Welp, again barely made it. I really should stop doing most of the work at the very end of the month. First, I ended my long-running Master of Orion 3 LP this month: MO3 156: The Age of Rebellion VI: The Undiscovered Sector MO3 157: The Age of Rebellion VII: Orion Generations MO3 158: The Age of Rebellion VIII: Orion Contacts However, three final update came up a bit short, according to my text editor it's at most 8198 words. So I sat back down this evening and went back to an older project I keep tinkering around with, and collected and reordered some old fragments and other electronic paperwork to turn it into a proper writing project. Then started writing again. The reorganizing turned my old files into a text 5447 words long, which sadly doesn't cound because while organizing files certainly is work, it's not writing. So I kept writing until I stopped after a good stopping point to catch my breath. The new text is now 7436 words long. In other words, the total tally for this month was 8198 + 1989 = 10187 words. 10187 words for January 2024 OK, in hopes I pace myself better and because I still have a huge backlog of old projects to get running again and new poo poo to start, I pledge again 10k for February. May I survive my hubris.

Welp, as always really loving late, but I did it: This link goes to a document I filled up with a mad treatise about making a good space 4x game. Next month I'll probably go back and finish it, I dunno. I mostly wrote this so my thoughts wouldn't drive me insane. 7k words, give or take a couple dozen. This link however, goes to an update I wrote for my Operation Eastside screenshot LP. About 3,2k words. 10k for February: Achieved! And again I pledge 10k words for March 2024

Again, I planned my time so badly I was forced to write 6k words in just under three days, but also again, I made it! And this time I managed to concentrate on extending and reworking existing poo poo, instead of my old curse of just constantly starting new stuff. 1. Fantasy. Started as just a short story, but then exploded into an entire setting. I'll keep working on this to see where it goes. Current stat is ca. 8064 words, 2412 words written this month. 2. Science Fiction. I keep working on this since forever. One of my oldest projects, and I also keep rewriting things because I have a real problem with changing my mind constantly. In March, this text blew up into 15033 words. Of which, 7795 words were written in this single month alone. This makes the total for March 2024: 10207 words. Man, this was far too close. I'm also running into the problem how to count editing my backlog of finished older stuff. Obviously, just counting words would give me bizarre cases where e.g. a 10k word text turns into an 8k text after extensive rework, and then I'd have written -2k words, which makes no sense. But keeping a proper tally of how many words I keep deleting/writing new seems like a lot of extra work. Just declaring the entirety of the changed text to be the new word count sounds unethical to me, too. So I guess for April, I'll go with a compromise: I'll pledge 8000 words, to give myself a little buffer in which I can edit things. Hopefully, this works out!

One of these days, I will manage to actually post on a day that's not literally the last day of the month, ugh. Anyway, most of what I did in April was related to my Operation: Eastside Let's Play, so let's look at the final count: The penultimate update was, according to my text editor, 3860 words. The last main run update ended up clocking in at 4732 words. There was also this mess. 7019 words, a lore update for the same thread. I only count maybe 2k of those, since most of it was already written, I just revised, edited and added stuff. The original word count I remember from last time was something like 3-4k, and I'm playing it safe and rounding down heavily. 3,8k 4,7k 2k Approximately 10,5k words. Huh. Looks like working so much on that dumb treatise about space doors would have been enough to even pull me through a 10k-word goal. gently caress it, too late. Also I'm playing it safe again: 8000 words for May, go!

And again I nearly failed. Welp, at least I got a sudden burst of inspiration today and typed out 4k words in one day. I would have been so hosed otherwise. A bunch of poo poo about fox spirits, still extremely early. 1,4k words For some reason, I keep going back to this mess. A design document for something that was originally meant to describe a possible spaceship board game and computer game engine, but has mutated so much, by now it has been morphed into a design description of a possible future space 4x. This is part 2 already, and it's 2,6k words I did both of those pretty early in May, and then lost two weeks because of eye trouble keeping me from doing more than sleeping and some low-energy shitposting. Then I got a huge burst and sat down to write this today: Resource Wars Enemy POVs, Part 1 I just kept writing and it somehow worked out! 4k words I even managed to complete a chapter! But now I'm completely done. And because I'm insane, I'm pledging 8k words in June, despite facing down the possibility of more invasive eye surgery. But hey, I try to stay positive. After all, if I go blind for real, it's not like getting banned for not reaching my target matters anymore if I can't post anyway!

OK, I did it. Another month cleared. And again, I pledge 8k words for July 2024. Spaceship Combat Simulate Targeting, Damage: 4,69k words The First Two Star Oceans: 1,69k words Resource Wars Dialog: Putting Terms into Words: 2,28k words Together, my output for June was 8,66k words.

Almost failed again! But hey, this time I only did 20% of the work in a single day, so: Progress! Some poo poo I worked on this month. Update: Since trying to track which files I had allowed people to read and remembering to revoke that right later became a hassle, I changed to just making a throw-away-file and copying my monthly output over. I'll just have to remember to delete those trash files later. So, this file contains 4559 words, but I have to subtract 142 words that were already written when I opened one of the real files this copy is based on in July. Total: 4417 words. Still not enough, though! Luckily I'm still working on a screenshot-LP, and though the post isn't finished yet, it adds another 4608 words. Sot the final total for July was: 4,6k + 4,56k = 9,16k words 8k goal achieved. OK, that wasn't so bad! And since apparently even my lazy rear end managed to limp further than anticipated, my goal for August will now be 10000 words! because if I can get close to 10k by being this lazy, I deserve to have my goal posts moved until I actually show some effort again

My time management skills continue to suck, but at least I managed to finish my 10k goal! Small victories. As always, I did almost nothing for most of the month, then did everything in about a week. -A little bit over a week ago, I happened to listen to a podcast about plots in novels, and it made me realize that one of the two big projects I'm working on had none. Or to be more precise, I had a vague idea where the plot was supposed to be going, but everything was just in my head. Consequently, I wrote down 8k+ words of plot in the span of a week. Now, every time I forget what was supposed to happen, I can look into this file and gain a vague understanding of what direction things need to go. Spiffy! Also, my plot went from zero to covering 6+ novels, lol. Talk about being optimistic here. Eventually, I managed to stop myself from pushing the plot further and further into the future, and went back to actually working on the first novel in the sequence. Mostly glossary-work, as I'm terrible with names, and the first thing I noticed when opening the file was the realization I had managed to confuse two new characters several times in the span of a single paragraph. Hopefully, by keeping easy-to-find little biographies of my named characters, I can in the future prevent this from happening again! Anyway, this ended up creating 2k+ more words, allowing me to finish my 10k words goal today. As proof, here's the temporary trash file where I copied my work from August into. Total word count was: 11762 words, minus 1528 words that were pre-written in July. 10234 words Welp, on one hand, that was incredibly badly organized, again. On the other, if I can write 10k words in a week, there's not really a reason to reduce my monthly goal. So my pledge for September 2024 remains the same: 10k words.

So, let's tally up. Medical emergencies be damned, I still barely managed to crawl over the finishing line. Hopefully November will be less interesting. According to my text editor, the final update to my Operation Eastside LP-thread was 5063 words long. And now we have a problem. See, I immediately started working on my next screenshot LP, since it's something I wanted to do for years. I went through old drafts I'd already created when my older Let's Plays felt like dragging along too much, and did a lot of revising and expanding. I'm now getting close to starting the next thread, but: It's more story heavy than usual for a space 4x strategy game thread. I've carefully set things up for maximum confusion/impact, but: That will only work if no-one gets a spoiler in advance. So, according to my text editor, the preliminary work, including background notes and stage notes for myself, added up 5144 words on this final day. There's still work to be done, and to prevent people from accidentally getting spoiled on my plans, I can't show a Google document, like I normally would. Oops. I hope this still counts for the purpose of this thread, or I just wrote 5k+ words for nothing. (Also, I'm currently not allowed to own a credit card, so if I get banned, it'll probably be a few months of legal issues until I can come back.)

Nearly forgot to post this, but I just crossed the 8k barrier again. All stuff for my new screenshot-LP. Part of it is already up here, if I discount the poo poo I wrote back in October, I managed to add roughly 1,6k on what I had on 31st October*. 6,1k are part of a post that will go up tomorrow (there's still tons of links to set, screenshots and a video to upload, etc.) And I've already started with the following update, which currently sits at 500 words. Together, I managed (rounded down, of course) 8,2k words. December will be a busy month, however, with family and work vying for my attention, so I'm forced to stay at 8k for December as my pledge. *To be precise, I forgot to mention what I did back in October also involved background notes and similar poo poo that's not actually part of the finally published updates, so the numbers might not fully add up**. **Then again, for November it doesn't matter, as I didn't add anything to those notes after finishing up my work on October 31st. December! The New Year is upon us! As always, I barely managed to scrape by. Again my main output has been one of my SSLPs. I worked on this during December: 5,5k words Stuff I've also worked on this month: -A Blog-Project, something about RPGs. 1,3k words -I've went back to a fantasy-story I was working on, and managed to expand the file a bit. Still tons of work to do, but still. Progress.1,2k words I've rounded down of course, but still. Barely getting above my 8k-goal feels painful. Welp, let's keep trying. New goal for January 2025: Another 8k, please.

OK, technically it's not 2024 anymore, but I managed to do my thing in January, of course I then hosed it up because I forgot to post here after reaching my 8k-goal on Friday. Oops. So let's rectify that. Mostly, I've worked on my new screenshot Let's Play, Ascendancy. 4,9k words 2,9k words 7,8k, plus 1k words I wrote for the next update already. And then I got tired because like always, I overdid things and wrote all those 8k+ words in approx. 3-4 sessions. I think less then a full week of working, taken together. If I ever lose my job or start taking stimulants, I could easily reach 30k+ words per month at this speed. Man, I wish I could always write this fast, I could easily punt out a full novel every three months if I could keep this up without collapsing. ![]() However, I'm not Data, so my goal for February remains at a steady 8k words.

Oof, this month was bad. Health issues, insane workload. I barely had any time to relax, as even with German healthcare, losing your job hurts, so I've been concentrating on keeping my job instead. Consequently, I barely managed 4k in February. Pledge failed. At least this time I know another small set of eye surgery is coming, instead of it being a surprise, so for March, I'll have to reduce my pledge to 4k words instead. Also our company has more plans, which means more work for me. I think it'll take me until April, when I can take some vacation days, when I can get consistently above that. Sorry. Edit: Ironically, I spend my morning on this Sunday combining, sorting and editing old stuff for one of my projects, to make my files less of a mess. (It was a wild mix of English and German files, plus old and obsolete stuff mixed in, now everything makes a lot more sense.) I've probably touched 20k+ words, though I'm not sure how editing work falls down on this challenge. Another irony, I've noticed I've fallen way behind on editing work because my brain went DOES NOT COUNT NO NEW WORDS on me the entire time I'm doing this challenge. Talk about tricking yourself into getting lazy. ![]() I'd really like editing work to count, even if not maybe in full word count -I'm aware that deleting 10k words is probably a lot easier than writing 10k words. Welp, minimalist 4000 words pledge fulfilled. The few times I had for writing this month were mainly spent on my Ascendancy screenshot LP. One new update finished, the one after that already mostly done. Approx. 3k + 1100 words. After some more polishing and editing, the first new update will go up on Wednesday, the second one will probably show up on Saturday. Anyway, health things seem to stabilize for now, and stress-levels at work are also slowly going down, thanks to our employer reducing all of our work times for the same pay. Our morale is going up, and my limited ability to work at a computer screen gains an additional 1-2 hours each week I now can put into writing for fun, instead of writing for work. With this, and some vacation days coming up, I feel confided to go back to 8k for April. Pledge for April: 8000 words.
