I guess round 22 is when the hawks just give up. Lost to Carlton last year, almost lost to the saints this year and in 2016 westcoast beat them by 20 odd points.

Was that Richmond-Melbourne finals stat that they haven't played each other since 1940, or haven't been in the finals together since 1940?

This lead me to look up some stats and I wonder what the heck was going on here:

Richmond's lowest score against Hawthorn is 2.20 (32), in Round 15, 1975 at Princes Park.

Wet i assume. Princes park could get muddy, drainage was only installed last year with the resurfacing.

Plus the whole park is a former bluestone quarry filled with landfill.

Huh.

Closest they came was 1982, where it was Richmond, Carlton and Hawthorn on the ladder.

Carlton played Hawthorn twice in the finals (QF and PF) while Richmond got two weeks off under the Final Five.

That seemed like an absurd stat until I looked up Melbourne's ladder positions for each year and saw that after winning the premiership in 1964, they proceeded to miss the finals for 22 seasons in a row :stare:

i’m working on a theory that the defensive stats of a team’s back six (spoils, tackles, pressure acts etc) do not significantly contribute to team’s defensive performance. Rather, the defensive qualities of the midfield are the moat important contributors to a team’s defensive performance, and the offensive qualities of the defence (disposal efficiency, metres gained per possession, kick/handball ratios) are the true measures of value for a back six player

Windmill Hut
Jul 21, 2008

Ah yes, Vanderberg goes hard at the ball, eyes on the ball, umpire behind the play pays a 59 for "eyes off the ball" and Eagles get a goal from it.

Absolute garbage umpiring.
