The good things I can say about MW5 is that some of the builds that don't work in MWO work well in MW5.

The bad things I can say about MW5 are mods fix a lot of the problem. Which is not great for a games future if the devs made a lovely base game.

After playing so many MWO builds with one or two weapon groups max (one of which is almost always medium lasers) I actually dig MW5's mech lab making me use more mixed and lore friendly builds (though some mechs still get screwed for being too mixed). Boating is boring.

Have the MW5 mods managed to fix the dreadful lancemate AI or infinite spawning enemies that make any attempt at strategy pointless? It's a sad state when a 20 year old predecessor does nearly everything better.

I've never regretted a pre-order so badly. Shame on me for trusting PGI, I guess.

There actually is an AI overhaul mod for friendlies and enemies but I haven't used it much so I can't give a review other than to say it at least makes AI use jump jets (it also adjusts jump jets so that they give much more lift).

The "Better Spawns" mod that's been around since release is pretty solid, it makes all enemies that aren't on the map from the start of the mission have to be delivered via dropship (or fly in from off map for VTOLs) which does a lot to rationalize fights. You still get some units wandering in your back or trickling in but often I've found that they attack in waves so you'll get good sized fights followed by calm.

The Reloaded(?) Mod changes spawns from waves and waves of vehicles to smaller lances of mechs with some supporting vehicles. Basically changes the difficulty from quantity to quality. In fact, the first mod you should install is an overhaul mod like Reloaded because it fixes so much of the game.

There are also AI mods for lance and enemies, it upgrades your lancemates from "dumb as a rock" to "semi competent apes". They are still stupid in some ways, such as hanging back way too much or suicide charging when you tell them to attack a specific target but its alot better than before.

The AI mod I am using works on its own but it also meshes with an overhaul mod similar to Reloaded which allows you to give roles to your lancemates such as Brawler, Fire support, etc. I'm just too lazy to use that one since it has stuff like ammo exploding from heat that I dont really enjoy in my stompy robot game.

Even worse than these things is the bland mission design. There's not exactly a ton of voicework or cutscenes in Mechwarrior 2, but it's interesting because the maps are handcrafted which means you get varied and interesting places to fight, the objectives have a lot of variety and you often get curveballs or optional extras, and the outcomes of a mission can change depending on what you do. (Failure is okay on most missions! Sometimes even good!)

I think this shows in MW5, too. There are a small number of missions that aren't proc gen, and each and every one is far more fun and interesting than the proc gen missions. Most look better, too.

I don't think they ever fixed the issue where sometimes enemies would decide "I'm going to shoot your head now" and keep their lasers focused on your cockpit for the full burn.

Years ago, I played for hours a day and was pretty good. Now I am busy and terrible, but I want to play again a little bit to reconnect with some old friends. What's a good assault mech and build I can use to avoid being a liability? I don't mind paying a few bucks.

I used to love SRM brawlers and to a lesser extent, my Dakkawolf. I converted an SRM brawler into an MRM brawler and that was OK. The Dakkawolf still seems usable. But I just want one good robot, because I don't have the time or energy to click on skill tree hexagons for fifty years or play in the Mech Lab much.

It's kind of simplistic but yeah if you had to have just one strong assault mech this would be my suggestion. Good DPS, good range, and good speed. The closest assaults for effectiveness to it are probably the dual heavy gauss Fafnirs and Annihilators but they drive so slow I can't stand them.

I guess the limitation of the MCII-B is you become a priority target.

IMO assaults are kind of underpowered right now, everything literally runs circles around you.

That's not even remotely true. The key is to shoot the light mechs in the face. The problem is when the player or the team can't aim.

Pornographic Memory

Eh assault mechs are strong, your slow speed just puts you more at the mercy of your team and reduces the margin of error for engaging. Nothing compares to the raw damage assaults dish out but if you get stuck in a fight you can't win there's no running - so they feel very feast or famine and you're often reduced to playing the nascar over and over because at least you know you'll be with your team that way.

that's kinda the problem with mechs with a lot of JJs, the mobility is fantastic but you don't have much else leftover to make it really a thing

Assaults run the battle. We decide where we're going, who we're attacking and leading any changes during the fight.

Everything else is just support. Even my Timberwolf feels like a light after I've had a few matches in the Madcat with AC5s and 10s.

It is a different playstyle though and it does get boring without real teams beacuse yeah, you can't just gently caress off and do your own thing. If your team is being poo poo, you're going to have a poo poo game.. regardless of what you do.

As soon as the level loads you circle around the entire map (the long way around) and come up around the enemy. Then you wait for the main battle to start and for teams to form lines. After the main line stops moving you run into the slowest, most isolated target you can see, alpha strike it in the back and spin around in circles until it dies. You get in an out cause everyone knows what this is about. You keep doing this until you're intercepted and people start hunting you down. It's great in terms of kills, wins and fun factor but it's fundamentally a different skill set than the rest of the game.

There's also an art to making the entire enemy team turn while your team pushes, but its an art that needs less timid pubsicles on your team.

Dropping airstrikes behind clusters of enemies is pretty good damage(comparably) too.

PPCs in general are the right choice if you can aim. I wound up running an AWS-8Q for most of the game after I had it unlocked, headcapping is very easy.

The Nightstar was a kind of out there choice as an ultimate mech but it's such a ridiculous headcapping machine that it actually does end up being a gamebreaker. The last stand in the final mission is basically tailor made to just sit on the high ground and cave in cockpits from like a kilometer away.

PGI posted:

Greetings, MechWarriors!

As mentioned in my previous Monday update, I had another meeting with Russ and Matt to go over the feedback we've been gathering from the community on potential future development updates for MechWarrior Online. We have recognized definite areas of consensus from within the participating community members, which I will outline below.

This list below is in no way final, so now is the time to make your voices heard. Don't like something on this list? Let's discuss it here. Want something added to the list? Let's discuss it here. We will also be organizing other methods of community discussion, including some form of a roundtable meeting between the players and the developers (more on that soon).

We will also begin discussing some of these topics with the developers to get technical reviews, and we will make sure the discussions are updated with the information we receive from them. Have a technical question for the developers? Ask here!

So this is it. This is when the real work begins, and I expect we'll be taking the majority of the remaining six weeks prior to the holiday break to really hash everything out into a solid plan for MWO in the new year. I'll be continuing my Monday update posts here, and my Friday appearances on the NGNG podcast with Phil, to keep everyone updated in the process. I will also be participating in the forum threads more closely and regularly, to continue receiving your feedback and keep the discussion flowing and on point.

I realize these are just bullet points. This is a general outline. We can go into greater detail with each topic as we move forward. Not everything listed is guaranteed to make it in. We're still considering more options. These are not listed in any particular order.

Their list of wishes would take a year to implement even at a basic level.

I like how things that take 5 minutes like renaming a discord channel are clumped with stuff like UI performance (weeks of profiling to see if you can find the slowdown, and if it's in the ui. if.) and open-ended stuff like balancing under-performers or the weapons table.

I highly suspect these were written in the same order in which they got brainstormed at the meeting.
