The open letter to the mayor published in mid-February by Justin Keller, founder of a not very successful startup, was typical in tone: “I know people are frustrated about gentrification happening in the city, but the reality is, we live in a free market society. The wealthy working people have earned their right to live in the city. They went out, got an education, work hard, and earned it. I shouldn’t have to worry about being accosted. I shouldn’t have to see the pain, struggle, and despair of homeless people to and from my way to work every day.”

"This is frustrating. Labor is being paid first again. Shareholders get leftovers," Citi analyst Kevin Crissey wrote in a note to clients. Investors showed their displeasure by sending American Airlines Group Inc.'s stock down 5.2% to $43.98 on Thursday.

In fact, Count Nikolai Tolstoy says, more kings, queens and all the frippery that royalty brings would be not just a salve for a superpower in political turmoil, but also a stabilizing force for the world at large. “I love the monarchy,” Count Tolstoy, 82, said as he sat in his lush garden behind an expansive stone house. “Most people think the monarchy is just decorative and filled with splendor and personalities. They do not appreciate the important ideological reasons for a monarchy.”

your loving fake rear end leftism is loving tiring I pay a barber $20 for a haircut I pay two maids $150 to clean my house each of these are things I could do myself, but the people I pay do a better job than I would, and are quicker at it to boot but you’d never say that paying a barber is bourgeois because you have some hosed up notion that domestic labor can’t be outsourced unlike every other loving type of labor because of some bullshit hangup whose only explanation can be that the kind of work was historically wife’s work like gently caress if anything paying my maids is more leftist than paying the guy who cuts my hair because at least I know they’re making their own loving money unlike the barber who’s being exploited by the owner taking profit and the landlord taking rent and we all knowingly participate in those transactions every day with nary a word said, not like there’s such a thing as ethical consumption under capitalism in the first place

Some wealthy Manhattan moms have figured out a way to cut the long lines at Disney World — by hiring disabled people to pose as family members so they and their kids can jump to the front, The Post has learned. The “black-market Disney guides” run $130 an hour, or $1,040 for an eight-hour day. “My daughter waited one minute to get on ‘It’s a Small World’ — the other kids had to wait 2 1/2 hours,” crowed one mom, who hired a disabled guide through Dream Tours Florida. “You can’t go to Disney without a tour concierge,’’ she sniffed. “This is how the 1 percent does Disney.” The woman said she hired a Dream Tours guide to escort her, her husband and their 1-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter through the park in a motorized scooter with a “handicapped” sign on it. The group was sent straight to an auxiliary entrance at the front of each attraction. Disney allows each guest who needs a wheelchair or motorized scooter to bring up to six guests to a “more convenient entrance.” The Florida entertainment mecca warns that there “may be a waiting period before boarding.” But the consensus among upper-crust moms who have used the illicit handicap tactic is that the trick is well worth the cost. Not only is their “black-market tour guide” more efficient than Disney World’s VIP Tours, it’s cheaper, too. Disney Tours offers a VIP guide and fast passes for $310 to $380 per hour. Passing around the rogue guide service’s phone number recently became a shameless ritual among Manhattan’s private-school set during spring break. The service asks who referred you before they even take your call. “It’s insider knowledge that very few have and share carefully,” said social anthropologist Dr. Wednesday Martin, who caught wind of the underground network while doing research for her upcoming book “Primates of Park Avenue.” “Who wants a speed pass when you can use your black-market handicapped guide to circumvent the lines all together?” she said. “So when you’re doing it, you’re affirming that you are one of the privileged insiders who has and shares this information.” sorry for the bad formatting it's from my america.txt

Corny posted:https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-06-16/beware-of-blaming-government-for-london-tower-fire Unfortunately, “other peoples’ money” has a way of ultimately coming out of our own pockets. If it costs more to build buildings, then rents will rise. People will be forced to live in smaller spaces, perhaps farther away. Some of them, in fact, may be forced to commute by automobile, and then die in a car accident. We don’t see those costs in the same way as we see a fire’s victims; we will never know the name of the guy who was killed in a car accident because he had to live far from work because rents rose because regulators required sprinkler systems.

from a book review on the US navy during the civil war:quote:One flaw: M. makes reference to the U. S. Navy, etc. He seems unaware that the United States and its armed forces ceased to exist in April, evidently, 1861, and were not reconstituted until the seceded states elected to return to their former allegiance. Otherwise one would have to say that the Confederates waged war against the United States, and, trailing along, would come the falsehood that the C.S.A. fought to preserve slavery. Mr. M. does not watch enough fox news. Still and all, a good book, just right in length and depth.
