I think the movement in twwhd has enough variation that you’re never gonna see a run (with the new strat) be beaten by another run exclusively due to using a fairy. Especially not at world record level imo, I don’t think anyone is masochistic enough to try to save maybe 30 seconds on a 5% chance thing that’s at the very end of the (albeit only) 1 hour+ run, unless they really only care about getting wr and are less than 30s behind a wr that doesn’t use fairy skip.

Once one leaves the speedrunning scene (or just isn’t in it), it’s a lot harder to have the motivation to legitimately be upset about the charity agdq supports (PCF). It’s a big deal when you have no perspective on anything outside of it, which usually happens when you’re young (which is I think what 90% of speedrunners/viewers are).

What can ya do?

Oh I didn’t mean y’all were talking about it as if it was “drama”, apologies for the vagueness. I meant like, the speedrun subreddit or discords or twitch chats or whatever. Something like this being just another piece of speed-drama to discuss with speedfriends. This thread is smart and good

Why does the community around a speedrun matter more than playing the game fast? If it’s called “any%” or “beat the game” or w/e on the leaderboard, with no qualifications, then an unofficial modified version of that game/category is pretty obviously not the same thing?

Just add another category that has the mod, everyone’s gonna be running that category anyway lol how is this a real discussion (i mean elsewhere, obv no one here really cares)

I can’t run “any% mod” what if people don’t take my speed time as seriously

I think category length isn’t necessarily something that changes how you practice, but with like 18 hours difference between the categories it’s obviously a lot more feasible to focus on tighter optimization of whatever gets you past things faster (RPG so I assume menuing, grinding, routing etc), instead of just a general “follow a route as fast and exactly as I can for 18 hours”. Figure out what you aren’t totally comfortable with, and (IMO) just keep doing it til you understand the way it should go, and how you can fix small things you mess up. If it’s possible to practice on an emulator, save-states make it a thousand times less of a pain in the rear end.

Do runs whenever you feel like it tbh, you’re guaranteed to get better times the more you practice. If you like constantly seeing an improved PB, try bustin out at least a few runs a day. The better you get the easier it is to see where you need to practice, and that turns into whatever sort of speed-cycle you’re comfortable with. Practice for a month straight with no runs, do a week of no-reset runs; the speed-world is your oyster pal

 okay yea that's a big difference.

Definitely watch other runs! Even if you aren't copying it exactly, seeing someone else's movement is always helpful I think.
