  Texas has frequently been a battlefield, but never like this - cut off from the support of the full United States thanks to nebulous political machinations, with a rampaging Shine-fuelled army pouring across the Mexican border intent on conquest! Pancho Villa must be stopped, no matter the cost. As Ma Ferguson mobilized the Texas State Guard, things began to go wrong - supplies never arrived at crucial destinations, troops were waylaid en route to battle, and battle-tested soldiers died in the night of mysterious causes. Reluctantly, the embattled Texan governor addressed her full army one cold morning. There were traitors among them - those who had thrown in with the Mexicans, for whatever reason. They needed to be found and eliminated - or Texas would fall to the marauders! As the troops cheered for their leader and swore to hunt down every last turncoat, Ma carefully avoided mentioning that she'd gone and gotten herself some backstabbers in Pancho's camp too. Less than 2 hours to get your Preliminary actions in before the thread closes for Battle phase! As a FYI, the Battle phase will likely be a bit shorter so we can keep things moving briskly (still figuring timeframes out) but I am open to input on deadlines. My current thinking is to have the deadline for Battle actions be 9:30 PM ET (9.5 hours from end of Preliminary) so that I can resolve results and reopen the thread TONIGHT!

 The armies clashed for the first time near the town of Palo Alto, hungry to take the measure of the other side and see who could draw first blood. Shine-glazed eyes met across the battlefield, tension crackling sharply for a number of heartbeats before the Mexicans abruptly charged in, bellowing war cries! The Texans met the assault full-on, standing strong against the onslaught - but for how long? A strident voice cracked through the gun-smoke - it was Ma Ferguson herself! "Let's get 'em, boys! Give 'em hell and kick their rear ends all the way back home!" From there, it all became too confused for anyone to follow - but after a time, both armies withdrew to lick their wounds. Today was just the first skirmish - certainly a costly one, but a skirmish nonetheless - but it would by no means be the last. TEXAS STATE GUARD CASUALTIES  No one died!  This time, it was the Texans' turn to go on the offensive - striking back at one of Villa's strongholds, the town of Guerrero. While the locals took cover best as they could, the Texans charged straight in - but were met in turn by a counter-charge from the Mexicans! Onlookers refused to talk about the aftermath of the battle for weeks afterwards, reportedly far too shell-shocked by what they had seen. One thing was for certain, though - the previous battle had only been a small taste of the full destructive power of each Shine-fueled army. This one was very, very different. He had clearly cracked under the strain of his terrible betrayals being exposed - ranting about who knows what, words tumbling uncontrollably out of his mouth. Ma shrugged nonchalantly, waving them away - high time they actually managed to nail down one of the Mexican spies, thank the good Lord. "Wrap it up, boys. We got more important things to think about than this filthy rotten backstabbin' turncoat!" Just as she turned away, the condemned man suddenly stopped babbling. As his eyes drilled into her, he gave one final wild grin and started laughing. "Got you, one last time." (Sorry for the delay in resolution, the Hawaii missile attack false alarm really freaked me out.) This time, the forces clashed far away from either side's defensive lines. Historians in the years to come would speculate on the Texans' reasons for choosing this battleground - was it to minimize collateral damage, an attempt at outmaneuvering the Mexican strategists, or something else entirely? No-one could say for sure. But once again, each battle party threw itself at the other, and all dissolved into gun-smoke, chaos, and blood...  As the beleaguered Texan defenders rallied at the Alamo, Ma was right there with them just like always. An encouraging word, a slap on the back, a friendly pat on the buttocks - she kept them calm, eyes on the horizon. She knew today would be a fateful day... and she was not disappointed.
