Dumber than farting cartoon bear or "Community episode played straight"? I've got to see this.

I remember hearing someone once describe a sketch parodying the Sam Raimi film A Simple Plan where the guys begin killing each other almost immediately as soon as they find the money and I guess whoever that was was right, that is a really funny idea. Dunno why anyone would want to play it straight though.

This season was uniquely disappointing in that roughly half of the episodes were just straight-up rehashes of the premises of existing episodes which is kind of awful considering the small episode order and long run time. But par for the course it did have one really good episode, I really wish they had more like that and fewer "torturing a person inside a computer forever because it's SAD, don't you feel SAD watching it suffer???" shitfests.

Hell yeah. The first season was great but only the final two episodes were stuff that wasn't already covered by the movie, I'm looking forward to seeing them do something they don't have to conspicuously distance themselves from an existing version of plus getting to finally see those stories on screen.

Chapelle has to deal with having basically the entire country turn on him and think he had lost his mind and gone insane because he walked away from his show and went radio silent without warning even though he's fully explained why since and was IMHO was not only completely justified but showed a lot of character and bravery in doing so, I can see why he might have a unique view on the current outings of Hollywood because of that.

Episode 5, Metalhead, is really good and it's the only one that isn't in some way a rehash of an existing episode's concept, if you're gonna bail at least give that a shot because it's pretty different from anything the show has done. To continue the Twilight Zone comparisons it reminded me a lot of The Invaders and the black and white works really well.

Did you ever see the Christmas special that came out between season 2 and the Netflix seasons? Because I think a lot of my dislike of this season was because so many of the episodes they put out felt like retreads of the ideas they used in that episode only without anything that really justified or was improved by redoing them and especially stretching them out to full episode length.

Have you watched Animaniacs lately? I loved it as a kid and enjoyed revisiting a few classic bits and songs on YouTube but when they added the show to Netflix and I actually sat down to watch an episode I just sat stone faced for 20 minutes because there's a whole lot of chaff surrounding every germ of comedy.

If they were going to resurrect a 90s WB comedy cartoon Freakazoid! would probably be a way better fit for the modern TV landscape since superheroes and wacky internet humor are both big right now and the classic cartoon shorts that Tiny Toons and Animaniacs lean on so heavily haven't actually been on TV since, like, the Bush administration.

Rhyno posted:

Also the Beavis & Butthead revival was not good. Mostly because Judge forgot how to do the Beavis voice.

I thought it was really good! Mike Judge has a pretty terrible track record with revisiting concepts (The Goode Family after King of the Hill, Extract after Office Space) but the actual animated shorts were funnier than a lot of the ones in the original one and making up for the lack of contemporary music videos and the licensing issues of the original run by riffing on reality shows worked really well. The only real issue I had was that, presumably due to budget/time issues, during the video parts a lot of the cutaways were recycled low-quality 4:3 clips of animation from the original run instead of actually reanimating it and it clashed horribly with other animated clips in the same scene.

How does a person working on the production of a show give them any insight on the quality of the final product? Actors and writers and even directors themselves are usually completely surprised with how a film or show comes together in the end and some of the most successful things ever made were surrounded by scuttlebutt from disgruntles crew members swearing that it was going to be a total flop and was awful and the internet gawking at silly set photos and work in progress effects shots.

I assume the op is talking about book spoilers. I've never read the books and follow the thread and stuff does come out from time to time but I never really felt like anything was being ruined for me. Or at least I haven't since S1. Since then then the general sentiment from the book readers seems to be "the show is doing its own thing" and you just get occasional careless mentions of character or subplot stuff that didn't happen the first time around.

But in general you should just avoid threads about genre shows adapted from other sources. Goons don't generally understand the concept of spoilers.*

*Cue someone posting that study saying spoilers don't matter.

A study showing that people reading fiction over a century old benefit from being told the historical value and importance of the thing they're reading being interpreted as "spoilers are actually good" is the worst piece of TV-related pop science this side of the article using one anecdote from one cop to argue that Star Trek fans are pedophiles.

If you're gonna watch the Orville just watch TNG reruns and then pause it to make a ball joke every couple minutes.

I always wonder if people who say stuff like this actually watched the show past the pilot and were really bad at it or are just playing a game of telephone because outside of like one ejaculation joke in the opening of the pilot all the humor is character driven rather than pee pee doo doo balls like goons say it is. And even when it does occasionally dip its toes into pop culture jokes they're usually either in service of the plot and characters (their Worf analog Bortus being inspired to defend his 'deformed' child by Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) or subtle meta stuff (the god of the evil alien race being named Avis, which in real life is a car rental company whose biggest competitor is a company named Enterprise) rather than Family Guy cutaways like everyone who thinks the title is a reference to Orville Redenbacher rather than Orville Wright assumes it is.

Also the accusations of the plots being derivative aren't really fair because TNG itself was largely the same few themes and plots played over and over again in different permutations. The Orville may touch on a lot of the same things but even it its first season (which is when even fans will admit TNG was borderline unwatchable) has managed to put new or interesting spins on a lot of those stock plots and the relationship between the characters and their world not having a stick up its rear end like Trek makes even the repeats at least feel fresh and, to me at least, a lot more enjoyable. It even managed to have a holodeck episode that was surprising, had real stakes, and had the entire thing functioning perfectly the entire time!

That's psychological. The actual alternative to a split 20-episode season is two 10-episode seasons. A split 16-episode season or two 8-episode seasons. A so on. It's labeling, the difference between ketchup and catsup.

Everything about it from production to release schedule is completely different, like others said literally the only reason it happens is as a loophole to avoid having to actually pay the people who make the show more by weaseling out of contract negotiations and also try and double-dip on sales of the show. Like how thanks to the "split" final season of Breaking Bad we got what was effectively two 8-episode seasons that were produced and released a year apart, they even sold them as separate full-priced season subscriptions until Amazon told them to cut it out.
