Facebook censored Kurdish groups at Turkey's request when Turkey launched an invasion of northern Syria.

quote:

As Turkey launched a military offensive against Kurdish minorities in neighboring Syria in early 2018, Facebook’s top executives faced a political dilemma.

Turkey was demanding the social media giant block Facebook posts from the People’s Protection Units, a mostly Kurdish militia group the Turkish government had targeted. Should Facebook ignore the request, as it has done elsewhere, and risk losing access to tens of millions of users in Turkey? Or should it silence the group, known as the YPG, even if doing so added to the perception that the company too often bends to the wishes of authoritarian governments?

It wasn’t a particularly close call for the company’s leadership, newly disclosed emails show.

“I am fine with this,” wrote Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s No. 2 executive, in a one-sentence message to a team that reviewed the page. Three years later, YPG’s photos and updates about the Turkish military’s brutal attacks on the Kurdish minority in Syria still can’t be viewed by Facebook users inside Turkey.

The conversations, among other internal emails obtained by ProPublica, provide an unusually direct look into how tech giants like Facebook handle censorship requests made by governments that routinely limit what can be said publicly. When the Turkish government attacked the Kurds in the Afrin District of northern Syria, Turkey also arrested hundreds of its own residents for criticizing the operation.

This is how the US interpreted UN Resolution 2254 under Pompeo btw

quote:

The Syrian people will decide the future of Syria. To support them, the United States has provided over $12.2 billion in humanitarian assistance since the start of the conflict and will continue applying pressure on the Assad regime until there is irreversible progress toward a political transition as called for in UNSCR 2254. Also as called for in UNSCR 2254 and the Geneva Communiqué, there must be a nationwide ceasefire, accountability for acts committed during the conflict, free and fair elections pursuant to a new constitution, as well as the release of all arbitrarily detained persons. This is the only path toward a peaceful future for the Syrian people.

It was a resolution passed by the UN in 2015 calling for a ceasefire and political solution to the conflict.

A Feb. 15 rocket attack on coalition forces near the Erbil International Airport in Iraqi Kurdistan killed a civilian contractor and injured four American contractors and a US service member. At the time Psaki said Biden and the administration "reserve the right to respond in a manner and at a time of our choosing."

"We will respond in a way that's calculated on our timetable, and using a mix of tools, seen and unseen," Psaki told reporters...

"We have stated before that we will hold Iran responsible for the actions of its proxies that attack Americans," State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Monday, noting that "many of these attacks have used Iranian made, Iranian supplied weapons."

The strikes mark the military's first known action under President Joe Biden. The site was not specifically tied to the rocket attacks, but were believed to be used by Iranian-backed Shia militias operating in the region.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the strikes took place "at President Biden's direction" and were authorized not just to respond to recent attacks against American and coalition forces, but to deal with "ongoing threats to those personnel."

The decision to target the site in Syria was made from the "top down," a defense official said, and was not because of a specific recommendation from the military.

This is a heartbreaking look at the conditions Yemeni children live that's mostly pretty good journalism by the BBC. Then you realize they're never going to answer the obvious question: who bombed their school? All the BBC reporter deigns to tell us is that things were fine until the school was occupied by Houthi forces. But no indication as to who dropped a bomb on a building meant to house children. A true mystery. I guess we'll never know.

Biden bombed Syria in retaliation for a rocket attack with no US deaths. I don't know if a heart attack after counts as a death from the attack to the Pentagon though.

In December, nearly 200 checkpoints in Kandahar were abandoned by the Afghan army, according to a U.S. government watchdog report released Feb. 1. You'd expect the Russians would drop some toys on them, but unless the US found a way to stop it's contractors from bribing them not hassle the supply lines they might also have just bought them outright.
