Good enough!

Finally a reason to update from the ESR to real Firefox.

My personal recommendation would be to give it a few more days before abandoning ESR(wait for the next Firefox salr redux release). And make sure your third-party cookie settings are at least "From Visited" until Firefox 58.

Or if you want the extension to automatically import your existing user notes from legacy Firefox, that may be a little ways out (probably closer to February or so; ESR updates to 59 in March so it'd have to be a bit before then).

Threw another set of changes into the pull request bucket to fix and improve quick reply and the quick reply emote parser.

Highlights:

  • Enables the quick reply emote parser to work successfully in Firefox.
  • Prevents the boogeyman from appearing in Firefox <=57 with third-party cookies disabled.
  • Fixes a typo in EmoteParser that led to cached emotes never being updated.
  • Updates emote parser to fetch over https to prevent man-in-the middle attacks.
  • Fixes two bugs in quick edit so it works on single post pages and fetches bookmark status from single post pages correctly.
  • Adds a check so we don't store missing/malformed emote data.

Is there a way to get that little SA drop-down menu that used to show up in the File / Edit / View / History bar in Firefox? I don't see it in options but might be blind..I loved being able to pin forums there and jump around.

It's not possible to create top-level menus with WebExtensions, unfortunately. I'm not happy about it.

However, there's a separate toolbar button extension that should approximate that behavior. It's not signed yet, so you have to download it at: : https://bintray.com/salr/salr-firefox/download_file?file_path=salr-chrome-button.zip then you can go to about :debugging and load it as a temporary extension.

Still needs a lot of cleanup and it will eventually get merged into the main extension.

e: Okay looking into this it's just the same thing, but I guess on Chrome they don't give you the same power over where you put toolbar buttons (only user choices seem to be on toolbar or hidden in chrome menu) so the choice was made to have a separate extension to give users the option to have or not have it. I can just change that to a browser action on Firefox since the user can put the icon wherever they want, including "not on the UI".

e2: New version on a.m.o changed to a browser action and no longer needs the separate button extension.

Progress update: Data migration from legacy Firefox SALR is about half done; my plan is to have manual migration available in a new settings pane of legacy SALR that will annoyingly automatically open once when it receives said update. At this stage, I already have it building a new Redux settings string based on the Redux defaults and the existing legacy SALR user notes. May or may not go through the tedium of finding all of the individual settings matchups; I'll probably do a few that seem important but I encourage former legacy Firefox SALR users to check out all the new and different options in Redux, anyway.

Before I finish/push that out to the legacy Firefox SALR users, though, I want to look into how easy it'd be to add custom poster backgrounds & avatar hiding to Redux because then we could import all of those in one go. Once everything's available and the version with migration is in place, I'll recommend anyone still hanging onto ESR just for legacy SALR make the jump.

e: I do like the idea of having more control over where the toolbar button links open but at the moment that is going to be lower priority

:siren: New Firefox SALR Redux release out on addons.mozilla.org!

Notes:

quote:

  • New: Highlight the backgrounds of your favorite (or least favorite) users' posts! Just click "Edit Note" and type in a background color.
  • New: Hide Avatar toggle! Find it to the right of the "Edit Note" button. This lets you banish specific users' avatars to the abyss. They'll still display for a fraction of a second as the page is loading, but we have top men figuring out if we can reduce or eliminate even that. Don't want the feature? There's a setting!
  • New: Settings page now has a favicon in Firefox!
  • Fix: Quick Reply no longer thinks the forums are sending the reply page in UTF-8 encoding (because they aren't). This bug was accidentally introduced in the previous alpha release as part of the boogeyman warding. Rest assured, the boogeyman is still out there but you remain safe for now!
  • Fix: The Misc Commands on the settings page no longer are evil traps designed to break your browsing experience! Clearing local or sync user notes will no longer stop user notes (or those other user-note-migrating buttons) from working.
  • Some more minor fixes

most common cause: you need to either enable third-party cookies ('from visisted' is enough) or add a cookie exception to always allow https://forums.somethingawful.com (edit: this is fixed in Firefox 58 btw)

E: I only get the weird bar beneath posts after I update the SALR; after I refresh the page, it goes away. :iiam:

This unfortunately happens because of a difference in how chrome and firefox insert content scripts - Firefox adds them to all existing tabs by default with no option to opt out of that, while Chrome doesn't. That means when the extension updates, all the stuff gets added to the page again. A refresh clears it up, as mentioned.

Two possibilities come to mind right away: Do you have Firefox set to clear history when it closes, or are you always browsing privately?

iospace posted:

Found a live preview bug:

When submitted, it will actually show up as :haw:, not :)

That appears to be a bug in the way the redux preview parser handles emotes.

TECHNICAL EXPLANATION: Fundamentally, Redux approaches emotes in the preview by getting the list of emotes and then checking each emote to see if the text for it exists in the post and then, if found, replacing it with the emote. Since :) exists early on in the emote list, it gets replaced with the image first. Legacy approached this a little differently - first, it would scan the post for bits that looked like emotes (fitting the format :text:) Then, it checked if those emote-like bits were in fact in the list of emotes. Basic smilies like :) which didn't fit that format were then searched/replaced separately.

I think what I'd like to do is rework the logic to be more similar to Legacy SALR's - it should be far more efficient to get a list of the smileys that exist in the post once and subsequently search the emote list for just those than it would be to search the post again and again for each of the (dozens? hundreds?) of emotes.

e: also noticed a separate bug, the redux preview parser doesn't care if you have "Disable smilies" checked

2] Default to timg instead of img? Had I not been paying attention (first time), I could have ended up with a probie for table breaking.

Forums auto-scale the width on regular images, so there's no longer a need for automatic timg, or even the option for it. If you're still worried (perhaps because of a super-tall image), you can still add the `t` yourself.

For the drag and drop, I don't disagree that there ought to be a file selection offered; for now, if you're on Windows I can offer some possible help: you can focus Firefox without having to move windows around by hovering said image on the Firefox window entry on your taskbar, then proceed to drag it onto the drop pad.
