ofc when I throw a bunch of resumes the first hiring manager that wants a phone screen is the one for the job I least want

how acceptable of an answer is "I'm looking for a new job because my current job is in a backwater shithole and I want to move to civilization"

dragon enthusiast
Jan 1, 2010
idk if just outright saying that location is the primary reason is kosher, other answers like "better culture fit" or "better likelihood of turning the job into a career" seem like they might invite weird followup questions

good news: I got the job
bad news: I learned that (old, bad job) has been paying me way above market rate and they won't match my old salary

dragon enthusiast
Jan 1, 2010
i guess it's less being paid above market rate and more lingering effects from a previous career change

that one was definitely a pay cut disguised as a raise due to cost of living adjustments

now the cost of living is going in the opposite direction and idk if not having to deal with all the bullshit of my current job is going to offset the ~7% loss of figgies

dragon enthusiast

it definitely wasn't the existential crisis that led to me leaving my last job or anything approaching suicidal thoughts, more always coming back from work completely drained from putting out fires

anyways I got them to tack on some extra stacks, figgies are now in the future :unsmith:

You're willing to pick up your life and move somewhere else, why is it that you chose that particular location over the presumably dozens others other potential places

Essentially it's a play on the "so why are you looking for a new job" question

dragon enthusiast
Jan 1, 2010
what's the play for when you throw your resume at multiple openings in a company but only get a call for the one you liked the least

dragon enthusiast

idk if recruiters actually care about this but one detail I was told was to mind your tenses on your bullet points. present tense is only for tasks you're currently working on. past tense is for things you accomplished in the past. all prior jobs should be past tense, day to day responsibilities and active projects in current job go before past accomplishments

all bullet points should start with action verbs

haven't read your post history but if I were a recruiter I might be suspicious that you list no measurable accomplishments for your current job. im guessing it's cause you've only been there for a year and a half but "legacy mission-critical c++/windows code remaster in c#" gives me no idea what the scope of the project is (10k lines? 100k lines?) or your level of involvement and responsbility in the project. PASTJOB by comparison gives me a clear idea of your leadership and value generated for the company

not sure what that last line is for exactly but im guessing you want to separate that out into a separate TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS section

Create a second email address and apply to every job with both resume formats

I tried to do this once with two separate tailored resumes for two different positions, and the system flagged the accounts and merged the two together (and threw away the resume that was better ofc)

I work with a good number of people who abandoned game dev. I think it would only be good of you were doing your own thing like the stardew valley guy but gently caress working on like a AAA game or w/e

the stardew valley guy almost committed suicide over the crushing isolation of solo indie gamedev so im pretty sure that's not an improvement

Nobody gives a gently caress what you've been doing since high school, if you had left the trucking job off it would have looked like you went straight from high school to college to employment. Instead now you invite questions about why you didn't do the normie 4-5 years of college after high school

I don't know what kind of hiring software they're using, but when a similar problem happened at an old job their course of action was "we're creating a new job posting at the pay band compatible with the salary you want, please apply to it so we can hire you"

had the weirdest phone interview just now:
- called two hours earlier than arranged
- caller id showed up as unknown so I let it go to voicemail the first time
- kept stammering and putting me on hold
- also I have no idea what I was actually interviewing for lol, the position name he mentioned didn't match anything I had applied for

What are your salary expectations for this position? Please provide a range or specific number. Example 80k or 80-90k, open, negotiable, or industry standard are not specific. This is your first test in the application / interview process in following directions. Lets hope this is an easy question to pass. *
