Man, KyoAni did nothing wrong (BTB and Chu2byo notwithstanding). They just want to make cute girls (and occasionally boys), you can't fault a guy/gal/company for that. It'd be like chastising a dog for licking his balls when they itch.

Yes. Ryuko is Moé AF and Satsuki's eyebrows are friggin' cute. :3:

Honestly after the third or so episode I stopped even noticing the near nudity. Even at the points where they're running around stark naked it just felt natural. Satsuki and Ryuko were way too badass to be titillating anyway.

Sure, but what I mean is that whenever they're fighting in their kamui's (I think thats the word) I'm not getting turned on by them, I'm getting pumped that they just did something crazy awesome. The outfits are clearly supposed to be sexy but I never really felt they were at the time because they were just too busy being badass. It never felt like "fanservice".

I think the show does a pretty good job of making you feel comfortable with its characters being nude, generally.

so... guess that's it, huh? just... don't say i didn't warn you.
In some media nudity or near nudity is used in specific ways and with specific connections in mind. KLK uses it in everything and it's muddling to go from nudist jokes to sexual assault. Things that on their own we would be like, "This is obviously comedic" and "This is meant to shock" comparatively. Which honestly is making a cake and eating it too. Like joking about sex, nudity and things like that aren't bad things in and of themselves but good god don't go from that to depicting assault. Especially not as a lazy writer's way of showing bad person bad. It's schlocky as gently caress. To this day I still remember being disgusted by that more than anything to do with the mom as a character, motivations or plans. Was her name Ragyo? I honestly forgot because I remember the Elite Four (Nonon loving owns) far more for how fun they could be as antagonists.

KLK in general is fine but only when it's trying to be fun. When it tries to be serious it's just not fun anymore and we all feel bad.

I watched Triage X first because I liked the look of the GIS more. It's funny. I think the edgy protag would be more fun as a girl, would have made the shower scene incredible. (It's really great how comfortable they are around eachother nude though) Every shot with the idol explosive girl is a treasure, especially the one where she skates behind the cop lady in the parking lot for two seconds. I never watched the one KLK scene but based on the frame by frame text breakdown I read I think the sexualized torture of women in this show is probably worse, and I'm betting it will be a constant throughout the show. Think they could have added a lot of differentiation to the cast by having a broader spectrum of breast sizes. This is the one time in anime the fact they're all high school students came as a complete surprise. It was fun and I'll probably watch more.
Anyway next I'm gonna see if Witchblade is really about a sexy milf.
e: I watched the after credits scene and I'm very excited about the leather chest harness redhead twins
ee: forgot to mention, hosed up but it was funny when the girl was asking him to come home with her and he just looks down at her chest halfway through the sentence. The bit when the cop comes into the room is hilarious too

Update: Witchblade is about a sexy milf
e; Okay that was actually a really cool first episode. I have no basis for this but I was expecting it to be the same kind of dumb show as Triage. The opening bit was really freaky and cool and I wasn't expecting the kind of serious tone or near future disaster zone setting or for the monster the guy transformed into to be a weird robot thing. This presses a lot of buttons for me, hopefully it keeps up this level of quality.
Also I watched a second Triage ep, the blue nurse is insanely good and the samurai and sniper women are a couple.

So here's some questions to throw out w/r/t KLK. Don't feel obligated to answer any or all of these.

Can you create fetishy entertianment that is not pornography?
Related: Is Kill La Kill pornography?
Does making a piece of entertainment fetishy intrinsically devalue it's other qualities?
Is a misstep in plotting or framing of sexual events more damaging than other kinds of artistic mistakes?
Can a character who is consistently fetishized and sexualized still be a good character?
Why do people enjoy Kill La Kill?
Is Kill La Kill Good or Bad, and If So, despite it's weird sex stuff or because of it?

I don’t even know if I’d call KLK ‘fetishized’. Like, that word implies a bizarre or non-‘normal’ sexuality, but KLK is basically attractive young adult women in skimpy clothes, and an attractive older woman in weird clown clothes? There is some weird fetish stuff but by late night anime standards it’s not particularly bad. I like the term ‘thirsty’ instead. Calling it fetishy just seems like projection by people who don’t like any sexual content in their media at all

Endorph posted:

for the record, I occupy the weird middle ground where I don't even like Kill la Kill but also think it gets way too much flack for doing stuff that people are totally willing to go to bat for in other shows.

I think it’s because it both is self aware and embraces the T&A in a way that most shows don’t. People who don’t like T&A can project a sense of shamefulness onto shows that aren’t self aware about that stuff, thinking that them not being so means that of course they know, as I the prude know, that this is gross and wrong. KLK basically consciously spits in that worldview’s face in a way that not many animes do

I think the KyoAni comparison is a very good one, and in both cases the haters almost seem more angry at those studios for being successful at executing an aesthetic they personally dislike than they are at studios and shows that are poorly done. They hate KyoAni because they make good moe shows, and for the moe hater that’s a lot more threatening than some poorly animated generic piece of poo poo

I think part of the backlash against kill la kill's fan service here in after is that the mod wrote the op and specifically forbade discussion of the fanservice.

Also it was hyped for months before as being this thing by the gurren lagaan guys that was going to Save Anime and in the end it turned out to be....ok. Things like symphogear or whatever just didn't receive that level of attention so while objectively they may be just as schlocky it wasn't quite as disappointing as when the thing that'll save anime gave us 4 second butt shot.

That explains the backlash here but even people who aren't part of SA were are weird about it. Though I guess that was kind of the general attitude of a lot of the internet, it was gonna SAVE ANIME and if you thought it was kinda schlocky you just weren't paying attention to its deep themes.

Namtab

I put it to you that kill la kill would probably be more fondly remembered if it were just some two season anime by jc or Deen instead of the first full length anime by trigger.

But heck, this isn't the worst anim ever and has a lot of positives going for it, in particular the animation style- the four second butt shot meme is as much a SA thing as anything else. The main problem with it is just that it spends a lot of time treading water in the middle.

To be honest, I can't really think of any full length trigger show that has lived up to their hype as a studio - their strength seems to be in shorts and movies imo.

Endorph

little witch academia is really good imo, one of the best anime of the last year. and even if you personally aren't that into it, it's definitely more fondly thought of than any other trigger show.

there was mixed buzz early on because people wanted more of an overarching story and the show didn't really start setting that up until episode 5, and a number of people dropped it on episode 4 due to it being the weakest the show ever got and since netflix wasn't putting it up for legal streaming until a few months after it was done fully airing it was more of a bother to keep up with and gave it a smaller audience during its early broadcast

personally i dropped it for a bit following episode 4 and then when it was finishing up airing i picked it back up and fell in love with it. i was convinced it'd be my aoty for 2017

I remember being surprised that the mod was hyping/advertising Kill la Kill so hard, because it looked like the exact kind of show that he would have shut down in that mod's view of what the ADTRW environment should look like.

After the first episode there was so much cognitive dissonance being spewed to justify the show that I was mostly stunned, which later turned into schadenfreude which I guess is why I remember the show as decently good rather than anything less.

the first few episodes are episodic and kinda repeat the OVAs but the later episodes are really good, I'd say the episode where the normie guy comes to the school is where it gets really good and then it just keeps being good from there.
