Since I'm just starting out, is the NOVA-S(C) you get for free any good? Does it need a better build or anything?

I ended up experimenting with it a bit more, and going all NOVA-S pods with 6 er medium lasers + 4 machine guns (2 tons of ammo) + 4 double heat sinks gets you an absolute murder machine with some spare tonnage to add some doodads (in my case, an active probe, a targeting computer 1, and an AMS with half a ton of ammo). Max armor minus a couple of points off the head (I don't think I've ever been headcapped in the NOVA), and investing in the survivability tree and heat management pays off big time.

Thanks. The Hellbringer being on sale means I have some extra money to play around with from the newbie achievements even after kitting it out with the build suggested in the OP, so I'm wondering what kind of things I should spend money on next.

been playing with this build a bit and I think I found a build I like even better - I figured the NVA-S pod quirks weren't helping me anyway since my arm lasers weren't medium pulse lasers, so i swapped in NVA-PRIME pods for the arms, then switched out the 3 ER medium lasers in each arm for 5 ER small lasers and the MGs to HMGs. losing a lot of range obviously, but i feel like i absolutely wreck people when i do get in range
NVA-S(C)

the armor values in mech lab and in-game don't seem to add up (i could fit in more armor in game, past the mech lab limits here). is having an AMS good? i feel like i might be better served switching out the AMS and its ammo for more HMG ammo but i feel like it might have some value to be able to give my team a little support while i'm running around angling to get in range. i don't know enough about this game to be sure if the active probe does much for me either

If you're just starting out I'd highly recommend playing a medium or heavy mech and sticking near your team mates until you get the hang of your mechanics, a little map knowledge, and how battles flow. The downside of playing a light mech is that it encourages you to split off from your team and all that speed makes it super easy to get yourself in a position where you have no support, aren't helping anybody, and don't have an escape route. Light mechs can be really strong once you figure out what you're doing and have some experience under your belt though.

I'm in tier 4 bordering on 3 and it's pretty common for people in solo queue to give a friendly hello on voice comms pre-match which is next level friendliness compared to World of Tanks or War Thunder, which are the most comparable games I've played. Teamwork is pretty spotty though, people seem receptive but don't know how to effectively react to a lot of information or make good calls. Then you have the (thankfully rare) wannabe generals, and some rando bitching on comms about how his team sucks and should listen to him is legit worse than just having a completely silent team. Being a dick and tilting the team is worth negative teamwork points no matter what a tactical genius somebody thinks they are.

my dad posted:

I'm in tier 5 and people often do communicate quite a bit, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Might just be a factor of me wishing everyone luck and asking people to try to stick to charlie until we've found the enemy at the start of every game, tho.

Honestly a friendly greeting and a simple, clear direction of "let's all go to [grid square]" pretty much makes you an elite pub caller and is enough to give you a strong advantage over a bunch of silent strangers doing their own thing.

https://mwomercs.com/news/2018/06/2076-roadmap-for-june-july-august

A lot of graphical updates for old mechs to give them models for new weapons, but most importantly for the June update...

quote:

New Feature: Build Profile Saving and Sharing
You will be able to save and load 'Mech loadouts and Skill Tree builds with ease with this new feature!
You can export your favorite 'Mech loadout and Skill Tree builds to share with other fellow MechWarriors or even choose to import other MechWarriors' builds for your own use.
Sharing build codes has been made much easier as well with a small update to the Floating Chat system.

July update also has this:

quote:

Build Profile Saving and Sharing Improvements:
Allowing players to try out imported 'Mech loadouts using Testing Grounds.
Showing invoice for extra cost of using imported loadouts.

Since there's a new phase of the Mechfest starting today, any good mechs worth picking up in this phase of the sale? Hunchbacks? Catapults?...Vindicators? (Battletech gave me a soft spot for the Vindicator as one of the starter mechs even if it's not very good)

Yeah getting my first assault mech has been a real eye opener. If I play a medium or heavy I'm only a priority target if I do something dumb and make myself the only target for the enemy team to shoot at. Playing an assault mech, though, enemy teams actively work to take me down specifically.

Tier 3 also feels like a world of difference from tiers 4 and 5, having those tier 1 players in matches is a world of difference compared to just running amok game after game against lower tier players.

I put an XL300 engine and 2xSRM4 and 2xSRM6 on it, and now all the red team mechs have to fear for their butts, because I'm shooting them all day long. Being able to just run around and attack from an unexpected angle is such a huge force multiplier in team fights, I feel like I'm doing a lot more for my team than in say, my Bushwacker or Nova.

Light engines weigh 2/3 of a standard engine and can survive losing one side torso (like Clan XLs).

How the heck do you manage the light engine in the 2lbx10 build? Just downgrade to a LFE 265? 'Cause I'm really struggling to fit it all in. And do the builds go for lbx10 in both torsos for the high mounts, or put them all right-side for the deadside defense?

I actually downgraded my BSW-X2 down to an LFE 255. Gives me room for 2xLBX10, 4 tons of ammo, and 2 medium lasers (or ER mediums if you prefer). No armor on either arm, all weapons in the side and center torsos.

Anybody have good recommendations for MAD-3R builds? I've been playing with 2xLB10X and 4xML since I have all the stuff for it anyway while I grind more credits (and it's a huge plus that it fits with the stock engine), but it's basically the same loadout as my Bushwacker but with better sustain so it'd be nice to have something else to play with.

Also thanks for the Marauder build suggestions guys. 4xPPC is pretty fun, not sure if I want to try variant PPCs on it or not, the 90m minimum range can be pretty nasty sometimes. Triple RAC2s is pretty cool too, though I had to buy a light engine to fit it with a decent amount of ammo. Considering how hot double RAC5s run I was surprised how much better triple RAC2s are, you can fire those for days. Really digging how many different builds the MAD-3R seems like it can do, though, I feel like I really started to find my groove running 4xMPL and 1 UAC/20.

ACs have some merits depending on your playstyle too because UACs spread their 2/5/10/20 damage over multiple bullets in a burst vs one shell with an AC, plus less face time with the AC affords you an opportunity to twist between shots to splash damage around. They also run cooler and obviously never jam.

edit: well poo poo listen to the other guys, i didnt realize only IS ACs were single shot

I've had matches where I've done more damage, but I don't think I've had any where it was as much "quality" damage. The range is painfully limited but the AC/20+4xMPL loadout is so good when you get within 300m.

Mad Cat MKII B is pretty drat good, feels kind of squishy sometimes but with double UAC-10s and double UAC-5s you just straight up pound people's faces in with a steady stream of hard hitting shells and have the range that you're not restricted exclusively to brawling. Clan Omnimech heroes are pretty good value as far as heroes go (assuming the chassis is decent to begin with), due to the nature of omnimechs having one model of a particular chassis is pretty much as good as having all of them, and the heroes tend to have unique omnipods to boot that are now unlocked, so you can run all the vanilla c-bill variant builds, except with a credit boost, plus some unique builds too. Like the Ebon Jaguar hero lets you put ballistics in both side torsos, so I can have dual UAC/10 bunny ears for hardcore hill humping action. There's probably some others but that and the Mad Dog Revenant (2 energy mounts in the CT) are the only hero omnis I own, and coincidentally are two of my favorite mechs too.

Broadly yes, but it depends on the Omni as some have unique CT hardpoints. Examples: the NTG-D has a CT energy that the other Gyrs lack and the IFR-P is the only Ferret with ECM and it's mounted in the CT. Technically, the CT can also have its own quirks that wouldn't transfer, but I don't think any current Omni has anything relevant glued to its CT. Like, some variants of the Gargoyle have a bit more CT armor than others, but that's about it.

When buying an Omnimech, it's helpful to think of your purchase as being a center torso which is the actual mech, and then along with that comes a bundle of eight constituent Omnipods. This is also useful because with heroes you can't buy their pods in the mech bay, so that single set is all you get unless you grab another complete copy of that hero.

Also, jump jets are fixed equipment on omnis too. Sometimes you have cases like the Timber Wolf where only one variant has jump jets.

Running AC/20+MRM40 on it. It feels pretty good after the patch to me, since even the free engine heat sinks got buffed it makes the difference between a build that was a touch too hot pre-patch to being just right. This match in particular played out absolutely perfectly for a brawling Orion but I've been having a string of good and fun matches with this thing. It's a good time to play a laser boat to be sure but the more forgiving heat dissipation opens things up a lot for other possibilities too.
