i think the problem with conference calls isn't the mute button, it's the need for a push-to-talk button instead. everyone should always be muted and can only speak if they hold down the button, would cut out a lot of bullshit

zoom videoconf does this ok, you put it in moderator mode and the only thing people get by default is a "Raise hand" button. mod can unmute em

networking slash router gurus, if i want to be able to identify a box on my network by its hostname from any other box on the network, what do i need to do on a) my router b) the box or c) both/other?

i thought it was setting up a dns server but that seems to be more oriented towards servicing the WAN side of the router rathe rthan the LAN side

couple of angles. if its hard assigned ip you can run a local dns server (that all the boxes on the lan use for lookups) that just hits 8.8.8.8 or w/e if it doesnt have the entry.

the more adult solution is to set up your dhcp server so that it adds hostnames of registered machines to the dns server above, or you can just set static mappings by MAC and add hostname there

everybody should have a simple caching dns server on any sufficient router these days. use it. dont be hittin the fuckin quad eights from inside your lan lol thats a waste
