector far more than expected. It seems that the Shackleton Expanse is much more active than current estimates. Recommend Security remain alert and all crew be armed at all times. I can't tell you who all is out there, but I can tell you that it is more than we expect."

Carter paused, looking over the data once more to ensure she missed nothing.

"Computer, append all relevant scan data and save it to the ship's log along with this report."

She thought for a moment. It wouldn't be good for this data to exist only aboard one ship and Narendra Station. Besides, it was data that Starfleet scientists would probably love to chew on for awhile, and just maybe they'd find something in time for it to be useful to her.

"Send the raw data to Starfleet Command as well."

He starts tapping a few buttons on his PADD, sending his final report diagnostics to the captain. It was perhaps underhanded to wait until he was nearby, then send an electronic message rather than personally delivering the data a short distance... Commander Baws Rinaro
First Officer
Location: Narendra Station - Mess Hall

Baws acknowledged the departure of the Conn Officer with a nod and a brief, "Ensign." He finished his meal soon afterwards, and eventually excused himself in turn. Time to get to the ship and prepare for his meeting with Captain Blackstone. The Bolian made his way to the ready room leisurely. He planned to arrive somewhat early, but he still had quite a bit of time to review these findings and finalize his notes on his first meeting with some of the senior staff. The captain would surely want to hear his perspectives on the new crew, after all.

Checking the time, Baws decided to start a bit of analysis on the warp signatures from Ensign Carter. Inputting the information, he began. "Computer, copy data and isolate unknown warp signatures, eliminating all Starfleet, Klingon, and Romulan signatures. Display based on rate of decay and determine relative ages." From there, Commander Rinaro tried, as best as he could, to identify from which section of the expanse these unknown signatures are most likely to originate, and where they are most likely going.

He looked at this as he would if he were piloting these unknown ships, taking into account the gravitational eddies and other anomalies. If he were behind the console of a ship piloting along this route, how would he try to avoid them? He examined the somewhat indirect routes indicated by the signatures and tried to fill in the blanks based on his own piloting skills. Surely it wouldn't be exact based on the decayed nature of the data, but it might yield a bit more information about their identities.

Isolate Warp Signatures: 2#1d20 13 11

I'm thinking this sounds like Reason + CONN, which would be 13. Basing this off the description under CONN of how you use reason: "Reason, to plot a course through a difficult environment, or to determine their location or the location of someone else based on available data." I'm not sure what you'd want me to use, though, let me know if you feel it should be something different. I'm also hoping that my Helm Operations focus might come into play here as I try to fill in the blanks a little using my own understanding of piloting. But I'm still a bit new to this system so if that doesn't apply let me know.
