Wasn't ABC published under Wildstorm? Curious how publishing rights work with that because I thought the whole point of ABC was that it was owned by Moore, and Wildstorm was independent before DC bought them out with Lee.

Presumably it's JLA #22, which is coming out on Wednesday and is the first part of a storyline about the Queen of Fables. "With her reality-warping power, her intent is to take over the real world and the imaginary and rule over everything—and without Batman, does the Justice League stand a chance against her? Or will reality crumble at the Queen’s whim?"

Also Steve Orlando is saying the following on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/thesteveorlando/status/950033387774980097

https://twitter.com/thesteveorlando/status/950156723750400002

So all signs would point to Promethea, yeah.

I am hazy on the details but the America's Best Comics line was largely created because Awesome Comics (aka Rob Liefeld Fleeing Creditors: The Publisher II) was in the middle of folding right as Moore was prepping to write a bunch of comics based on Liefeld characters (Youngblood and Supreme actually came out, a bunch of other ones were announced and never materialized) that featured most of the ABC creative team on them (Sprouse, Veitch, Ross, I want to say also JHW3 was supposed to do something at Awesome?) and so he basically rejiggered some of those concepts into a 'new' line of comics published through Wildstorm, where he'd had a good WFH relationship with Jim Lee and Scott Dunbier in the 1990s working on Wildcats/etc. I am 90% sure the books were always intended to be WFH so that they could continue when Moore got bored with them, allowing his collaborators and other people to keep them going and letting Lee/Dunbier/Wildstorm handle all of the business end so Moore didn't have to.

And then DC bought Wildstorm.

From what I understand, Moore took League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with him when he severed ties after the Black Dossier debacle, but DC still has the rest.

I'm alternating between a reread of BPRD with Paul Jenkins/Jae Lee Inhumans for the ESE thread and goddamn is it a great comic. One of the minis that preceded the ongoing John Arcudi/Guy Davis series was one of the few non-DC comics written by Geoff Johns, which is weird.

There was a period of multiple years where Marvel had a server where retailers/press could download PDF previews of their upcoming comics (usually the first 4-5 pages) and someone figured out that the files had the full issues in them and it was trivially easy to edit the file to let you read the whole thing. Either that or the URL went from like Siege_001_preview.pdf to Siege_001_full.pdf or something, I forget. Either way it was a loophole that existed for multiple years and lasted several months after the fact that someone straight up e-mailed Marvel to let them know that the flaw existed because there was some incident where they were convinced someone was "leaking" the issues out to someone and the whistleblower didn't want [insert editorial assistant here] to get fired on suspicion of leaking.

I don't think any big publisher is that dumb about things anymore, though up until recently I was 100% convinced Boom was just uploading scans of their own comics to piracy sites.

Also League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a a creator-owned project in the works prior to any of the ABC stuff and exists in a separate "universe" from the one the ABC comics hypothetically shared, so presumably it was a separate contract from Tom Strong/Promethea/Top Ten/etc. Which is why Moore was able to peel that off and publish it through Top Shelf.

I want them to put Smax in Red Hood and the Outlaws, feature his wife/twin sister and absolutely no retcons. They can frame it like Janet yelling at Cap for not being down with incest, like they did back in Ultimates 3.

Queen of Fables was at least a two-shot villain: she appeared in a Superman story during Gail Simone's short pre-Infinite Crisis run (which was pretty fun because it pitted Superman against some bad guys he didn't ordinarily fight, like Black Adam and Dr Polaris, but had some past-his-prime John Byrne art that I didn't like so much).

It's nothing that interesting, just that several years ago, before day-and-date digital comics were a thing and all illegal scans were actually "scans" and not people ripping books through Comixology/etc., Boom comics were consistently the very first comics "scanned", which implied that either scanners existed in a world where Irredeemable (and Farscape and Warhammer tie-in comics, and generally everything Boom published) had a higher interest level than whatever the top-selling Marvel/DC/Image/Dark Horse/etc. books of the week were, or that the 'scans' were coming from inside BOOM. This was the same period where Mark Waid was Boom's editor in chief and he was busy being evangelical about the potential of digital comics, which sparked further speculation.

Lightning Lord posted:

That was actually his book Underground with Jeff Parker, not Whiteout. And I guess the bulk of the money came from autographed copies/sketches from his Etsy store? But yeah, that was right around the same time. I think the struggle circa 2010 (which is roughly when I remember the Boom speculation was happening?) was that pretty much every publisher was extremely resistant to day-and-date digital releases, mostly down to pressure from physical retailers. So in the early days of (paid) digital comics the model was that a book would come out in the store in January, and then a month or six months later would be offered as a digital download at full price, which didn't really work for anyone. Pretty much every paid digital stream (from music to television to prose books to comics) have tried and abandoned the model of physical-then-delayed-digital-offering and realized that drives people towards pirated copies in the period between physical and digital releases. Some people are going to pirate things no matter what (which is sort of the lesson of Underground in that example too, I don't know if it led to a lot of purchases of the digital or physical trade), but it's dumb to give people even vaguely valid reasons to seek out bootlegs.

Steve Orlando's whole thing on JLA (and DC in general) has been to mine that late 1990s era of DC Comics for revamp potential, from Prometheus to Aztek to the Ace of Winchester to Neron to Bloodlines. Queen of Fables is extremely on-brand for him.

And do you mean Supreme or Mister Majestic? Because Rob Liefeld still owns Supreme and all of those characters.

Also on the topic of Jeph Loeb and Odd Proclivities, while I guess he doesn't endorse it, Jeph Loeb has an extreme and repeated interest in turning villains into cannibals; off the top of my head he had Killer Croc, Sabretooth, Ultimate Blob, (I think?) Ultimate Hulk, Tiger Shark, and I think at least one other character? It's a really odd recurring thing throughout his body of work. I only remembered Tiger Shark and Sabretooth by googling "Jeph Loeb cannibal" and finding a review I wrote nine years ago about this exact thing. That review might also have been my first published use of "there are too many farts in the fart machine" as well.

Whew, got busy right after I posted this!

So the way PDF previews now work is pretty simple. To entice retailers, DC and Marvel now send the previews to Diamond. On those books, when you click their entry in the Diamond catalog there is a "generate preview" button. When you do this there is a brief wait and then a pdf of the book downloads to your PC. Sometimes the preview is a full color finished book (Mister Miracle #1) but recently they are just b&w (all the new DC stuff hitting in the coming weeks). When you generate the pdf there is a pattern spread across the pages like puzzle pieces and in each piece is your store diamond code. This way if it leaks they can trace it almost immediately.

Now SOMEBODY thought it was a good idea to share the JLoA page in a retailer group this morning and that guy was removed from the group an hour later with the admin explaining that DC's FB guy asked for them to be booted and warning that there was a massive penalty coming to that store.
