remember that even if you do end up being able to take an appropriate amount of vacation, such a policy also means "you won't get paid out any accrued-but-unused vacation when you leave"
yeah there are three aspects to the unlimited vacation scam
1) they dont have to hand you a check for unused pto when you leave
2) people feel pressure to not be seen as "abusing" the system, they calibrate the threshold for abuse against their coworkers, the effect is a ratcheting down of people taking time off
3) the intentionally amorphous definitions of "getting your job done" and "abusing the system" give management an excuse to fire/downsize people in a way that makes it harder to sue for wrongful termination

i always figured that contacting you months after you apply was a sign that the guy they hired didnt work out so before they start the whole expensive hunt up again why not see if any of the better qualified applicants they passed on are still available. a longshot (esp in this labor market) but hey if it pays out it can save the company a lot of time and effort and money

as a wise man once said, "interviewing and recruiting is garbage," and its entirely understandable to want to be quit of it as quickly as possible, but job offers have been known to evaporate at the 11th hour, so play it safe and keep grinding

it might even be an interesting experience - going to an interview with an acceptable offer already in your pocket is like playing with house money

every time i get a cobra letter the reaction is the same. who is buying cobra coverage. are they on a respirator or some poo poo
as far as I can tell, cobra is good for one thing only - if youre in the middle of some complicated, expensive medical procedure like chemotherapy or (this is a big one) pregnancy

a friend with unlimited vacation got from thanksgiving to the new year off this year.
a large part of the scam of unlimited vacation is that people are afraid to be seen as taking advantage of it, which ends up being self-reinforcing (as people calibrate their vacation-taking against what their coworkers are taking, and the whole thing ratchets downward)

(the largest part is they dont have to pay you your unused pto when you leave, of course)

game companies are famous for

1) paying below-market
2) demanding enormous amounts of crunch
3) firing you once the game ships

if your tech chops are good enough to work in gaming, theyre good enough to work in an industry that doesnt have all three of those characteristics

so dont work in gaming

they will promise you literally anything, and you're gonna pay for it, and good guess whether you get it.
i assume this is also where youd slot the big former giants of tech who settle on consulting once their prominence has faded (ibm, xerox, and unisys, and soon hp and dell)?

san diego has low wages (so many people move there for the weather that they bid down salaries) and very high cost of living (so many people move there for the weather they bid up the cost of housing)

plus it has grown faster than the infrastructure can keep up, so lots of traffic and iffy services

pro tip: get a job with a big-city salary (nyc, sf, la) and move/transfer to san diego

fizzbuzz is some bullshit but the reason it keeps being used is because there are lots of people with sterling software engineering resumes who cant do it. its a cheap and easy test to filter out frauds

the last interview i participated in was for an it support site lead position (for a location running mixed mac and windows) and the first candidate who came in specifically mentioned he possessed the specific mac/windows integration certification on his cv. the first tech question we asked him was the easy filter "so, what steps do you do to bind a mac laptop to an active directory domain?" and he stammered and hemmed and said he couldnt remember how to do it off the top of his head, and even with multiple hints ("so, you go to users & groups...") he couldnt come close to the correct answer, and the interview went downhill from there

people will claim all sorts of wild poo poo on their resumes and you have to test them to see if any of it is true. theyre just doing basic due diligence
