1 Kobayashi's Dragon Maid KyoAni knocking it out of the park again, simultaneously being the funniest and most heartwarming show of the year.
2 The Eccentric Family 2 I liked S1, but being able to hit the ground running without all of the introductory stuff made S2 that much better.
3 Interviews with Monster Girls A lovely show about girls coping with their 'disabilities.' I really liked how the science teacher mentored the demis, he was super earnest but the show never got too sappy.
4 Tsurezure Children An actual show about actual romances somehow? All of the characters had funny quirks and not only were all of the couples extremely cute, they bounced off each other in hilarious ways. I'm not sure if they could have filled 22 min eps as well as the 12 they had, but I don't care because what we got was awesome.
5 Sakura Quest I had to put one of the spiritual successors to Hanasaku Iroha on here, it seems like there are a million "cute girls doing work things" shows these days but I went with SQ. It was the one I kept going back to despite them giving it a slow burn over 25 eps, and it even managed to stick the ending!

I spent ~1/52nd of this year watching anime, yet somehow I still haven't watched a bunch of the shows that have shown up on many of the thread's top 5s. I'm sure some of them would make it to my 'real' top 5 but these are my picks for shows I've finished.

This has been mentioned a few times now, but it is totally ok and even desirable as it produces higher quality data without the baggage of anchoring effects.

Best of 2017:

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid - Heartfelt, funny and adorable in equal measure, this anime just never stops making you feel good. The cast are all fantastic and likeable and its consistently excellent from beginning to end. Kobayashi, Torhu and Kanna make one of the all time great anime families and I'm confident that this will go down as a classic of its genre.

Saga of Tanya The Evil - Ever felt like an anime was made specifically for you? This was it for me. What could have been so cringey turned into my favorite show of the year. Tanya is an amazingly entertaining character and the whole show remains consistently fun and smart throughout.

Made in Abyss - While the middle episodes weren't that great, the opening and ending episodes are drat near perfect. One of the many things that made me cry this year and one of the best out of those.

Princess Principal - I fell in love with this show instantly and while it doesn't always keep up the quality of its first two episodes, for what we got it was amazing. And I think it really stands out as being really goddamn smart for an anime. The writing, minute detailing and world building here are all top notch. I love the characters and the world and while I hope for a season 2, what we got was a slam dunk imo.

My Hero Academia Season 2 - I actually got semi-obsessed with MHA because of just how great this second season was. It really was a top tier shounen show with several of the best moments of the year and somehow managed to be a massive improvement on the already excellent first season.

Honorable mentions:

The first 2 thirds of Kado
Konosuba
Girls Last Tour
Attack on Titan
Tsurezure Children
Kakegurui
Little Witch Academia

You know its been a good year when shows that good didn't make the cut. Also I'm super behind on the recent season so a lot of great stuff probably didn't make it for me.

Worst of the Year:

Vatican Miracle Examiner - So bad its amazing. For at least the first 4 episodes. If you're into "so bad its good" I'd recommend it. Hitlers frozen balls are a plot-point. I'm not joking.

Wouldn't say these are necessarily the best, but these were certainly the shows I enjoyed the most. These are in no particular order::

Konosuba S2 - Was surprised by how much I enjoyed the first season and this one was no different. I won't say the gags were super original but the execution, especially the acting, really made this a fun watch! Hopefully this gets a third season.

MMO Junkie - A fun, easy watch with a likeable cast of characters. I also felt that it wrapped up quite nicely, though if they could keep the quality of the first I definitely wouldn't mind a second season, at least if the material was there! While it's overused to describe shows/books/etc... think the term "comfort food" could be applied to this quite accurately.

Natsume Yuujincho 6 - Been a fan since the first season and am happy to see it continuing with such consistency.

Hozuki's Coolheadedness Season 2 - I really enjoyed season 1 and found 2 to be just as good. The characters are amusing and most of the gags work pretty well in my opinion! Looking forward to season 2 part 2 - even if the subs seem really lazy at times. I could add more, but it doesn't seem to generate lots of discussion. Suffice to say, I think it's worth the watch!

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond - I worked my way through both seasons of BBB fairly recently and was very happy to have done so. I liked the show's style quite a bit, found the characters amusing and likeable, thought the acting was good (though I haven't seen the dub yet) and enjoyed the animation. My biggest complaint about S2, though, is probably the OP.

Garo: Vanishing Line - I avoided this at first because I'm not into tokusatsu stuff all that much but really liked the show after giving it a chance. A good central cast of characters (especially Sophie and Sword), consistent pacing and some nice fights have made this a fun watch. I'm hoping the second part of the season is just as good. This also felt like a bit of a throwback to me.

I gave some other stuff a shot, but I tend not to stick with shows that don't hook me after a few episodes (or one in some cases).

Super late edit, but looking through this thread made me realize that Eccentric Family 2 was, in fact, 2017. While not as good as the first, I still really liked the second quite a bit. Just wished it had been more fleshed out.

Let's be fair now, The Kooky Exploits of they, whose names could be abbreviated into Jojo has been accumulating crazy, obsessive, cult-like fans for quite a while. I mean, yeah: The 2012 anime was the starting point of the "poo poo went bananas" and the 2014 adaptation of Stardust Crusaders basically slammed the "Let's never shut up about Jojo, ever again" pedal to the metal, but let's not pretend that this is a new development. Like, unless we're talking One Piece, Dragon Ball, or Attack on Titan fandoms, yeah, it's pretty hard to top the Cult of Araki.

As one of them, allow me to say the JoJo fandom is 200% arse in many different ways, including ones that contradict each other.

That said, calling JoJo a battle shonen is pretty wide of the mark in this day and age (I'd say Stone Ocean is the first real foray into it being more of a seinen, which would make it a seinen longer than it was shonen now), as is ignoring that MHA has a pretty large, vocal and rabid fandom of its own, especially considering it's also a young manga for how successful it is.

I'm sure that people mean "Battle Manga" in the same way that Bakuman. more or less explained it.

As for MHA fandom, I dunno: After being part of what I consider the two biggest poo poo fandoms (The Spiral and Tool Army) in my mid-to-late-teens, almost every other fandom looks well-behaved in comparison.

Gosh I actually made it in time this year.

1: March Comes In Like A Lion S1 - Easily in the top spot, I had high hopes for this adaption and it delivered 100%.
2: KonoSuba 2 - I don't think it's possible for me to get enough of these characters.
3: Kobayashi's Dragon Maid - More or less tied with KonoSuba actually. Classic case of Kyoani elevating the original work.
4: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen - Watched both seasons this year, first season would have easily been a pick last year as well.
5: Magical Circle Guru Guru - Got a little bit tired of the fast pace near the end but it was still quality. Bonus points for the first opening.

Honorable mention to Kemono Friends in what would be a very close 6th place. I'm sure there will be a few other shows I'll finish that would have been in the running too.

In no real order

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. : I love all these handsome anime boys and girls eating toast and cake
Magical Circle Guru Guru : Super funny, great comedic timing. Some of the episodes are a little too fast paced, but overall a good anime
Recovery of an MMO Junkie : I just really liked the story
MHA Season 2 : GOOD STUFF

Edit: I get one more pick, and I just finished Made in Abyss which I love and "recommend" anonymously online but I wouldn't be caught dead recommending this torture porn to my IRL friends.

I hinted at this in my own post (in which I called Rakugo the best show of the year, hands-down), but I actually put it on hold after the first two or three episodes, because it didn't grab me.

It gets much, much better. Still not as good as S1, IMO, but definitely great.

I think I watched less than ten shows this year so that makes it very easy to vote:

- Recovery of an MMO Junkie: It hit all the right buttons for me: nostalgia, escapism, adult main characters, very optimist, etc. And it wins a thousand points for getting a proper ending (even though it allows for a sequel).
- Konosuba 2: I laughed a lot.
- MHA: I didn't really like how the first season ended (the training exercise was much better) but the second season hit the ground running and never really stopped. It has the one good tournament arc in existence. I can't remember the last time I got so invested in a shounen.
- Saga of Tanya the Evil: I had no idea this was from this year. I watched it, it was fun. That's it.

Just for commentary, I dropped:
Gamers: It was really fun but I think at certain point I just felt I had seen everything the show had to offer so I stopped watching.
March Comes in Like a Lion S1: The sister killed the show for me. Up to that point the show had been good, the relationship with the sisters was amazing... but from the moment his sister appeared my interest lowered by the second until it died. It felt like unnecessary drama.

It's shrine maiden, not shrine maid!
Konosuba 2 - I've seen funny series before, but this show has some sort of combination magic of comedic timing, voice talent, and visual style that just knocks it out of the park. I have never laughed as much and as hard at an anime before.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid - There's just something endearing about this show. It's at its absolute best when it isn't pandering, which is fortunately the bulk of its run. Kyoto Animation rarely disappoints.
My Hero Academia S2 - After season one ended I devoured all of the (mostly great) manga that was out, and as a result season 2 of this show was on my most anticipated for the year. It didn't let down. Deku vs. Todoroki is one of 'those' anime episodes that will stick with me for the rest of my life. BONES is on their A-game for this and Season 3 is on my must-see list for 2018, too. You Say Run/Jet Set Run are the best hype tracks of the year.
Recovery of an MMO Junkie - My wife and I are at a point in our lives where this show just resonated with us. It's a comfortable show to indulge in, and endearingly it gets many of the subtle bits of MMO life down pat. It's not fantastic or anything, and the writing is maybe even a bit weak (OH BOY WHAT A COINCIDENCE), but the characters have more than enough appeal to carry the whole thing home. I'd love to see more.
Little Witch Academia - The storytelling in this one is a bit uneven, but I had that expectation going into it so I wasn't very bothered by it. The characters, once again, hold this one together (even if just barely). Trigger has a fine mastery of the "emotional crit" and hard-hitting, punchy animation. LWA is entertaining for the spectacle, and it's got broad enough appeal to show to basically anyone.

Other stuff:
Gamers! spun tires for a bit and kind of ended on a wet fart. I was entertained by it, but it felt like a show pretending to be another show pretending to be another show. If they continued the story, I would watch it.
Tsurezure Children was cute, thoroughly cute, and had the integrity to visit some relationship situations I've never seen expressed in anime before, which I admire. There just wasn't enough to it to really make my top 5.
Princess Principal had the best first two episodes of any show I watched this season but kind of lost me somewhere along the way, I never finished it. Killer OP tho.

I watched other stuff that I'm omitting, but there you go.
