went through 6 rounds of interviews at a big tech company into a month of radio silence. felt I did well on the initial ones but then I completely fumbled the final technical as my time blindness kicked in

then they called me during the holiday break, said that I didn't get the position I applied for, but there's another open position that I fit for and that they will be ready to make an offer after the holidays are over. They were also really intent on asking if I have any other offers waiting, and what my timelines were. I was caught off guard so I said I have nothing waiting, not sure what the diplomatic response there is.

emailed for a followup now and got a "please keep an eye out on our career page to see if there's a position you like"

I'm chilling at my current job so it's not really affecting me but wtf is happening here, am I being led on in case the other guy fails probation or something? It's been 3+ months of back and forth

I've had almost exactly that happen with HP, although it was because the position ended up being filled internally rather than me failing the final interview, except when I went to apply for another position via their website it told me I can only apply once every 12 months

any email inquiries were answered with complete silence

its this

the internal hiring processes for companies are shambolic and nonsensical and they stop and start and go mute for completely incomprehensible (from the outside) reasons. dont try to make any sense out of them or search for any patterns in the tea leaves

Interviewing is dating. If someone tells you they don't want to keep dating you, don't bother asking why. It doesn't matter because it's not actionable. Don't put any date on a pedestal as "the one". Just keep lining up multiple first dates.

well, there exist marriages which are in good faith, whereas the job relationship cannot ever be in perfect good faith

yeah you're right there is no reason to worry about it, just venting because the communication up until now has been very clear. Pinged my reference to see if they can get more clarity but counting this as a dud

The main thing I was wondering is how to handle questions about my other interviews/offers. Is that probing for whether I'm a high demand employee, how much time they have or both? in this context it sounded like the position wasn't open yet so I'm not sure putting the pressure from other offers (not that I have any) would do anything

Either way I'm happy I got the chance to go through the whole process, Ive been at my job for a while so I need all the interviewing experience I can get

i've had places that will hurry along their interviewing process for me because I was further along with another place. i think it makes you look like you are in demand so i always drop that i've got other opportunities (gotta play hard to get)

At my last job I took the offer, went through 2 weeks of "training" joined the real team and then spent 2 weeks ramping up. Then I got the offer I was really waiting for and quit after my first paycheck came through.

My interview process at $currentjob was moving very slowly and was my only iron in the fire. After I applied at a couple other FAANGs and informed my recruiter I was going into final rounds at two other places (that I really didn't want to work at), I had an offer within days

e: I accepted my offer the morning I was supposed to have the stupid Amazon culture interview and I was so happy to get to cancel that lmao
