i really don't like some of these places that have taleo portals for jobs. i know more than once i've applied for something with an old resume/cover letter because there was no way for me to check what i was actually submitting until i'd already sent it

i know someone that was fired under less than friendly circumstances and any time someone would call for a reference her former boss would say "sorry, you need to talk to HR" and then HR would tell the caller "Sorry, you need to talk to her boss"
hopefully the person calling got the message

linkedin job posted:

We're running an Online Hiring Tournament on March 3rd to hire Chief Software Architects (USD $100K/yr) with expertise in C# (.NET) OR C++ OR Angular OR Ruby on Rails OR PHP OR React. If you are not familiar with any of those technologies, you should not attend the event as we currently have openings only in those roles.
This event will include testing. Upon grading the deliverables from the event, we will set up qualified candidates with an interview with the hiring manager, who can hire 20 Chief Architects this week. This is a 100% remote, full-time role.

so i guess there are now literal tournaments to get job interviews? why is touching computers so bad

edit: also editing this to say i ran into another good one
a company that had a dropdown list for college major. Computer Science, which was clearly asked for in the job listing, was not actually on the list
they also had a mandatory "Desired Salary" field that would not take 0 (but it took 1)

what's a good protocol to use when applying to jobs that don't seem to have any place to attach a cover letter?
sometimes i will put it in a pdf with my resume, but usually i just pout a little after spending time writing it and leave it off

Shaman Linavi

thx 4 cover letter info, i will just keep on not sending them most of the time

if my experience is anything to go by, they graduate by bugging people around them to share their work and just turn that in

i took a class where the prof wanted us all to do Pair Programming. my partner rarely showed up after the first day so i was stuck doing all the work solo. i also ratted his rear end out and the prof was cool with me just putting my name on stuff. almost felt a little bad about it but dude told me he would handle the last assignment for the class and flaked on that too

still going to take their online coding thing because it never hurts to practice whiteboarding

this is what my resume ends up looking like since my only dev job was embedded c++ and that was year ago, also it was mostly QA compared to my current bullshit with ASP.Net
also those consulting firms that are like "Wow we will teach you how to program 10 weeks get paid any college major OK" dont even bother sending me rejection emails lol

edit: i would also like to say indeed is a piece of poo poo to search. they seem to really love throwing >50% sponsored jobs into every search, showing the same jobs on multiple pages

i think my best interviewer gone missing experience was when i was scheduled for a phone screen early in the morning and they didn't end up calling until around 6:30PM while they were stuck in traffic after leaving the office

wasn't too upset about not hearing back from that one

imo they tossed it because you did
code:
++tempFilecounter;
instead of
code:
tempFilecounter++;
i mean i'm still waiting to hear back from the company that had me do a little JSON thing/write about a PB&J sandwich but im guessing they long since tossed my resume. maybe some companies don't know what they want but are good at knowing what they don't want :shrug:

my first "software dev" job sounds very similar to yours except mine was in the medical industry. its nice to find people with similarly lovely experiences.

in funny job posting new, went to apply at a place that forces you to watch a video about the company before it takes you to the application page.
and in sabotaging my own jobsearch news, i found out i had a lovely sarcastic phrase hidden at the bottom of a job description on linkedin. not about the company or anything, but about being a volunteer worker and hearing stupid poo poo from people. im hoping my recent string of ghostings has more to do with bad recruiters than a stupid sarcastic comment but too late to worry about it i guess.

i applied to two separate but similar positions at different locations for a large company. i've been moving along the process with the more desirable of the two but a separate HR person contacted me about the other. i think im just going to start the process again with the other position and i figure they will eventually notice i applied for more than one position.

maybe its bad form to apply for multiple openings but i'm going to apply when i see something that looks good instead of wading through the list of poo poo on a job listing page and making sure its the best
