I started playing this game a few days ago and I liked it and I played it a lot.

I am bad at twitch-shooting and luckily I don't need that at this level in this game! It's all about just knowing where to stand to not suck. The first ten hours are just learning all the places to stand where you will die.

Dumb newbie question: What do 'roamers' usually do on Defense when Attack instead goes "SURPRISE BREAKING IN THROUGH THE WINDOW WITH NO CHANCE TO STOP US "?

Feels real bad when I set up a maze of traps as Kapkan and then whoops gotta run back because my teammates got shot by someone rappelling in.

It depends on the map. On some maps there are ways to circle around and shoot the attackers in the side or back while they're queued up around the windows. A prime example for that is Clubhouse, where both of the upper-story objective locations give you a prime field of fire on the outside windows of the other, particularly if you have some explosives to open up a wall: https://www.r6maps.com/#club/2/all. On Skyscraper or Border you may be able to hop out onto the balconies and take them in the flank, too, though that can be quite risky if they're attentive. Some objective locations also simply just don't suit themselves all too well for roaming, precisely because there aren't many good flanking options available. In those cases, your best bet might be to just sit just a little ways away from the objective room and open up a new line of fire from an unexpected angle once the attackers make their move.

Last but not least, always try to be aware of your shortest route back to the objective and when you should try to go back. Even when it's not windows, sometimes the rest of your team simply gets overwhelmed by a well-timed push before you can get some good flanking action in. Keep a watch on the killfeed, and if your dudes start dying in quick succession and/or there's a loud ongoing firefight without any attackers dying, start hustling back. Nothing is worse than having been killed as an anchor after a protracted firefight only to see that your two roamers are still on the other side of the map and on the wrong level.

Speaking of shotguns, how did the whole thing with laser sights end up working out? Sometime around Blood Orchid there was a patch that supposedly removed the effect of laser sights on the pellet spread, but then there seemed to have been some walkback on it, and now there's a whole lot conflicting information floating around on the whole thing. So basically, is there still a point to taking a laser sight on a shotgun?

Actually the suppressor is always 100% the best choice. Particularly on shotguns.

Nah CS:GO has player count differences that make the modes play very different. Ranked and casual in R6 only have time differences. I've got something like a hundred hours into this game and I've only played a couple ranked matches, I feel they just go on to long.

On the other hand, I actually find myself enjoying the shorter round timers. It means that the attackers actually do need to have a go at the objective at a relatively brisk pace and can't just keep playing peeking games forever. Delaying tactics with operators like Smoke or Echo also become quite a bit more viable. The rounds tend feel more focused with more of a proper escalation to them. But yeah, having to play one match point after another because the teams just keep evening the score can get kind of exhausting.

In fact one of the reason why I stopped playing Overwatch was because people were constantly unhappy about what character I was playing, which doesn't seem to happen much even in Ranked Siege.
At least not at the High Silver/Low Gold ranks.

Yeah, the nice thing is that basically every operator is always useful above and beyond their gadgets just by their ability to shoot dudes dead. In Overwatch it's quite possible that you end up in a position where you can't do a drat thing just by virtue of your character (e.g. a Reaper jumps in your face while you're Ana or something). But in R6, you can always meaningfully contribute even if you're technically being countered. If you're Mute and get all your jammers toasted by Thatcher, you can still just shoot the fucker in the face no problem. A Mira who had her windows opened up by Twitch can still shoot about a billion bullets per second through the now-open murderhole. You're pretty much always a shootman first, and even a single kill brings your team 1/5th closer to victory.

Holy poo poo, Caveira is so fun. I was a bit wary about getting her because I'm a fairly mediocre roamer and she seems easy to overextend with, but so far I'm having a blast. The Luison is even better than I thought, you're super sneaky and fast at the same time, and the USAS probably has the best sound of any gun in the game and is legitimately pretty good on top of that.

I started playing yesterday on PC and I’ve been teamkilled 4 times already. 2 were accidental but 1 was because I put a castle barricade on a door that someone else didn’t like and instead of saying “hey don’t do that doorway” they just killed me instead. The other one was because one of my teammates was using his drone and I didn’t realize so I shot it when it rolled into my room. That was my fault.

Other than that though it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve had a couple rounds where I’ve gotten 4 kills. I even managed to escort he hostage out one time which seems rare.

Note that Castle has one of the most swingy gadgets. It's very possible to put up his barricades in places where they will outright help the attackers more than the defenders. And even if they're placed correctly, they're often only middling useful. Of course that's not to say that teamkilling for the choice of OP is ever appropriate (particularly because all defenders can just tear down Castle barricades as needed), but it's probably best to be extra careful with his gadget until you've got some experience on the usual flow on the various maps.

Yeah, I've been that pubbie more than a few times. Though in our defense, it seems like each Mira has her own preferences on how and where to combo windows and reinforcements. Some want it all reinforced (and a guy extensively bitched at us for not reinforcing the particular wall he wanted) and use the mirrors only on wholly reinforced walls for information gathering. Others like to have it on a reinforced wall next to a bare one for a quick strafe and shoot. Still others actually put the thing on a bare wall with reinforced ones adjacent to shoot directly above/below it. You never really know going in.

Putting in another vote for trying Caveira. Not so much for pure effectivity (though she can make quite the difference if played well), but mostly for the fun factor and as a learning experience. It's easy to mess up with her and achieve next to nothing by overextending, but if things do line up right and you get those interrogations and you manage those sneaky flanks, that's just about the most exciting and satisfying thing in the game. She's also very good at learning how to roam efficiently. She can relocate all across the map in a hurry without drawing much attention, and her weapons (while perfectly usable) are not super well-suited for getting into face-to-face firefights. This trains you to be mindful of where the enemy is at all times, and how to pick your battles so that you've got a decisive advantage before things even start. Before I had her, I would often just go right at the enemy attackers wherever they were and let things basically fall where they may. But after playing Cav a bunch, I've found I've gotten much more confident about disengaging when things aren't looking my way and maneuvering aggressively to get a better angle, which often works out much better.

I wish we'd see more a grounded Rainbow Six game come out with this destruction engine, I really miss the old Chaos Theory-era Clancy games. That R6: Patriots game looked pretty cool, I wonder if Ubi is planning on making something like that further down the line.

Pretty sure even Chaos Theory had thermal vision that could look through walls at a few dozen metres distance and a full-on invisibility suit.

Though yeah, something a bit more physical again would be nice. Like some dude with a big old exoskeleton who can... I dunno. Rip off reinforcements? Carry some piece of stupidly heavy equipment? Throw steel girders through walls into enemies behind them?

Nothing major since her release that I can remember, no. At this point I've basically switched to rolling with her shotgun 24/7 and only using her when there's a fairly small/cramped map coming up. The pistol's good enough for mid-range work, and the Candela really shines against targets in smaller rooms anyway. Throw in one, wait a second to see how they react (most people tend to immediately start spraying the doorway, don't get hit by that), throw another, and then just walk in and casually murder anybody inside at your leisure.

Come to think of it though, it is kind of weird how the attackers have no op who is built around stealth. The defenders have two fairly dedicated stealth ops with abilities that actively make them harder to detect, but the attackers' gadgets all tend to be fairly obvious. It might be interesting to have an attacker who's a bit sneakier.

What's the trick with the big guy with the glowing red weak spot on his back? My guess is you're supposed to bait his charge attack so he's stunned and you can melee him in the back, but my dumbass team kept shooting that spot instead, causing him to turn around and melee me every time I tried to get close, so I couldn't test that theory.

Damaging the big guy with explosives causes him to start a charge pretty much instantly most of the time. Impact nades are best for that, but you can usually make do with frags or even claymores. I think the explodey enemies also work.

Yeah, in a vacuum Lion's ability is kind of eh, but it combos really well with other ops. I've seen a Lion and a Glaz work together to clean rooms like that. Lion triggers his drone, Glaz throws a smoke and hops inside. Then the defenders got to choose between staying put and being easily picked off by Glaz, or trying to move and getting picked off by everyone else. It was pretty nasty to be on the receiving end of that.

Yeah. Basically in the phases when suppressors are useful (i.e. moving from one objective to the next), you don't really need them because there aren't that many enemies around. And all the spots that actually are difficult are wave-survival situations where a suppressor is more detrimental than anything else.
