Table of Contents
Compared to previous season starts, we are not seeing a lot of changes in Smite. The beginning of this season is focusing primarily on a complete overhaul of the Conquest map. Since the game is balanced around Conquest, HiRez is waiting to see how the new map affects gameplay before they do any significant changes to item and god balance. So non-Conquest mains: strap yourselves in because it will be a while before HiRez starts touching the other modes. On the plus side, at least we should start seeing some new cool and interesting gods! 0.1 - Two New Pantheons Have Joined The Game! Besides Conquest changes, two new pantheons are coming to Smite: Slavic Pantheon Voodoo Pantheon (focusing on Haitian Vodou Loa first) Unlike previous seasons, HiRez will not be concentrating on "fleshing out" all the pantheons (ie-filling them out with at least one mage, one warrior, one assassin, one hunter, and one guardian per pantheon). They want to "open it up to give us the ability to make the single coolest characters we can, regardless of where they’ve come from." So don't expect all the gods this season to be strictly from Slavic/Voodoo pantheons, but expect HiRez to get reeeaal weird wit it. 0.2 - Third New Pantheon (Polynesian) comes to Smite! Pele and the Polynesian Pantheon was leaked/confirmed in the Divine Uprising promotional video. 1.0 - Events/Promotions of Season 5 Throughout the season, HiRez will promote events. These usually involve a mix of quests for free rewards and/or paying for new cosmetic items. This section of the post will cover all the events of Season 5 with tips on how you can get "free" stuff. Besides these events, you can always get free stuff by getting daily login bonuses, Triumphant Chests (1 chest for each first-win-of-the-day, up to 4 chests a week or more if you pay with favor), or linking up your Twitch account with your HiRez account and watching Smite streams. 1.1 - Ragnorok The Conquest of Ragnorok Hades If you kept up with last year's Odyssey, there was some lore in there about Hades pulling the strings and blowing up the Conquest map or something. So this season's first event is centered around this idea. Read the Wiki page here for a more detailed rundown of what rewards are available. There's a few free rewards, and three bundles that cost 750 gems each. If you buy all three bundles, you get a limited Hades skin. 1.2 - Smite's Birthday quote:From Tuesday, March 20th to Monday, March 26th players can celebrate our birthday bash with a different event or sale every single day! Be on the lookout for chest sales as well. 1.3 - Season 5 SPL Ticket The SPL ticket returns for Season 5 with the addition of a "Fantasy Point Store." Instead of unlocking rewards in a linear progression, we get to pick and chose what rewards you want to purchase with your fantasy points. Nice! Find out more information on the HiRez page here. 1.4 - Project Olympus Last year we saw HiRez promote "Project Olympus" that corresponded to a bunch of engine and system updates, QOL changes, and ranked improvements. It kind of fell on the backburner at the end of Season 4 - no other new information has been provided. Any additional work on this project is pure speculation; all we know is that there will be "more coming soon..." Read more about it on the HiRez page here. ***UPDATE*** - Added via "Mid Season" Patch. Brief overview of the changes: quote:Commendation System To ring in the three new pantheons, Smite is celebrating with an event called "Divine Uprising." It comes with bundles, chests, some lore, and +100 gem quests. There's 27 items to "collect" from this event, and if get them all, you're rewarded with a limited T5 Bellona skin, "Divine Dragon." It basically works like another Odyssey for this year - the T5 skin will cost around ~6000 gems to get all 27 items. HiRez page with more information here. Replaced by Divine Uprising this year! 1.6 - The Odyssey 2018 Voting brackets for this year confirms a guardian for this year's T5 Odyssey skin: https://twitter.com/SMITEGame/status/1012765282069336064Ares wins the vote: Read more on "The Queen's Odyssey" here. 2.0 - Game Mode Changes As of Season 5 launch, no changes are coming to any modes except for Conquest. However, this section of the post will cover any potential future updates, and any new "Adventure Modes" that HiRez does during Season 5. 2.0.1 - Queue/Matchmaking Changes All queues are being changed via the Mid Season patch, quote:All Normal and Ranked game modes will be changed to a “Timed Queue” system 2.1.0 - Da Ji and the Legend of the Foxes Anime comes to HiRez, so here's your chance to get senpai to notice you! Escort and defend a fox from hordes of creeps. Some randomized mini-bosses spawn here and there, and the mode responds to how well you're doing and will scale the difficulty accordingly. Check the HiRez page for more info. 2.1.1 - Inner Demon Arena Hel comes to Arena and brings environmental hazards, titan juggernauts (same as in arena except they can attack), and a sudden death round at the end of each game. Bundle comes with a bunch of cosmetics and the standard adventure gold key. Read more about it here. There's quests to unlock Ratotaskr skins, and if you purchase the bundle you get some limited cel-shared styled skins and a golden key for more limited skins. The bundle is 900 gems and will cost 1000 once the adventure is over. 2.1.2 - Medusa's Deathmatch Promotional trailer here 3v3v3 mode which has a map that slowly starts closing in à la all the new battle royale games coming out. First team to win three rounds wins the mode. Read more on the 5.10 patch notes here. 2.1.3 - Classic Joust The old Joust map returns to Smite! 2.1.4 - Celestial Domination https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pke9MX3Knxw 2.2 - League Changes No changes at season launch, but the following changes are being made via the Mid Season patch: quote:Ranked Conquest, Joust, and Duel have been soft reset to begin the Fall Split The big changes coming to Conquest are to address some of the criticisms of the old map: basically with how narrow the map is and how exp sharing worked, the jungle didn't really feel like a jungle and any one player was never really in much danger. To sum it up, the Conquest map is being changed to
3.1 - Arena Changes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoQORsSJ9LQ 4.0 - Item Changes We are not seeing a lot of item changes except for some that counter the meta we saw at the end of Season 4. Mage items are getting more diversified, and more "tank buster" items (ones that scale in damage as your target has more health and/or protections) are being introduced for all classes. For a rundown of all the item changes, read the HiRez 5.1 patch notes here. 4.1 - Starter Item Changes The biggest item change coming this season are to starter items (Watcher's Gift, Vampiric Shroud, etc); those are all gone and replaced with Blessings: quote:Each god may only get 1 Blessing per match. Once you have bought a blessing you are locked into it. If you sell it and leave base you will not be able to buy another, even of the same type. The Conquest Blessings are: Assassin's, Guardian's, Hunter's, Mage's, Warrior's; which boost jungle farm, lane assists, basic attack damage, ability damage, and tankiness, respectively. These Blessings correspond to the five roles of Conquest. In the non-Conquest modes, we only get three Blessings. They are: Attacker's, Defender's, and Specialist's; which boost damage, tankiness, and "utility (CDR and movement speed boosts)." Look for these to get tweaked, and possibly more variety to be added in other modes in the future. 4.2 - Masks Are Back! Lono's, Rangda's, and Bumba's Masks are coming back to Smite, but will be completely different. They are now "tier 3" items that have negative stats and are being added/tested in the Mid Season patch. You are limited to only one mask at a time. 5.0 - Resources, Media, Other Links Smite.gg for ranked statistics, or "what do you mean Guan Yu/Arachne are top win?" Just started playing again after 2 or so years away, but I only play Assault so my opinion on stuff is worthless. I do find it funny that some of the issues that were around back when I played last are still present, like crappy servers. Also a bit disappointing that it seems as they've continued the trend of just hiding all the good skins in chests instead of just straight up buying for gems. I was able to buy Skeksis Thoth though so its not all bad.

Honestly, I feel like this season launch feels lackluster compared to previous seasons. Season 3 launch had the new Joust map along with Amaterasu (and teased with Susano and Raijin concept art). Season 4 launch had Morrigan along with Egyptian Clash, although both were available before the actual season start. We also had a lot more "experimental" items (relic changes, rituals, new consumables) at Season 4 launch. This season we're getting a new Conquest and a handful of item changes (which arguably feel more like streamlining some existing items). We're not going to see gods from the new pantheons until summer, and we haven't even been teased with any concept art or anything yet. I feel real bad for any non-Conquest mains because patch 5.1 will feel like patch 4.26.

Mr. Neutron posted:I haven't played Conquest for over 2 seasons now Christ I cant remember the last time I played Conquest legit. I know I played it with some goons around the time Neith was first released but it might have just been a custom game and we goofed around. I want to say I stopped playing conquest and Smite all together in Fall 2012. Then I picked it back up in 2013 when assault was released, and havent really played anything else since other than maybe a handful of arenas and siege since. I just found conquest to be overly toxic and more or less the representation of whats wrong with the MOBA communities. Theres a few assholes in assault as well but I feel like I run into them much less often. Oddly since I've started playing again it always seems to be people playing Cu Chulainn who are the assholes, which is strange. Also just really love the not knowing which god I will get aspect of the mode.

I played two games of conquest this past week because of the Ragnarok quests to do so. Both times I did terribly, no one would offer advice or assistance, we were clearly losing by the ten minute mark, and no one would even try to surrender. It's the last bit that gets me the most. Like, ten minutes in and we're 20 kills behind (not all me!) And there's zero chance to recover, but sure let's spend another 30+ minutes of our lives pretending we have a chance.

Zain posted:Conquest is too serious and toxic. I used to like playing Conquest, but Season 4 turned me off. The beginning of each game became too important and snowbally, so it just became this stressful toxic mode right off the bat: first blood or early loss of lane meant your team was already screaming at everyone. HiRez tried to fix it mid-Season but by then the damage was done. One of their goals is to fix this for Season 5, but I'm conflicted with some of their changes. Some of the stuff seems contradictory: - They want the laning phase more important so they buff minion health. But they decrease minion damage and reduce the penalty for losing minions from tower. I feel like the former makes laning tougher but the latter doesn't. - Towers deal more damage to minions but have less protections. The former makes it a wash on the changes to minion health, but less protections means towers falling easier...which means earlier rotations and more gold for everyone...which means more snowballing? - All jungle creeps and bosses at worth less exp/gold early on and ramp up later - early loss of jungle doesn't matter as much. But there's an enhanced fire giant at 25 minutes, which if any team takes I feel like the game is over. It almost feels like Conquest will be a bunch of aimless putzing around for 25 minutes until a fire giant is secured/stolen, after which phoenixes will roll over and the game will quickly end regardless whether if you were winning or losing. It feels like a team getting the enhanced FG is the equivalent of the other team getting 55s respawn timers in Arena - they're artificial ways to end the game and sort of cheeses the value of winning or losing. It's almost becoming too casual, and I don't know how I feel about the changes. I guess it will depend on whether the community remains toxic or not. I feel like there's going to be a schism between the "casual players" and the "pro (and those who think they're pros in their heads)" scene. I'm totally fine with the new changes and I stay with a "casual" base that doesn't really give a poo poo about meta, top pick/bans, or early pressure. I want to have fun and go with gimmick comps or builds (but not purposely troll or throw the games). If I win or lose, who cares - I just want to play for fun. If I was a professional player, I'd be kind of pissed because I think all games will feel like the last round of eU vs. Rival where it hinged on a stolen FG. I'm speculating it now: I think people are going to ask for changes in ranked Conquest and there might be a split in how farming works in casual vs. ranked Conquest. That or FG buffs will go to the team that did the most damage instead of the last hit. edit- To clarify, these are the stats on the enhanced FG: quote:+100 Magical Power cyclonic fucked around with this message at 14:28 on Jan 22, 2018 |

So probably the weirdest thing I've encountered so far is people in arena playing Medusa... They're just using her ult as a way to kill secure. I don't know why you wouldn't want to use it at the start of the fight or when it's super chaotic. Not sure if this is an "arena only" problem, but it's just one of those things you notice.
|
# ? Jan 26, 2018 20:32 |

I feel like Medusa ult (and Xbalanque ult) only work on newer players, so it's better to just use it for damage
|
# ? Jan 26, 2018 21:00 |

I've saved a Medusa ult for last - not necessarily for a last hit. The range on it is pretty nice and it's a good closer for people trying to get away. Medusa is one of my favorite hunters to play. She's sort of got an aa-canceling combo; it's easy to pull off since even I can do it by accident sometimes. aa -> dash -> aa -> acid spray -> aa -> viper shot (or ult). You can swap the dash/acid spray around, either works, but leading with the dash makes it almost a guaranteed combo. I sort of do it in this clip although it's spread across two targets.

I’ll be honest, half the time I’ve held off on a Medusa ult cause I wanted to make a cool statue.

It definitely feels...less than the old map. I'm guessing it's because they're designing this with consoles in mind. Also, I wonder if HiRez is still messing around with HD texture packs. The last screenshots I saw were a joke negligible difference, but on the new map it might actually be something.

# ? Jan 29, 2018 18:41 |
I haven't logged in yet so maybe it's obvious, but is the idea behind the new FP that you get certain things for total FP collected ever (Athena skin, Thanatos skin) and meanwhile can freely spend that FP on other skins in the store (Afphro, Susano, and so on)? edit nevermind it's explained in the OP. I may have to jump into Conquest while the map is new to see if I can get into that game mode now. For the last couple of months I've mostly just chained Assault matches for fun. bagrada fucked around with this message at 21:47 on Jan 30, 2018 |

HiRez changed the rates on FP going into Season 5. It actually was a lot worse than what you got until people complained that it basically makes it impossible to get all the rewards unless you pay a significant amount into it. Here's the revised rate: HiRezSt3alth posted:We will be increasing the value of FP received per match to mirror the values from last year (5/10 points for a loss/win, or 10/20 if you’ve purchased the Season Ticket split pass). Additionally, if you’re in a match that lasts longer than 20 minutes, you’ll receive bonus FP per minute to account for the time spent in game (up to a 60 minute cap). With this change, players are able to earn more FP than last year. I'm assuming you didn't purchase the split ticket, so you got 10 FP for winning, then a bonus 9 for a long game?

# ? Feb 1, 2018 18:25 |

So is it just me, or is Gauntlet of Thebes insane right now? Once you have full stacks (50 minions assists, not a difficult task) you get 50 magical protections, 50 physical protections, 200 health, +15 HP5, and an aura of 10 physical and magical protections for your allies, so you actually get 60 magical and physical protections. I get that it's a stacking item, but minion assists are literally just being in the general area when a minion dies. I've been building it first pretty much every time I need to play a tanky character. Ridiculous early game advantage.

Odin in A tier is simply not correct at all. He can take the enemy jungle for free whenever he wants and they can't secure it against bird bomb, he full clears at level 3 better than anyone, gaining a huge advantage to do just that, and enters the mid lane two levels higher than them and obliterates the poor sap who dared to play a mage.
|
# ? Feb 8, 2018 13:36 |
|
Agreed; people are trying double jungle and he's a pick that would be really good for it. I'm speculating Odin and Bacchus to be sleeper double-jungle picks in this meta because of the reasons you listed. They also actually transition into late game front liners, as opposed to double assassin picks that people are using. Odin is at a higher tier than Bacchus because he forces Phantom over Beads/Aegis. I think supports are going to struggle early this season because of the nerf to shared exp. Hunters don't need anyone to babysit them in lane because of how safe their kits are, and keeping a support there is actually a detriment. Either HiRez is going to buff Guardian's Blessing to give more bonus exp, or HiRez really needs to shake up ADC kits and/or support items. Odin however can just be a dedicated second jungler and be fine.
