My bold rear end predictions from last year/thread:

Cygni posted:

I'm gonna make a bold rear end prediction: a third engine manufacturer is announced before the season ends (this is going to be completely wrong, but i wanna be positive)

Also less bold rear end prediction, the new car bodywork will look Good™

well at least i went 1 for 2.

2018 Predictions:

1) Champion will NOT be a Penske driver.

2) gently caress it, lets keep it rolling THIRD ENGINE MANUFACTURER BEFORE SEASON ENDS

Tier 1 is Penske and Ganassi. Compete every year for championships. Big budgets.

Tier 1.5 is Andretti. Occasionally threaten for championships, regularly win a few races a year. Good budget.

Tier 2 is Rahal, Schmidt, and ECR. Rarely threaten for championships/finish top 3, win 1 or 2 races a year maybe. Sufficient budgets.

Tier 3 is Coyne and Foyt. Rarely win races. Small budgets. Coyne out-hustles/out-strategies the field regularly though.

We dunno about Carlin, Harding, Juncos, or Shank.

Chip's the type of dude who denies everything until the day the press announcement goes out. He doesn't normally tip his hand or leak poo poo to reporters, hence the surprise Ed Jones signing and stuff.

This was his quote from back in December:

quote:

"I was a little taken aback by how much was made of it," Ganassi said of the reaction to his discussions with the former IndyCar star. "Folks would like to see a lot of things. First and foremost, things like that have to make business sense to all the parties. I don't want to discourage the idea, but I think it's a small percentage of something happening. There's nothing imminent."

Sounds like Hinch is getting what he wanted to resign. More engineering help, more budget, better teammate (thats his buddy no less), manufacturer testing, etc. They are definitely putting together the pieces to try to consistently challenge for race-wins.

Jay Frye posted:

“Well, part of this, again, whole process we talked about, we’ve come up with a five-year plan," Frye said on Tuesday. “The plan actually was activated and started in ’17 by freezing the current kits and then having the universal car starting in ’18, so this car will run in ’18, ’19, and ’20. End of ’18 we’ll get together with a collaboration of people and come up with what our goal or plan is for ’21 and beyond, so the plan is kind of a rolling five-year plan."

So looks like we will have 3 years of the UAK18 before whatever might come next, with the wishlisting and such for the '21 car starting end of the year.

Honda and Chevy have mutually agreed to limit development on the current engines (2018 was gonna be a big spending r&d year in the cycle), to start looking towards an all new design and potential more builders in 2020. The parameters for the 2020 engine are apparently already done, and the slogan? FAST AND LOUD:

Jay Frye posted:

"We hope to have some sort of news on this early in the year," Frye said. "And we are in agreement that the power piece is what's next in the equation. Everybody wants more power, so that's what we're working on giving our fans with this plan. 'Fast and loud,' brother, that's the thing we're going for."

Safe to assume the series is still too broke to allow turbo I4s along with the twin turbo V6s?

I don't think you will see a mixed spec cause of performance balancing concerns from the manufacturers themselves, honestly. IndyCar does mild BOP, but a full blown IMSA/PWC style balance would be bad news probably. The meltdowns would be incredible.

If i had to guess, I imagine V6 and V8, turbo and non-turbo, are probably on the table. Dunno about I4 turbo, but maybe! They want more power with similar to current cost constraints, and displacement will solve that pretty well.

If its 2.65l V8 twin-turbos, I will laugh forever.

Still 10 races available at Juncos and 11 at Shank if you gotta check!!!

Speakin of Indy, I think we pretty much already have 33 depending on how stuff plays out. The 24 full timers and part timers, plus Stefan Wilson, Munoz, Pippa, Helio, Lazier (says hes coming again), 3rd for Schmidt (confirmed not Danica), D&R is planning on 2, and Danica all confirmed. Assuming Danica doesn't land in one of those D&R seats, thats 33.

Thats assuming nobody else adds any either. Bumping? Maybe??

Also Marco's colors for 5 races, including Indy and Long Beach:
