Anyone that does light-ish watercolors have any tips for digitizing it? My current scanner can't seem to pick up any lighter colors, which is a bummer.lofi posted:

Essentially, all the lows get blown out (like whites on a poorly adjusted camera photo) completely as you can see in the first image there. It's a little hard to tell without the original one, but that entire rectangle is shaded.

Both flatbed scanners I've owned in my life (one from Canon, one from Epson) have had an "advanced" tab in the included scanning software that allows you to fine-tune things like contrast, gamma, brightness, and individual color levels. My current Epson also has a special mode for scanning reflective materials like photos, you may have to poke around a bit to find it but it's probably there somewhere. Also watercolors are notoriously difficult to scan correctly anyway in my experience, so good luck.

I read a tip for reducing the shadows of the paper texture in a watercolour when scanning, maybe it will help for this too? You should scan the watercolour twice: both right-way-up and upside-down, because the light of the scanner catches the grain differently this way. Then you turn the upside-down scan right-way-up, turn it semi-transparent, and layer it on top of the other. You could also try multiplying to original layer to see if the lighter colours are still there, just hidden a bit? And lastly, if you're scanning a thin paper, put another paper or two behind it so you don't get light going through the paper. You might even try scanning with a darker grey paper behind the original to make the lighter colours show better, though you'll have to fudge around the settings more afterwards.

Ty all! I was only aiming to do a quick building study, and it kind of ballooned.EatinCake posted:Anyone that does light-ish watercolors have any tips for digitizing it? I've found putting a colour strip in alongside it helps - just a strip with a full range of colours on, including black. I think what's happening is the scanner seeing only a small range of colours and that loving up its attempts to help.

Daler Rowney 300gsm/140lbs Aquafine Cold Press. They sure like their covers with a lot of text on them. I don't actually have masses of experience with watercolour paper, so I can't say if it's better than average or not - it's just a pad I've had around forever that's come into use at my line & wash class.

I wanted this done and dusted in a week, so in lieu of a background I turned it into a comic panel of sorts. Thoughts on whether the flat colour works compared to grayscale? Doctor_Fruitbat fucked around with this message at 01:11 on Dec 10, 2018 |

I am personally not a big fan or rasterization even if it gives a more believable comic-look. However! This is purely a matter of preference, and you can do grayscale flats just as easy as the colour. Character concept: kitty mage .... again.

Probably not imo (although I’m biased), but it’s not helped by confusing and conflicting lighting. Edit: I mean, go stark black instead of grayscale and, if anything, make the background gray

Did a map in the style of Piri Reis today, and in the process learning: - Gold sharpie not gonna cut it for heavy use - Which of my papers can withstand a watercolor wash - That I should be bolder with said wash - This style would work better for maps on state/country levels - Also, oi vey I need a better scanner, or figure out how to work for the one I have: EatinCake fucked around with this message at 07:05 on Dec 10, 2018 |

This is my dark-skinned, white-haired demon girl in fantasy armour. Her name is Vyxxen and she is a sexy assassin. She uses little daggers because they are easy to conceal and carry when on a sexy mission. She usually seduces her targets first to get close to them, which is easy for her because of her charms. She uses light armour because as an assassin, she needs to be able to move very quickly and to do acrobatics (she's very flexible if you know what I mean!!!).
