I don’t care if it’s slow so long as what’s happening is good and there’s good character work and Preacher s2 failed miserably on both counts and if we’re in Angelville for the whole of s3 it seems like it’ll be more of the same so I may be out How do you make an adaptation of a road trip series and have it mostly be based around people stuck inside apartments being pissy with each other

Did anybody watch the HBO adaptation of Farenheit 451 with Michael Shannon and Michael B Jordan? It was OK but the attempts at updating it were really bad, trying to have contemporary moral panics like social media and Alexa and Fake News take the place of television in the original makes it feel like a bad episode of Black Mirror, especially when you have the self-defeating irony of being released by a television network itself undermining the point. Also the network infamous for bullying people for pirating its shows has the heroes be people uploading copies of works of fiction to the dark web  On the plus side the movie is basically 80% Shannon and Jordan doing monologues and being intense or moody which is always great even if the rest of the movie doesn't elevate it. And the gag about the only permitted works of fiction being emoji versions of The Bible and Moby Dick was pretty (unintentionally?) funny, I guess.

The ending was really weird in how much it got changed, but the other thing about it I coudn't believe they altered was they get rid of his wife. It's been years since I read the book but I remember his wife being a really vapid gossip-obsessed person. Since they were making this to be about social media, I thought it would have been perfect to put in her in a dumb YouTube star equivalent. It's pretty clear the creators took more than a bit from 1984, too.
