Auston Matthews is really good. The Toronto Maple Leafs could use some work.

Someone reminded me that Will Arnett is a Leafs fan and it really helps put BoJack Horseman's childhood into perspective. Arnett was 13 when that dickhead Gretzky high-sticked the blessed heroic Kingston boy.

While we're on the topic of overrated Swedish defensemen, Oliver Ekman-Larsson is on pace for a solid -64 this season. I think he might want to be traded.Zodijackylite posted:Considering veteran 3rd pairing UFAs often get 2-3m over 2-3 years Roman Polak makes 1.1M and he's worth at least not more than half of that. bewbies posted:This article about Trading Auston Matthews is actually pretty good. No, this article is nonsense because it's basing almost everything around Matthews' usage and performance in his rookie season. 19 year-old Matthews isn't worth $12M, but he has plenty of growing to do and is already getting harder minutes than he was last season. Having said that, he has struggled a bit with injuries this season, but he's trending to be a dominant and very tangible-laden first line center at his peak. Not to mention that he has another year left on his ELC, so why panic now? His tiny salary would mainly be of benefit to a contending team, but contenders don't have a spare top defenseman and boatloads of futures to trade away. Trading him for Ekman-Larsson + picks and prospects is a bizarre idea. The Leafs already have Rielly and Gardiner on the left side and OEL's contract is expiring next season along with Gardiner's. I suppose in principle a premiere defenseman at $6-7M and a middle-6 center at $4-5M could provide more value than Matthews, but that's presuming that Nylander can handle top line center duties. But sure, try trading Matthews for J. Staal + Faulk + Carolina's 1st in EHM and see what happens. Note that Faulk is having a lovely season and while OEL has good possession stats on a bad team, after seeing him basically create a goal against on his own against the Leafs, I'm not convinced that he's entirely blameless for his impressive -34 so far. Anyway, the right answer is to keep Matthews, bury Matt Martin and toss Bozak off a cliff, and send Marleau off to Robidas island after this season. That should leave enough room to re-sign van Riemsdyk at a reasonable price (or another UFA if his demands are too high) and get a decent top four defenseman. Hainsey's only signed through next season, so he'll be gone once Matthews re-signs. Precambrian Video Games fucked around with this message at 17:00 on Jan 11, 2018 |

The Leafs are playing real bad recently but I do get frustrated by poo poo like this: https://mobile.twitter.com/TheFlintor/status/953461799927496705 Last time I checked they were 2nd last in powerplay opportunities. I vaguely recall them being top 5 last season. What the hell happened? It's mostly a symptom of a team that used to forecheck aggressively and skate into the zone effortlessly for 60 minutes turning into whatever this loving dump and chase garbage Babcock has them playing now, sure. But you can't deny that it could also be a vast league-wide conspiracy to disadvantage the greatest Canadian franchise in favour of sun belt Bettman favourites.

That SEAL list doesn't have Liljegren on it so therefore I think it's stupid. Also no Makar or any other defenseman besides Heiskanen in the top 13 or really more like 15 considering the lack of KHL players?

Pop quiz: which NHL team has the most game misconducts in their entire history? If you think it matters, this is not aggregating franchises that moved, so the Minnesota North Stars and Dallas Stars are counted separately. As a hint, you can add up match penalties too and the answer doesn't change, and as far as I can tell both have been in the rulebook for most of the NHL's history.

Of course it's the drat dirty Flyers. They have had 476 game misconducts and 30 match penalties - well ahead of the second place Canucks (since 1967) but surprisingly also ahead of the original 6 all time, even though expansion teams have played fewer than 4000 games to the 6500-odd for original 6. Anyway it's neat that the otherwise poorly designed NHL.com site lets you aggregate team stats going back to 1918: http://www.nhl.com/stats/team?aggre...sGameMisconduct

The Leafs will trade for Nash so that they can play him with Kadri and finally bump Komarov to the fourth line where he belongs. Don Cherry and Pierre McGuire will both gush about uniting two former London Knights studs as their dominant two-way play leads the Leafs to a Cup.

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander Marleau-Kadri-Marner van Riemsdyk-Bozak-Brown Komarov-Moore-Kapanen Leivo, Martin These Leafs practice lines are halfway to a good lineup! I expect them to last not more than one full period. e: oh great there's more! Jonas Siegel @jonassiegel Mike Babcock says Leo Komarov will go back to Nazem Kadri’s side once the Leafs return home. Says he made the switch to get a little jolt offensively while not having control of the matchups in Chicago or Dallas. Jonas Siegel @jonassiegel Babcock on Kadri/Komarov combo: "I like Leo there because he gives Naz a tightening about 10 times a game -- just to keep him in line." Please let Komarov gently caress off back to the KHL next season. Please. What in the gently caress is a tightening anyway can't the trainers do that? I shudder to think how good the Bruins would be if they'd taken the next 3 picks in the 2015 draft (Barzal, Connor, Chabot) instead of Zboril, Senyshyn and DeBrusk (the only NHL-calibre prospect so far). In conclusion, gently caress Brad Marcand.

Cody McLeod is still playing in the NHL? Why? And before you mention that he barely makes half of what Matt Martin does, let me remind you that Matt Martin actually scores 5v5 points at 2.5x McLeod's rate. ... seriously, Matt Martin is actually third behind only Matthews and Nylander in 5v5 P/60 this season. Still terrible though! Please take him for your fourth line facepunching needs!

Speaking of the Canucks, Luca Sbisa is having a career year with 10 points in 24 games with Vegas, along with a team-worst CF% below 44%, a full 4% worse than the next lowest player (Cody Eakin) and 8% worse than the team average of ~52%.
