Jim Varney was talented but he used that talent to sell garbage to gullible children and rednecks so I'm glad he's dead

One of the weirdest things to come out of the Ernest empire was the z-list redneck actors who were in them trying to strike out on their own.

I'm glad Jim Varney didn't live to see 9/11 because he's absolutely one of those people who would have lost it afterward.

In another universe Jim Varney played Nathan Bedford Forrest in An American Carol and lectures the Michael Moore stand-in about how it's heritage and not hate.

The opening credits are pretty good at least.

Jim Varney legit had a good grift going where, in the days where small local brands and TV stations still existed, you could make the exact same commercial for a dozen different products and nobody would be the wiser because it was in a completely different state. So he and John Cherry would go to somebody's house and spend the day making the same exact commercial over and over, just swapping out one soft drink for another or whatever.

If you're the podcast-listening type the Jim Varney episode of Laser Time is a good listen.

This was interesting as gently caress, thanks.

Laser Time is really good in general, the episode about The Monster Mash where they just get more and more exasperated hearing the dude's dozens of other identical novelty songs is fantastic.
