Champion mechs are never worth it, they're just the exact same mechs you can buy with c-bills but with XP bonuses, and while grinding XP does suck in this game, it's nowhere near as bad as World of Tanks so the XP bonus is a pretty questionable value. Aside from the c-bill bonus, hero mechs generally offer unique quirks and hardpoints so they at least give you a legitimate gameplay difference over c-bill model mechs.

That warhawk-c can do some nasty things. The c version is actually superior to the prime in a few ways: Namely, one of its arms gets an arm actuator, and if you put lasers instead of PPCs there you get arm traverse on both arms.
The -C version is also the one that gets universal toughness quirks for structure pretty much everywhere, as well as the CT energy slot.

There's a few builds for it that are fun:
5 large pulse (just be very careful not to do more than 2 in the ghost heat window)
4 ppc and ALL the heatsinks
My fave: 2 Heavy large laser, 2 lpl, and 1 CT PPC. You poke and harass at all ranges; the CT ppc is just because its expected of a warhawk and its useful to shut down ecm. Lean on the LPLS for real work, and if you ever get a clean shot the HLL's can do insane damage.
The reason for the LPL focus is the -C can get something like 20% LPL laser duration including skills.

Its also the few remaining clan mechs where you can just get extra turn speed by swapping legs (at the cost of losing set of 8 bonuses which are pgood on that one, and the structure bonus on the -c legs)

Other folks have already answered this one, but overall, consider reading the OP. I haven't updated it in a year, but MWO hasn't made any major changes in that time so it's still current.

Edit: though do disregard the quick-start guide, since you have a mountain of MC you can use to buy a couple of the nicer hero mechs.

Oh yeah good point, thanks. I gave it a look a couple of days ago but with an eight year old frame of reference my eyes kind of glazed over at the mass of game terminology. Now with the client installed and a little time in game it makes more sense.

I appreciate the effortpost. I configured my Atlas -S like you suggested and it's a lot better. I'm still terrible but playing helps with that. I also picked up the Mad Cat mk II deathstrike and Warhammer black widow since they're on sale for 50% off, so 6k MC for both. So far I've only been able to afford to configure the mad cat like you linked but it's pretty cool. I remember in beta there were no clan mechs and everyone kept saying clan mechs are a lot better and it really feels like it playing the two, but I'm also essentially a newbie.

I also realized looking at my mech selection screen there's drop down arrows for the different mech weight categories so I have a couple of mechs I didn't realize. I have a Centurion CN-AH(L) which seems to be a hero mech and a Nova NVA-S(C). I don't know why I have them but hey, free stuff.

Maybe it's a visual glitch but with mrms and atms and lrms in testing arena I'm sometimes seeing a few of them detonate midair, causing a splash of dirt like if they impacted the ground, or in the case of atms, playing the bouncing animation without detonating. Any ideas what this is caused by and if it actually impacts gameplay?

If you fire ATMs at targets within 120 meters they'll just bounce off their target harmlessly. If you're outside of 120 meters then I got nothing

I have messed with the configs a bit in to get more performance. I havent tried it ingame. I'll poke around some more.

Edit: word is from the b33f discord that sometimes missiles ingame just bump into each other and blow up

Yes it lowers the damage you do as it is not just visual only

No idea what config setting is responsible for dirt explosions that appear when missiles hit the ground appearing midair when missiles kill themselves in the sky though.

I think you’re in the ballpark. I run some guy’s config and while it has improved frame rates(it doesn’t do anything like provide an advantage but all the water is green now ) it causes autocannon shells to explode in midair on testing grounds only. Not sure where the computations happen on testing vs live game.

The deathstrike is probably one of my favorite heroes. It is very strong and very good.

Good loadouts for it include:
2 gauss rifles, 2 HLLs, 4 Mlas.
2 UAC10s, 2 PPCs
2 UAC10s, 6 MPLs
2 LBX20s, 6 MPLs.

It is pretty dang versatile, but the previously linked build is probably the de facto standard build you see. It does suffer a bit in closer range fights but that's what the trade off is.

I also have a fondness for the Nova. You can do a nasty build that replaces the AMS with MGs or LMGs. This way if people aren't shooting at you then you can absolutely poo poo out the damage in CQC. I think I've gotten Ace of Spades in it twice.

Hm. This game is held together by duct tape and prayers. Glad it is probably fine on live.

Speed is the one thing you have to sacrifice on the -AH. I find it serviceable once you accept the fact that you'll never go above 64kph, and treat it like a stumbly urbanmech, hugging the assaults and twisting off return fire.

I'm interested to see if the extra 10kph you managed to squeak squawk out of it is worth the 3rd SRM4.

Sadly, the CN9-AH is one of those unlucky IS mediums that still has to choose between being either under-gunned or two slow because it can't hit an XL safely the way something like the ASN and VL can.

Adder isn't a popular mech, you're short with a flat top and the entirety of the top is center torso, so you're fragile, especially to lock-on missiles.

That said, it's one of my favourite lights. It's low, maneuverable, accelerates and decelerates well. You have to play it like a fragile medium instead of a light, really. I run the double PPC ADR-Prime, with the flamer and a tiny bit of armor swapped out for an extra heatsink.

Pornographic Memory
Dec 17, 2008

Yeah I'm not somebody who enjoys typical light mechs but I dig the Adder. It doesn't react well to getting shot, like most light mechs, but unlike them you usually hang out nearby your main pack of mechs and rely on the other team having more important targets for survivability, instead of running around at 130kph and being tiny and evasive. If you like that sort of gameplay Urbanmechs typically play the same but trade clan guns for better hit boxes.

Artic Wolf, Assassin, Bushwacker, Cougar, Cyclops, Dire Wolf, Linebacker, Mad Dog, Nova Cat, Stalker, Spider, Shadow Hawk, Raven, Rifleman (+IIC), Vindicator

Bushwackers have versatile loadouts and are very tough for mediums.
Cyclops Slepnir is great for 4x LBX10.
Dire Wolf Ultraviolet can be used to make 8x AC2/LBX2.
Raven-3L is an interesting harasser with special NARC quirks.
